@pitster110 I understand what you are saying about race and sexuality being different. Of course they are different. But when comparisons are made between the two, people are normally referring to the similar struggles for equality that both groups have gone through.
I think some people here are a little sensitive and maybe see your comment of fact as a little more than what it actually is!
@dcjam12 I don't see how pointing to parts of the bible where women aren't subjugated somehow negates the instances where they are? Or slavery for that matter.
If anything, it just reinforces the diametrically opposed discrepancies and inconsistencies. Or to put it another way, a thief is guilty of theft, he can't be found innocent just because there were times he didn't steal!
So you are saying Jeremiah cancels out all preceding edicts? The laws of Lev., Ex, etc etc no longer apply to us?
@dcjam12 Again, it's clear that the bible, and therefore God, has no issue with a father selling his daughter as if she were cattle. This, I think, is morally reprehensible. So now we also add misogyny and sexism into the mix!
Again, we notice no condemning of this practice either. It seems ok for women to be treated as property?
@chubsta2001 Misogyny and sexism? Deborah,Esther, and Ruth were very powerful women in the bible. And the bible is very candid about how they helped Israel.
Secondly, the old testament laws were written for Israel only. We are no longer under the law of Moses, but under a new law. Jeremiah 31:31-34
@dcjam12 Firstly, the references you give are just examples of the bible stating how slaves should be treated. This is not condemning slavery, it is just describing the way that Israelite slaves should be treated.
I would consider people enslaved for life (and deemed the property of the victors) through conquest as 'slaves.' I fully understand that the bible doesn't forbid this and this is my problem with it.
@saxophone323 Ok then, so is slavery immoral in the eyes of God? Lev. says no and Ex. says yes, sort of. Depending on where you are from.
The bible is held up as a source of morality. We are told to go to the bible for God's word and guidance. If I go to it with my question above what answer does it give me?
"If I go to it with my question above what answer does it give me?"
You have to decide the answer for yourself unfortunately. But the bible's not perfect. If it was, Christians would've solved all of the world's problems years ago.
@saxophone323 Well thanks for the condescension but I've read and studied the bible more than once! I've also heard differing opinions on its veracity by Christians and Jews.
I understand it is the work of a number of different men, but I'm having trouble understanding why a God would divinely inspire such gross inaccuracies? Sure, you'd expect some deviation but night-and-day difference?
@chubsta2001 It's not God's inspiration, it's a human failing or need. No one really knows who/ what God is or if he even exists. People just make him what they need him to be because they're scared that they are alone. Different books and meanings of the Bible are just the sign of their times by those humans' perspective. It's like not having the parents you needed so you look for a substitute instead of relying on yourself. IMO.
@chubsta2001 As I mentioned before, voluntary servitude or servitude as result of punishment or conquest was not forbidden. There were laws to protect slaves. There is no contradiction. Here is only half of the passages that protected slaves. Ex 21:20,Ex 21:26-27,Dt 23:15-16,Ex 20:10,Dt 5:14,Lev 25: 39-43. It gets better. Slaves can be freed after 6 years and were given a surplus package.Dt 15:12-15.
@hanohanonacowboy I'm not sure what your point is? I'm not stating the bible was written with me in mind. I'm questioning the fact that many Christians hold the bible as the immutable word of god and yet I can't understand why, on the subject of slavery in this example, there are major discrepancies, sometimes just pages or lines apart.
There are many discrepancies in the bible, because even if it is the word of god, it was still written down by men, divinely inspired men, but regardless. It's not perfect, and you do have to subject it to some degree of interpretation, especially keeping in mind major discrepancies between the OT and gospels. You're not going to understand everything in it perfectly on your first read. It requires a little more study than other books, like I don't know, say Harry Potter.
@saxophone323 You believe it was written down by divinely inspired men. You have no proof of that. Considering how many times it says its ok to kill in the bible, that slavery is ok, & a whole host of other evil things. The bible is the holy book of your religion. Not mine. So dont try to pretend it should be the moral guide for everyone. I've read & studied the bible. The stuff that Jesus says is generally good (he doesnt call homosexuality a sin) the rest is nonsense at best.
It's not the moral guide for everyone. It's just that generally people are idiots and think that the bible is the only thing in the world that matters and fail to think for themselves or of common sense. It's a moral guide, but it isn't the only one, and it's not a perfect one. But it's the easiest thing to argue in terms of to people that are Christians.
