Saw him lots of times in England , my brother ,his mates and myself went many miles on crappy old motorcycles to see him . Had a real talk to him once in Blackpool ,on the pier when he and other big name rock n rollers came in the cafe . But the only one willing to talk ,at length and give autographs was Gene . Much missed !.
Gene; so cruelly treated and misunderstood!!!! the music industry and his contemporaries let him down; so candid so honest and so forgiving; a unique and underestimated talent; miss you Gene!!!!!
Gene sure got the measure of this interviewer, and played him at his own game.Gene comes across as a thoughtful humble man ,who has been there and done it and seen it all,God bless him.

This is a very good interview. Some people do think that a singer can only be "country" or "rock 'n' roll" or whatever. In Ireland, this is very much the stream of thought as well. I love Gene Vincent, Moon Mullican, Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley - artists who sing everything. I try to do this on my own CDs and when I sing live as well as it is more interesting and, yes, rock 'n' roll and country (and blues) are all very similar as Gene says.

Gene is totally right! Jerry played the same songs rock, country ,blues! I hate the touchless interviewer! I still get pissed off at him even if its 40 years ago! Gene Vincent was great and seemed to be very humble!
@Dunitlucky Think that the times were different! Rock´n´Roll were still "Rebellious" and after the fifties, the most US Rock´n´Roll Stars had still more success in the UK than in the US . Think that for Britains -wich have been fightin against Germans in Word War-, a "Black Leather-Dress" were still a sinonym to "Nazis". So his stagedress were actualy pretty provocative to Britains eyes. That was also the same to the Beatles when they started up as a R&R Band early 60´s.
Thanks for posting this. I love the bit when he talks well of John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival (one of the best bands in the history of Rock&Roll, and the very top in 1969-1972). Gene Vincent was a great singer, one of the true pioneers of Rock'n'Roll, and - for those who know something about his life - quite obviously a great man
The most interesting part of the interview, after bating Gene constantly through out, he is suddenly told by Gene that 'he didn't have to work after all'.
I don't think the interviewer did his homework properly, & in the end lacked any foresight,.....so much for trying to be trendy a?.
Many thanks for a chance to hear this, the bottom line is you either like Rock'n'roll or you don't, but if your going to interview on of the greats, give them some respect.
This is a great interview if you listen to other interviews at this time you would not have anyone asking such in debt questions, Gene opens up and gives some real detail about his problems, views and his life, he was at this time in his career really struggling and had been for most of the 60's with unsuccessful record sales. Great interview.
oh dear...this interviewer is so immature and unprofessional..please accept an opology from a british guy. Gene was a true gentleman and what patience he had to overcome such an insult to his intelligence
As a Brit Gwilymrj is right the interviewer is a complete dick. Jerry Lee Lewis still sings Whole lotta Shakin. He would not be aloud off the stage if he didn`t. At the time of the interview Jerry had changed direction to suit himself. and very successful he was too.
Gene is an all time great rock'n'roller and is recognised everywhere has a first rate artist. On the other hand this rude second rate interviewer wouldn't make it as a third rate human being. For the record Gene is much loved and admired in Britain. Just to add that, to its eternal credit, the BBC has generally rid itself of such condescending hooray henry's. However I'm afraid that the "cigar smoking fat slobs" mentioned by Gene, are still with us - on both sides of the Atlantic!
As a Brit I would like to apologize for the cretin of an interviewer who should have been taken out and given a good kicking. What a gentleman Gene was in this aberration of an interview .
These questions that this jackass is asking are the most stupid questions you could possibly ask him. This British interviewer is such an asshole! WHAT AN ASSHOLE!!
Salut Lee-Loo, je suis Franco-Ontarien...ma chanson favorite de Gene est "Little Lover" :) And yeah, to agree with the rest of you, this interviewer was a big wanker! :D haha
i drink, smoke and go out with woman, now stick that in your pipe and smake it all you Civil Liberterians.. how refreshing to hear a man say that, in this fake, plastic, controlled, faggot world 99.9% people live in.
