totally love this performance. This is one of my favs from When the pawn;love the music, lyrics and vocals.u can tell that she's really feelingthe song by her body language and facial expressions;I love the close-up from 1:05-1:32 ( which also shows her tremendous beauty) also love her expression and ad lib at 3:28-3:35.And how cute was that when she wished her dad happy bday at the end. I love lyrics like this that aren't too obvious so u have to actually use ur brain 2 figure out the song.
I've been listening to pop music for over fifty years. In all that time I can count of my fingers the stone-cold geniuses I have heard. This is one of them. Her songwriting is astounding. The melody lines are extremely hip and sophisticated, yet extremely catchy -- no easy feat. Her lyrics are up there with any of the great sixties singer/songwriters. Her smoky vocals have pathos and passion. And, oh yeah, she ain't bad looking either. i always try to steer people in her direction.
She's a true artist, writing her own songs. She's not selling her belly or tongue. She's not singing song written in a Scandinavian factory. Just her and songs of life. Extraordinary...
@SleepLateFilm I refer to the "factory" of Jörgen Elofsson, Per Magnusson, David Kreuger, Max Martin and other Swedish songwriters who have written many hit songs for Britney Spears, Kelly Clarkson and "bands" that spell "boys" with a Z. Apple writes her lyrics from her personal experience and I have tremendous respect for her and other artists who are singer-songwriters.
Her music and persona transcends genres, boxes, and labels. She's a true original, always mysterious and extraordinarily beautiful and talented. She makes you love and believe in the power of music. <3
I've been feeling depressed for the past couple of days. I decided to look up some Fiona videos and I heard the first few notes of her voice and my mood INSTANTLY got better. She came out when I was in high school & I instantly became appreciative of her work. I been listening to her almost half of my life! She has intelligent & insightful lyrics. Gorgeous melodies and music. Fiona is one of the only artists that I have no complaints about. I hope she has a new album coming out soon!
I'm a drummer in a hardcore metal band, but I also play the violin and have training in classical, and I must say that Fiona is hands down one of the best artists of the past 20 years! She is so raw and honest that it's scary how good she is. I listen to her more then any other group or singer. I just love her!
Obviously another in a long line of great songs by FA, what I like about this particular video is how her underappreciated sense of humor is on display when she finishes Lauer's sentence, "And I start singing." Good stuff!

She is singing about the ongoing conflict in the darfur region of sudan. Here is a quote from Fiona herself."Paper bag? oh well, I was really into complex matrices at the time so when I saw the struggle of the Sudaniese people it made me think of a paper bag,you know how their brown and flammable n'stuff."
she is singing it in the context of being in love, just because it references starving for something, it does not necessarily mean starving for food. People will always take things out of context and interpret things differently.
If you listen to the lyrics you would hear it loud and clear.
Fiona has had a tough life and her music reflects that. She is a beautiful and commendable musician, one with soul and the ability to express many emotions.
Wrong, Fiona Apple's music has amazing depths both of soul and musical subtlety. I'd be willing to bet that fans of her music get far more enjoyment out of it than fans of (for example) Oasis or u2 get out of theirs.
Yeah, god forbid MUSIC should be about something more than theory and math. God forbid it should be about passion and feeling. Please folks don't let artistic vision get in the way of good music. STFU.
If you're able to write a better song ... then you can most definitley talk. Listen closer and you'll hear that its a hella difficult song to sing (for a 'one octave' song). From the sounds of it, you'd prefer musicians that prance around on stage in practically nothing and singing three chord poppy songs that they had no hand in writing. If so, I suggest don't go showing your lameness on the internet. You know, where people can see your stupidity.
Phillistines... "Hunger hurts but starving works, when it costs too much to love..." She refuses too love because she knows its all in vain, so she'd rather not..
i always thought it was about anoerixa(sp?) from the "hunger hurts but starving works" but idk. i could be wrong, and if i am someone can correct me nicely.
Yes she is quite awesome and I love her. i hope her music gets even more mellow and jazzy in teh future and more acoustic cause she's one of the best female musical artists of our time. There are only a few. Fiona, Erykah Badu and a few others
look at the paper bag that looked like a bird, hunger hurts, hands are to shaky to hold, to much to love; wtf it was a fantasy lived. do you know what i mean?