"For false Christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect." (Matthew 24:24, NKJV) Yep, he's the anti-Christ!
@quick2l Have blacks been thrown out or killed by their own family members? Have blacks been put in concentration camps and killed by the thousands along with the Jews? Have blacks had to come out to their parents, work , friends, society? No comparison there. How about looking for the comparisons, laws against you because you are gay/black. Killed for being gay/black. Ostracized for being gay/black. Had the Bible used against you for being gay/black. Learn b4 you comment.
um um um, what ever happened to america being against muslims, You'd rather have more mosques than someone being gay....no wonder why it's all messed up for you guys. Keep it true.
@dcjam12 As stated, it appears there is a bias towards Israelites in these matters. There are many guidelines and restrictions about israelites becoming slaves but these rules don't appear to apply to Gentiles.
I believe this is the source of the conflicted message.
@chubsta2001: "There are many guidelines and restrictions about israelites becoming slaves but these rules don't appear to apply to Gentiles."
-- Absolutely correct. Just as the rules in Leviticus mostly applied to priests ("Levites"--the priestly class the book was named after), while some applied to average Isrealites wishing to perform functions in the Temple and a very few applied to Gentiles living within the Land oof Israel. None of those rules applied to people outside that land.
@chubsta2001 We have to make a distinction between slavery and punishment. Generally, the punishment was either banishment or servitude. Biblically, servitude as a result of punishment or conquest is not condemned or forbidden.
However, this form of servitude cannot be considered slavery, at least in its traditional sense. The act of buying, selling or enslaving an individual exclusively for the purpose of servitude is forbidden within the Bible
@Dcjam12 Following on from the mixed messages, Lev 25:44-46 seems to directly contradict the edict set out in Ex 21:16. This states that it's fine to buy people: "...slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves."
It goes on to state that these slaves can be slaves 'for life.'
So who do we go with? Leviticus or Exodus 21:16? Why is God so confused on the matter?
@dcjam12 I understand there are passages in the OT that appear to stand against slavery. But, for example, in the same Exodus 21:7 it speaks of a father selling his daughter as a slave.
And all this still doesn't address the fact that the bible condoned the taking of people during war and using them as slaves. Deut 20:10-15 is particularly odious as it encourages the taking of women and children as spoils.
So, being generous, the bible sends out mixed messages on slavery. Why is this?
@chubsta2001: "So, being generous, the bible sends out mixed messages on slavery. Why is this?"
-- Because it isn't sending messages at all. It is a collection of books written centuries apart by different people speaking different languages and speaking to various audiences, none of which included you.
The writer of Deuteronomy you quoted was not speaking to you when he wrote about "spoils" any more than Glinda the Good Witch was speaking to you when she said to follow the yellow-brick road.
@chubsta2001 Fathers could sell their daughters as a maidservant and wife. Since they were then married to their master, they were not automatically set free after six years. However, they were still protected by the law:
1.If the husband divorced his wife, the law labelled it "unfair treatment" and allowed for her to be freed (Ex 21:8)
2. If someone bought a wife for his son, he was to treat her as his daughter (Ex 21:9)
3.Neglected wives were automatically freed (Ex 21:10-11)
Wait a second. So you think I'm bisexual cause I say a person makes that choice? Wow assholes! I mean that a person aint born gay. They make that vhoice to be gay! I am 100%aagainst homo or bisexuality! The Bible says its a sin! Oh and pheonix1985 It is a sin read the bible, a sorry, but how does thinking that homosexuality is wrong going to bring me bad Karma? Last of Santorum will win for he has faith in God and the Lord Jesus Christ
Listen Homosexuality is a CHOICE! It's an abomination, and is a horrible act. Im sorry if Im being disrespectful. But you can't choose the color of your skin, but you can chose your sexusal orientation. God Bless America, and Rick Santorum!
@langwmu93 Would you ever kiss a boy? No? Well that's probably because you're not gay right? Well why don't you just do it? Just choose to be gay for a day. If it's a choice it shouldn't be that hard.
dude, you clearly don't know me. Those aren't my views. I don't have a problem with gay sex, I was just clarifying a passage in the bible did you dick.