you were a gem back then and still today..R.I.P Peace gene baby!!!!you are the original HELL RIDE !!!
interviewer: "Gene, i like country music. why dont you play coutry music? i would like you if you played country music gene. jerry lee lewis plays country music. why havn't you done this gene? why gene? why?"
This creepy interviewer had been given the brief to be controversial and didn't have the guts to refuse.
I still squirm with embarrassment whenever I cannot avoid hearing this piece. Luckily Gene as the intelligent and thoughtful gentle man he was, understood that the English fans appreciated him for who he was and was happy to spend so much valued time amongst us. I still love to listen to the most genuine rocker ever. You're sadly missed Gene.
Basically, this stuck up prick interviewer is chastising one of the original Rockabilly Greats because Gene Vincent refused to change who he is for personal profit?!?!
"Used your affliction in your stage act" ?? As if he could have waved a wand and made it disappear? I don't think the interviewer was deliberately trying to be a prick, but he sure comes off as as one. GV does sound a little removed (no surprise given that he was a few day away from death) but he handles the interviewer's gaffes pretty calmly. This is one of the more intriguing interviews I've seen; thanks for posting it.
Dave Simmons considered himself to be a lot more aggressive interviewer in those days, and he was kind of inexperienced. FWIW, it's thanks to David' show on BFBS that I got to know Gene Vincent, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis etc and remain a fan to this day. (of both Gene Vincent as well as the show)
terrible interview, but gene did not let him get the best of him. Gene could sing country, he grew up in the south, but he could sing anything. Why settle for only part of what you can do?
Totally agree this interviewer is partonising and self opinionated clearly he has no interpersonnal skills whatsoever Gene deserves tons of respect not this dickhead questioning him like a policeman R.IP. Gene a fuckin fine man through and through memories to cherish.
Man this interviewer is BAD - no wonder muso's/actors treat them with disdain ..even today. Who the hell is he? Gene does great to put up with this sh*t! You can hear Gene sounding "down" in his tone. RIP
This fukwit interviewing gene,, is the cigar smoking fat slob gene refers to in this interview, Gene was and will always be the original Rocker and had the guts to stick it them from day 1,as he siad elvis was the boy next door only.you are missed Gene !!!RIP!!!
I love Gene Vincent with all my heart, his music has helped me through some hard times. That voice is magic. And he is very articulate and polite in this interview, he has a tendency to lie at times, but thats Gene.
I don't care for the tone of this interviewer, his attitude annoyed me and I am surprised gene kept polite and cool (I felt like slapping him), it seemed like he just wanted to slag every thing off about him.
I hate comparing artists because I like so many different styles and voice tones, and Gene has a unique unmistakable sounding voice. I am so glad we can still hear his records and see videos of him.
So moving! I couldn't say what touches heart the most between the perfectly chosen first picture and the kinda broken - but still unique sweet voice. Thanks for sharing!
Listen SilverFoxNo1: It's actually very difficult in a modern world to voluntarily stop a person from slowly killing him/her self by drinking. If you don't realize that you are a bit immature. I belive Gene in private when drinking wasn't excactly the easiest person to dealt with. So stop this nonsense blaming everybody else. I work professionaly with addicts and have also dealt with persons very near me wich are alcoholics. It's impossibly to rehabilitate them if they don't want to.
sweet gene vincent young and old and gone sweet gene vincent who, who, who slapped john? white face, black shirt white socks, black shoes black hair, white strat bled white, died black sweet gene vincent let the blue roll tonight at the sock hop ball in the union hall where the bop is there delight
here come duck-tailed Danny dragging Uncanny Annie she's tehone with the flying feet you can break the peace daddy sickle grease the beat is reet complete and you jump back honey in the dungerees tight sweater and a ponny tail will you guess her age when she comes back stage? the hoodlems bite thier nails black gloves, white frost black crepe, white lead white sheet, black knight jet black, dead white
