Their religion is irrelevant when we're talking culture. They were the same people before Islam ever arrived. Mindanao is one of the few places in the Philippines that the Spanish weren't able to fully convince people that their culture and tradition was garbage. If other Filipino want to know what their people were like before the Spanish occupation, they can look to the so-called Moros, the Ati, Ita, and Igorot peoples. Very nicely done! This goes to my playlist.

The word "Moro" is actually the Spanish definition for "Moroccan". Morocco is an Arab country that occupied Spain for many centuries until the Spaniards drove them out. When the Spaniards arrived in the Philippines, they noticed rebellious Muslim tribes in Mindanao and figured out they have the same problem like in their home country.

Although Moroccans and Moros share Islam but only few cultural similarities, they were given the same name.