@saxophone323 Exodus is the oldest and largest ex-gay ministry, so to have their president admit they can't change anybody is huge. Happened last month.
SEX is a choice, regardless of whether it's man / man, man / woman, or woman / woman. According to the bible, sex is a sin if it doesn't have the goal in mind of producing children (a.k.a man /woman, no birth control, no morning after pill, etc.). Attractions are not a choice. I can't chose who I'm attracted to. But you can chose to act on those feelings. I don't necessarily agree w/ the bible on that, but that's what it says.
@saxophone323 Its what the bible says. Not what the generally accepted opinion of the scientific community is. So, since its all about procreation & not love, shouldnt we have children getting married as soon as the hit puberty to produce children? And, since love isnt a factor, shouldnt we go back to arranged marriage to produce the best stock? After all, if its just about having children, what should love matter? Love does matter. Its not all about sex, something you Christians just dont get.
I know you're having fun arguing about how much Christianity sucks, and guessing all my opinions based on stereotypical behavior. It's not all about sex, and love does matter. It's stupid to just guess a person's opinions based on a very small detail. You didn't read my comments, you just saw "bible" and thought "hey, here's a homophobic bigoted christian that doesn't understand love, let me argue with him" and you were wrong about just about all my opinions. Read my comments.
@langwmu93 I read it every day since I was 14, have a degree in Bible studies and a master's as well. And I one of the millions of Christians who welcome gays as church members, musicians and ministers.
@langwmu93 It's a choice to you because you aren't a heterosexual. You are a bisexual who hates his same sex attractions and can choose to be with the opposite sex. Straights never say it's a choice.
@langwmu93 It's only people like you, closet bisexuals, that say this. Don't try to be an authority on things you know nothing about. All you know is bisexuality. Come out already. It's easy for you
@TheNolo73 Oh, and for you, don't fuckin try to fit me in your filthy homo/bisexual bracket! I hope America never caves in for you guys, cause it's a disgusting act, and is a disgrace to humanity. Men and Women, not man and man or women and women. Dickhole
@langwmu93 I didn't put you in a bisexual bracket, you did. I know who I am and I have straight friends who know who they are. No one says it's a choice anymore unless they are bisexuals. You are just one who hates his gay side. It doesn't matter what hate and disgust you put in your comments, you made your personal opinion here yourself and admitted to being a bisexual. When you said it's a choice,it is a choice, for you. Bisexual. It isn't an insult to Bi's or to me or to people who don't care
@langwmu93 I see you live under a rock by the way. America is in the middle of making Gay marriage legal. 7 states and counting. Ellen just made JC Penny a boatload of money because of her one million moms fan club. I just found a couple of Churches who have Gay flags hanging in front close by me. The Gay prides in every state are more fabulous as the years go by. America didn't cave in, it's opening it's arms to Gays and Lesbians. Better move to Iran, for now.
@langwmu93 Homosexuality isnt a choice. It is not a horrible sin. You cant choose your sexual orientation. I cant wait till Karma fucks you over. It'll be sweet. & Santorum will never win EVER!
@langwmu93 Could you choose to change your sexual orientation? Could you will yourself to be attracted to the same sex? Of course not. "Homosexuality" is a modern medical term. It merely means lifelong attraction to persons of one's own gender. Nobody chooses it. Ask any medical association or ask a gay person. Or ask Exodus ex-gay; they just admitted 99.9% don't change in their "ministry."
@langwmu93 When did you choose to be straight? Oh, that's right, you never did. You were just always that way. Just like gay people are always that way. And there are great gay Christians.
@langwmu93: "Homosexuality is a CHOICE! It's an abomination, and is a horrible act. Im sorry if Im being disrespectful. But you can't choose the color of your skin, but you can chose your sexusal orientation."
-- So is it an "act" or an "orientation"? You can't seem to decide yourself, since you use both terms in the same sentence. Makes me wonder if you just plain don't have a clue what you are talking about.
She endorses Santorum? Rick should say, "No thanks." Look what happened to Romney THE DAY AFTER that goofball Trump endorsed him; His numbers went into the toilet.
"Gay is the new black" is a good metaphor for where we are in civil rights. Of course there are obvious differences, but both are innate, not chosen and not changeable at will, per the AMA.
@writerJerome no because blacks are born black. you are not born gay. plus blacks were slaved and were beat to death. gays have never endured what the black man has.