sweet gene vincent there's one in every town and the devil drives 'till the hurse arrives and you lay that pistol down sweet gene vincent there's nowhere left to hide with lazy skin and ash-tray eyes a perforated pride so farewell mademoiselle, knicker-bocker hotel farewell to money owed but when your leg still hurts and you need more shirts you got to get back on the road
You dont seem to know anything about Gene thats why you shouldn´t comment this video and get people upset. Just enjoy his songs, get to know more about him..!
One last Thing! where were all the People who make Money with him after his Death with Reunions, the came out of his Holes when Gene died, but nobody was there when he needs them! they can talk a lot in Interviews and Books what goes wrong in his last Years, they know everything but No One was there !
Because All his Weakness that made him so lovely, with his beautiful Voice like an Angel !Nothing else to say!
The People dont know how hard it in in a Music Business, you can not exist without good Friends and a good Managment behind you.Elvis also could not handle it and did too early.
Not to forget Gene was the only Rock N Roller with a big Hundicap and he was completely alone( No Eddie )! Gene did everything he could to make his Fans happy!
Elvis sung everything when Colonel Parker told him! we know Elvis also was not happy with this Situation but he shut his Mounth and do what they told him.Gene never would do this.
The Interviewer who talk to Gene 1971 is bad as most all of the other Music Interviewers ,Not One good Question, there was so many interested things you can asked Gene, he loved to talk about Music, but they asked all this damn stupid Things only to annoy him.
Gene was not the Typ of Guy for Stardom. He dont look sexy as Elvis or Ricky Nelson( the best record seller after Elvis with not a good voice as Gene) ,but he was a Teen Guy, this is what they what in the 50 th till now its still the same!
Gene was sad Caracter but he was very strong when it came up with his Music, then he know what he want and nobody can tell him what to do.
Gene also sing You'll never walk alone and you can not say what is better, I only can say that Gene's Version Make me cry!
Record Selling and Stardom not always has a lot to do with more Talent, its has a lot to do with Luck and the People you have behind you ( Managers and Money Makers)
Its very Simple to say what is the Attraction Of Gene! He has a Heartful ,Tender and sensitive Voice ,like his Personality was !
you can not mess him up with Elvis, 2 diffrent voices, they lived in 2 diffrent Worlds.A few Days ago I got an Elvis CD with alternate Gospel Versions on this you can listen to Youll never walk alone , Elvis sing it unbelievable great like everything, but nearly too perfect!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What am I missing?? Other than Be-Bop-A-Lula Gene Vincent was a wanna be. He was a squirrely guy without a particularly good voice who appealed to the English sect because he was a minature Elvis. He wasn't a great rocker, a great writer, a great performer..he wasn't really great when he was alive, and hasn't gained in stature since he died...what is the attraction to this guy???
Actually Gene in his prime had an excellent voice; very on key & a nice tone to boot. He recorded a slew of great songs (Race With The Devil; Who Slapped John; Blue Jean Bop for starters) besides Be Bop A Lu La. His back up band the Blue Caps were amazing; check out the lead guitarist in particular. Finally the reason the English liked him was because he was actually very talened, cool, & he would actally travel to England. Note that they liked Eddie Cochran & Buddy Holly when the USA didn't.
Gene was wrong about no younger people coming to see him. I used to go and see him from when I was 15 years old in the late 60's andright thru the 70's
I think its kinda sad that Gene died so early as he is regarded as one of the most important musicians of the 1950s now.His singing was always heartfelt and his honesty always came across. He was a working musician on the pub and club scene which wasn,t easy after his early stardom, much respect Gene.
In poor defense of the interviewer, I think you have to keep the era of the time in mind. Rock music had been COMPLETELY revolutionized by 1971, and I suppose this guy was saying keep up with the times or do something safe; don't just do your same old schtick.
Some more stupid questions from a guy insisting that he should be playing country music, or telling him what he should do. Pathetic. All those people who didn't understand Gene's music came from the heart...

