Oh, man. That was the most entertaining five minutes I've ever had. No WONDER Pat Carroll adjusted her pitch lower for Ursula after hearing Howard's demo.
This is why I believe it might be awesome to see Ursula played by a guy. I mean come one, Ursula portrayed as a drag queen, how perfect would that be?
@NijenK99 Actually that's appropriate. Unless I'm mistaken Ursula's design was inspired/based on a drag queen named Divine from the John Waters film called Pink Flamingo's. (If anyone here is driven to check that film out because of my comment I feel I should warn you: It is the very definition of a film for a select audience. Among the things it depicts are characters eating excrement. Those who have weak constitutions or are easily offended should tread carefully.)
Hey if anyone’s interested in hearing another song sung by Howard Ashman they should look up “I Found a Hobby”. It’s a song that was originally written for Little Shop of Horrors but wasn’t used. My guess is that it was an early version of what would ultimately become the song “Dentist!” Fair warning: It’s a little raunchy.
@spielbrick06 "The past can hurt. But the way I see it, you can either run from it, or learn from it..." The Lion King always, ALWAYS use your condom for EVERYthing you do...
This version makes me wish Ursula's role was written for a guy. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Pat Carrol as Ursula (this song alone gave me recurring nightmares as a kid-a sign of a truly awesome villain), but this is just so wonderful. R.I.P., Howard, you brilliant man.
Somehow this song is even more haunting and terrifying with a man singing it...I think it's the flare Ashman put into his characterization. I actually prefer this version to the movie version, but its a close contest lol.
One can only wonder what he would have done with Disney musicals had he lived on.
If this wasn't associated with Little Mermaid, it could almost (with Howard's vocal track) sound like the devil making a deal with a young woman.
The strange thing is, if you listen to Ashman and Menken's temp tracks where they sing, Ashman just goes to town with voices while Menken...just always sounds like Menken.
When the actors perform the songs, the often are given tracks recorded by the composers. so they can follow the notes and lyrics and then sing the song to its exact writing.
Pat Carroll the actress who provides the voice of Ursula said in The Making of Little Mermaid that Howard performed the song for her so she could do it right and she said that he did a fantastic job! She's right Good job Howard! R.I.P.
Ursula should've been a guy. Just to have Howard sing it

@giagia282 Yeah, it's the Latin Spanish dub though technically it's a transgender person, and also the Arabic singing voice is a man as well.

Is it me, or does his voice sound similar to Dr. Facilier from "The Princess and the Frog?"
Now don't get me wrong, I adore Pat Carrol's Ursula, but I love this version (even if it's a demo).

Brilliant cover from the man himself behind the song. Being also a contributer to the theatre he loved giving characters back bone and flare.