@TheShootTruth10: Gays have been persecuted, abused, beaten, tortured, imprisoned and executed. The word "faggot" is the old British word for kindling wood; it became associated with homosexuals because so many were burned to death at the stake by "Christians". They have many thousands of years of abuse while the "blacks" endured centuries of it. Both were abused by "Christians" but liberal Christians brought love and freedom to both groups.
Sexual orientation is not a disease or an addiction, it is just a different way of loving. It is a gift God gives to a small percentage of all creatures, including humans. And it comes with a strict no-return policy. The ex-gay groups now admit they can't turn gays into straights. Google Exodus admits gays don't change.
Wuuhhhh. I'm Ann Coulter. I did a fuckload of drugs at Greatful Dead Concerts, then realized I could make money by pretending to be a far right religious conservative. When I discovered I had a knack for saying things that anger people, that I was a natural at being a troll, my career path was set.
Whether or not being gay can be compared to being black is irrelevent. Hate and prejudice come form the same place. Hate is discrimination. Discrimination is power plus prejudice and it is a cycle.
Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu disagrees with Coulter. He compares the anti-gay prejudice to apartheid, both based on innate traits a person did not choose. He concluded "Homophobia = Racism"
Being black and being gay are not the same thing at all. There is a HUGE! difference between a sexual orientation and a Racial ethnicity/skin color. That is a fact not an opinion but a FACT.
@pitster110 If you don't even have the ounce of brain matter required for critical thinking about this subject, please don't come pasting your ignorance in the comments section
@619stanley How is that ignorance you idiot? you are trying to compare a racial ethnicityy to a sexual orientation and i don't have criitical thinking? yeah right why don't you keep you're dumb comments to yourself until you have something smart to say. and while you are at it get a life.
@pitster110: Anti-gay fanatics reveal their hate and ignorance in comments like yours. I saw an article about you online called "Angry Single Male Seeks Same" about how homophobes have a love/hate obsession with gay men.
@writerJerome You are a idiot,a true text book definition of an idiot. So because i stated a fact that there is a difference between sexual orientation and a racial ethnicity im anti-gay?
@writerJerome wtf who said i was christian? you are seriously fucked you know that? you keep throwing random crap in that i never even said. i con't tell if you are trolling or just plain stupid.
@pitster110: You reveal yourself as the troll because you offer no evidence or links, as I do. You simply spew ignorant insults. Every science-based medical association concludes based on overwhelming evidence that sexual orientation is not chosen nor changeable at will. Google gay brains fetus scans to see the biological development in utero. Some people are literally born gay.
@writerJerome ok how many times do i have to say it. i know people are born gay i never said they were not born gay. i said there was a different between a racial ethnicity and a sexual orientation and if you cannot tell the difference then you need to be educated. you are by far the most ignorant person i have ever talked to hands down. you are argueing with me about shit that i NEVER even said.what in the hell is wrong with you ?
@pitster110: You contradict yourself and use profane and juvenile insults to "win". Why? Because that is what trolls like you do. Please get a life. You have added nothing to the discussion of any substance. At this point, nobody knows what you are trying to say, including you.
@writerJerome Well said. I am a straight pastor whose denomination tackled this issue 40 years ago. We welcome GLBT in the United Church of Christ, as many other denominations now do.
@pitster110 Actually, you're a dumbass and should educate yourself better. There is not a shred of evidence to suggest that every homosexual in the world is doing it by choice. Every piece of evidence indicates that it's genetic. That is not an opinion but a FACT.
@JesusSucksCamelAss You dumbass i never said homosexuality was a choice you fucking idiot. Read the damn comments retard and think before you say stupid ass shit. or do you not know how to read ?
this hurts because it makes me think woman are stupid, to see Ann Coulter talk just..... I mean... how the fuck to these fox tools live with themselves
@vikingvoicesstud So you're saying Paul was saying to obey the slavery laws because it was legal? Really? I don't understand this. So if rape was legal, he would say that it was ok to do? This doesn't make sense. If Paul had divine, omniscient backing he would surely see how immoral it was for people to be treated like property? Is God really that swayed by the laws of man? Surely his stance would be 'I don't care if it's legal, it is immoral and I won't stand for it.'?