You are a person who did not know the world of rock n roll.
Gene is far from being a copy of elvis simply be that he did not have the same register.
Gene was exélence by the rocker, a big generous.
It is not because you do not know anything, the need to spit.
One should not be confined gene has to bop lula, he made a lot of other great works, which remains the pantheon of rock and roll.
Gene has continued marvel and continue for a long time.

Part 4
Elvis sung everything when Colonel Parker told him! we know Elvis also was not happy with this Situation but he shut his Mounth and do what they told him.Gene never would do this.
The Interviewer who talk to Gene 1971 is bad as most all of the other Music Interviewers ,Not One good Question, there was so many interested things you can asked Gene, he loved to talk about Music, but they asked all this damn stupid Things only to annoy him.

part 3
Gene was not the Typ of Guy for Stardom. He dont look sexy as Elvis or Ricky Nelson( the best record seller after Elvis with not a good voice as Gene) ,but he was a Teen Guy, this is what they what in the 50 th till now its still the same!
Gene was sad Caracter but he was very strong when it came up with his Music, then he know what he want and nobody can tell him what to do.

Part 2
Gene also sing You'll never walk alone and you can not say what is better, I only can say that Gene's Version Make me cry!
Record Selling and Stardom not always has a lot to do with more Talent, its has a lot to do with Luck and the People you have behind you ( Managers and Money Makers)

Part 1
Its very Simple to say what is the Attraction Of Gene! He has a Heartful ,Tender and sensitive Voice ,like his Personality was !
you can not mess him up with Elvis, 2 diffrent voices, they lived in 2 diffrent Worlds.A few Days ago I got an Elvis CD with alternate Gospel Versions on this you can listen to Youll never walk alone , Elvis sing it unbelievable great like everything, but nearly too perfect!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
What am I missing?? Other than Be-Bop-A-Lula Gene Vincent was a wanna be. He was a squirrely guy without a particularly good voice who appealed to the English sect because he was a minature Elvis. He wasn't a great rocker, a great writer, a great performer..he wasn't really great when he was alive, and hasn't gained in stature since he died...what is the attraction to this guy???
Quixote010 4 years ago
Actually Gene in his prime had an excellent voice; very on key & a nice tone to boot. He recorded a slew of great songs (Race With The Devil; Who Slapped John; Blue Jean Bop for starters) besides Be Bop A Lu La. His back up band the Blue Caps were amazing; check out the lead guitarist in particular. Finally the reason the English liked him was because he was actually very talened, cool, & he would actally travel to England. Note that they liked Eddie Cochran & Buddy Holly when the USA didn't.

the guy asking questions is retarded, thats my opinion and i freakin hate that guy

at this time gene was very depressed and in bad health. 1971 was really hard time for gene before he passed away his reason was completely gone.
eugenecraddock 4 years ago
That is your opinion! Maybe that some around him helped to be bad, eh? And since a lot of time ! ?!?
anneesvinyl 4 years ago
Gene was wrong about no younger people coming to see him. I used to go and see him from when I was 15 years old in the late 60's andright thru the 70's
Mayqueen1805 4 years ago
I think its kinda sad that Gene died so early as he is regarded as one of the most important musicians of the 1950s now.His singing was always heartfelt and his honesty always came across. He was a working musician on the pub and club scene which wasn,t easy after his early stardom, much respect Gene.
MrMudclub 4 years ago
In poor defense of the interviewer, I think you have to keep the era of the time in mind. Rock music had been COMPLETELY revolutionized by 1971, and I suppose this guy was saying keep up with the times or do something safe; don't just do your same old schtick.
TONYM60A3 4 years ago
Some more stupid questions from a guy insisting that he should be playing country music, or telling him what he should do. Pathetic. All those people who didn't understand Gene's music came from the heart...