@vikingvoicesstud It is true there's a higher risk if you're gay AND behave irresponsibly in your sex life. But this isn't to say that being gay is detrimental per se, it's about behaviour which is why heteros contract it. 20% of gay people are living with HIV/AIDS but 80% don't have it.
Other STIs are more prominent amongst straights but no one would claim that heterosexuality is 'detrimental'
And for the record, gay women have the lowest STI rates out of everyone, including straights.
Whoa, hey now. I just gave the definition of a 'civil rights movement'. I didn't say anything at all about suffering or the like. They are comparable because they're both civil rights movements, in the way that apples and oranges are both fruits. I think your comment is unfortunate, because what you are implying is that 'by far and large' the african american community doesn't understand what a civil rights movement is, by definition.
Discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation only holds true if there's a genetic predisposition? Says who?
Look, I don't care if you think being gay is a choice or it's inborn. It shouldn't matter either way. You can't discriminate against me as a Jew, regardless of whether I'm one by birth or conversion. Your entire argument is spurious.
Argue for you prejudices and sure enough they're yours.
@YouHaveWonAFreeiPad Oh, and another note. Back before Loving v. Virginia, when interracial marriage was not legal, one could've used that same argument. The right to marry someone of a different race was not allowed for anyone, so you're not denying rights to a specific group, but everyone. Whites couldn't marry blacks just like blacks couldn't marry whites. Straight men can't marry men just like gay men can't marry men. Same line of thinking.
@YouHaveWonAFreeiPad If you want to go down THAT route, it can still be considered a civil rights issue. Why let a man marry a woman, but not let a woman marry a woman? Or vice versa. This way it isn't a sexual orientation issue, but a sex one.
I'm interested to hear how same-sex marriage "perverts sexuality". Homosexuality is a part of sexuality already, by the way.
@vikingvoicesstud Actually yes, I am so much better. And you wanna know why? Because I'm capable of sensitivity and compassion for a group of people that are constantly stigmatized by society. Why would anyone CHOOSE an identity in which they are instantly judged by bigots like Ann Coulter? And it appears from your posts that your just as bad. Backing this nasty venomous bitch as if her opinion is of any value. And I found the word "cunt" to be well played in my below post. This word exists for
@maxroachtribute No, I mean "retarded", as in... the Kardashian family. The entire cast of Jersey Shore. The entire cast of any Big Brother show regardless of which country it was produced in. Paris Hilton. Kanye West.
Well, we're sick of hearing from you, Ann Coulter.
Both gayness and blackness are genetic and biological. And if you disagree, consult the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, etc.
And thank God gay people can hide it. At least black people can go home, to family and friends, and be black. Instead of that, many gays get beaten up and thrown out on the street. As a culture, it's time to get past letting bitches like you in the media at all, as we did with the KKK.
@philippides Where are you getting your information? Homosexuality has never been proven to be a genetic or biological disorder. Until it can be proven, your entire argument is moot. And what does the KKK have to do with anything? All of your assertions are without evidence to back them up. You should do some research before running your mouth off and looking like a complete fool.
@caroln1858 This isn't about Special rights. This is the myth the religious right want to propagate. This is about equal rights for *consenting* adults. It's about ending discrimination on grounds of sexuality.
AIDS is not the consequence of 'sodomy' per se. It is the consequence of risky, non-safe sexual behaviour and other non-sexuak reasons eg drug use, blood transfusion. Straight people contract AIDS, with or without anal intercourse.
@chubsta2001 How do you explain AIDS being more predominant in the homosexual community? It would seem they tend to be more risky when it comes to sexual behavior, and if that is the case, then AIDS is evidence enough that such behavior is detrimental.
@vikingvoicesstud: Viruses don't have sexual orientation. Worldwide many more heteros have HIV than gays. And lesbians have the lowest STD rate of any group, so support marriage for GLBT.
Special rights for rapists, special rights for incestuous, special rights for heterosexuals, special rights for jerks, special rights for thin people or fat people, how about special rights for dual personalities, or bi-polars. The only right we have is the one we were born with, which is the right to exist, but other than that, Liberty is not license to do anything we want. Behaviors have consequences and AIDS is a consequence of Sodomy. So we need to condone it?
I think you've mistaken "special rights" for "basic human rights". Otherwise, we'd have to write into law special rights for every individual person for "rights" to have any force of law at all. What would that look like?
For you, a special right for dumb people to marry, for ignorant hyper-religious people to serve openly in the military.
@caroln1858: Fine - no "special rights" for anybody. The entire gay agenda fits into one word: 'Equality.' And AIDS globally infects far more heterosexual people, so your theory is based on bigotry.
@theshoottruth10 Fat people aren't a minority because although they have a defining characteristic (their excessive weight) they are in the majority. Over 60% of the population of the US, for example, are overweight.
LGB on the other hand make up only 5% of the population.
What difference does it make whether you can "see" the basis upon which someone's being discriminated against? Being Jewish isn't like being black, but you can't exclude someone from serving in the military on the basis of religion. Even IF that religion is "a choice"... So why allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation? Apologists for "tradition" have been dragged, kicking and screaming, out of the past and into the present about Blacks, Women, Jews and now Gays.
@gordon3186 What you call "discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation" only holds true if it can be proven without any doubt that said sexual orientation is uncontrollable (i.e. passed genetically). Thus far, there is no legitimate evidence to support such a claim. Therefore, homosexual behavior is voluntary, making it incomparable to a person's race or ethnicity. Big difference.
@vikingvoicesstud Sexual orientation does not need to be "passed genetically" to be uncontrollable. Not that I'm here to teach Biology, but throwing that out there.
You're a bit batty if you honestly think one can choose his or her sexual orientation. I've never even chosen an INDIVIDUAL I've been attracted to, much less a sex. This should be intuitively obvious to you.
Clearly homosexual behavior is voluntary. But homosexual behavior and homosexuality are two different things.
gays are not a minority. blacks are. they cannot help they are black. why dont all ass fuckers come out and say they are a minority. what about fat people.
@TheShootTruth10: If you don't think gays are the minority, you need to quit hanging out solely in gay bars. And your cranky obsession with anal makes me wonder, who hit yours?
@writerJerome gays are a minority. you said gays are like the new blacks? good we can put you in slavery for years and now we will call you gays niggers.
@TheShootTruth10 Not only did gays get tortured for thousands of years, today they are beaten, imprisoned and killed by vigilantes around the world. And in some nations like Uganda, the governments are willing to execute gays and imprison any straights who fail to "immediately" report a suspected gay. Hate is not a christian virtue. Repent
@oldmanjason96 Well, stay out of our business and we'll leave you alone.Don't deny us rights and we won't scare you so much. Don't act like pussies when we hold hands around you and we won't bug you. Stop bullying our kids and we won't mess with you. Better yet, why don't you become elusive in this society? It's your turn.
@TheNolo73 It's our turn? You're an idiot. It's statements like that which create an even bigger rift between heterosexuals and homosexuals. You aren't doing yourselvef any favors by spouting off such ridiculous, childish things. "It's your turn". Are you 10?
@vikingvoicesstud I think you're just scared. I'm not 10 just pissed that people like to play games with others like children. What I said is childish? How about the bullshit that's said about gays and lesbians on a constant basis. How are you changing anything by commenting to me when there is actual hatred and violence perpetrated towards a group of people? There is already a huge rift idiot. Why is it that you replied to me and not the one who commented to me? That's says volumes about you.
@vikingvoicesstud It feels good doesn't it. Commenting here and acting like your some school teacher coming to the rescue? Except you didn't do your homework and read the previous comments lazy.
Ann Coulter is so lucky to have Gays and Lesbians to talk about. She is so boring otherwise. She only makes people give a double take towards her when she says Gays because we're the new black. I've never heard of her until Gay came out of her mouth.
I don't respect Ann Coulter. I do respect Oprah Winfrey. From Wikipedia: "During a show on gay marriage in the 1990s, a woman in Winfrey's audience stood up to complain that gays were constantly flaunting their sex lives and she announced that she was tired of it. 'You know what I'm tired of", replied Winfrey, 'heterosexual males raping and sodomizing young girls. That's what I'm tired of." Winfrey uses her media platform to try to make this world a better place. Ann Coulter is a bully.
@dcjam12 I made no comment on how well slaves were treated. Treated well or not, it is morally reprehensible that a man could own another man for life. The immorality of this stance in the OT is evidenced by the fact that Christians try to distance themselves from it and cite the NT as 'replacing' these unacceptable passages. But, as my previous posts show, there are passages in the NT in support of slavery.
@chubsta2001 The Old Testament did not approve of slavery."He who kidnaps a man, whether he sells him or he is found in his possession, shall surely be put to death." (Exodus 21:16)
Voluntary slavery was widely practiced during biblical times, the Bible proscribes laws to protect the lives and health of slaves. Paul, the author of many of the New Testament writings, virtually ordered the Christian Philemon to release his Christian slave from his service to "do what is proper".
im a right winger but i sure DO NOT care one way or another about the sexuallity of anybody . thats their business and nobody elses . how simple is that ?
can you magine being married to Ann ? it wouldnt be bad if you were deaf and dumb , she could do all the talking LOL
@dcjam12 No, what you are referring to are Israelite slaves, who were treated better. Non-Israelite slaves, as per Lev. 25:44 could be enslaved until death.
You're not suggesting that people made slaves because they are captured prisoners of war is morally right are you?
Ephesians 6:5-9: "Servants (in this context meaning slave), be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling.."
I only ask as this seems to be condoning slavery as well doesn't it? It seems to be intent on aiding subjugation?
@chubsta2001 In the first century church, slaves were treated with respect, unlike what happened in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Slaves were able to marry, have children and buy property. Also, their servant-hood did not last. They would serve their masters for 7 years or until they reached age 30 under roman law. These slaves were not stolen from their homes, but were prisoners of war or they sold themselves to pay off family debts.

DCjam12 3 hours ago

If I go to it with my question above what answer does it give me?
chubsta2001 8 hours ago
"If I go to it with my question above what answer does it give me?"
You have to decide the answer for yourself unfortunately. But the bible's not perfect. If it was, Christians would've solved all of the world's problems years ago.
saxophone323 1 hour ago
@saxophone323 Well thanks for the condescension but I've read and studied the bible more than once! I've also heard differing opinions on its veracity by Christians and Jews.
I understand it is the work of a number of different men, but I'm having trouble understanding why a God would divinely inspire such gross inaccuracies? Sure, you'd expect some deviation but night-and-day difference?
chubsta2001 8 hours ago
@chubsta2001 It's not God's inspiration, it's a human failing or need. No one really knows who/ what God is or if he even exists. People just make him what they need him to be because they're scared that they are alone. Different books and meanings of the Bible are just the sign of their times by those humans' perspective. It's like not having the parents you needed so you look for a substitute instead of relying on yourself. IMO.

@dcjam12 If slavery - the buying of people for servitude - is not condoned in the bible, how do you explain Lev 25:44 -
"Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves."
"You can bequeath them to your children as inherited property and can make them slaves for life."
I mean, this seems pretty unambiguous to me?
chubsta2001 9 hours ago
@chubsta2001 As I mentioned before, voluntary servitude or servitude as result of punishment or conquest was not forbidden. There were laws to protect slaves. There is no contradiction. Here is only half of the passages that protected slaves. Ex 21:20,Ex 21:26-27,Dt 23:15-16,Ex 20:10,Dt 5:14,Lev 25: 39-43. It gets better. Slaves can be freed after 6 years and were given a surplus package.Dt 15:12-15.
DCjam12 6 hours ago
@hanohanonacowboy I'm not sure what your point is? I'm not stating the bible was written with me in mind. I'm questioning the fact that many Christians hold the bible as the immutable word of god and yet I can't understand why, on the subject of slavery in this example, there are major discrepancies, sometimes just pages or lines apart.
chubsta2001 9 hours ago
@chubsta2001
It requires a little more study than other books, like I don't know, say Harry Potter.
saxophone323 9 hours ago
@saxophone323 You believe it was written down by divinely inspired men. You have no proof of that. Considering how many times it says its ok to kill in the bible, that slavery is ok, & a whole host of other evil things. The bible is the holy book of your religion. Not mine. So dont try to pretend it should be the moral guide for everyone. I've read & studied the bible. The stuff that Jesus says is generally good (he doesnt call homosexuality a sin) the rest is nonsense at best.
phoenix1985 7 hours ago
@phoenix1985

@dcjam12 As stated, it appears there is a bias towards Israelites in these matters. There are many guidelines and restrictions about israelites becoming slaves but these rules don't appear to apply to Gentiles.

None of those rules applied to people outside that land.
hanohanonacowboy 11 hours ago
@chubsta2001 We have to make a distinction between slavery and punishment. Generally, the punishment was either banishment or servitude. Biblically, servitude as a result of punishment or conquest is not condemned or forbidden.
However, this form of servitude cannot be considered slavery, at least in its traditional sense. The act of buying, selling or enslaving an individual exclusively for the purpose of servitude is forbidden within the Bible
DCjam12 9 hours ago
@Dcjam12 Following on from the mixed messages, Lev 25:44-46 seems to directly contradict the edict set out in Ex 21:16. This states that it's fine to buy people: "...slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves."
It goes on to state that these slaves can be slaves 'for life.'
So who do we go with? Leviticus or Exodus 21:16? Why is God so confused on the matter?
chubsta2001 17 hours ago
@dcjam12 I understand there are passages in the OT that appear to stand against slavery. But, for example, in the same Exodus 21:7 it speaks of a father selling his daughter as a slave.
And all this still doesn't address the fact that the bible condoned the taking of people during war and using them as slaves. Deut 20:10-15 is particularly odious as it encourages the taking of women and children as spoils.
So, being generous, the bible sends out mixed messages on slavery. Why is this?
chubsta2001 17 hours ago

3.Neglected wives were automatically freed (Ex 21:10-11)

nicethoughts1 18 hours ago
@nicethoughts1 Sorry, should've worded this better.
I don't necessarily agree w/ the bible on that, but that's what it says.
saxophone323 9 hours ago
@saxophone323 Its what the bible says. Not what the generally accepted opinion of the scientific community is. So, since its all about procreation & not love, shouldnt we have children getting married as soon as the hit puberty to produce children? And, since love isnt a factor, shouldnt we go back to arranged marriage to produce the best stock? After all, if its just about having children, what should love matter? Love does matter. Its not all about sex, something you Christians just dont get.
phoenix1985 7 hours ago

@TheShootTruth10: Gays have been persecuted, abused, beaten, tortured, imprisoned and executed. The word "faggot" is the old British word for kindling wood; it became associated with homosexuals because so many were burned to death at the stake by "Christians". They have many thousands of years of abuse while the "blacks" endured centuries of it. Both were abused by "Christians" but liberal Christians brought love and freedom to both groups.

Sexual orientation is not a disease or an addiction, it is just a different way of loving. It is a gift God gives to a small percentage of all creatures, including humans. Surely his stance would be 'I don't care if it's legal, it is immoral and I won't stand for it.'?
chubsta2001 2 days ago
@vikingvoicesstud It is true there's a higher risk if you're gay AND behave irresponsibly in your sex life. But this isn't to say that being gay is detrimental per se, it's about behaviour which is why heteros contract it. 20% of gay people are living with HIV/AIDS but 80% don't have it.
Other STIs are more prominent amongst straights but no one would claim that heterosexuality is 'detrimental'
And for the record, gay women have the lowest STI rates out of everyone, including straights.

Argue for you prejudices and sure enough they're yours.
gordon3186 2 days ago
@YouHaveWonAFreeiPad Oh, and another note. Back before Loving v. Virginia, when interracial marriage was not legal, one could've used that same argument. The right to marry someone of a different race was not allowed for anyone, so you're not denying rights to a specific group, but everyone. Whites couldn't marry blacks just like blacks couldn't marry whites. Straight men can't marry men just like gay men can't marry men. Same line of thinking.
Miroku6510 2 days ago
@YouHaveWonAFreeiPad If you want to go down THAT route, it can still be considered a civil rights issue. Why let a man marry a woman, but not let a woman marry a woman? Or vice versa. This way it isn't a sexual orientation issue, but a sex one.
I'm interested to hear how same-sex marriage "perverts sexuality". Homosexuality is a part of sexuality already, by the way.

wtf does lady gaga have to do with this?!? leave her out of it. not all guys who like her are gay.
nejihyuga665 3 days ago
Well, we're sick of hearing from you, Ann Coulter.
Both gayness and blackness are genetic and biological. And if you disagree, consult the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association, etc.
And thank God gay people can hide it. At least black people can go home, to family and friends, and be black. Instead of that, many gays get beaten up and thrown out on the street. As a culture, it's time to get past letting bitches like you in the media at all, as we did with the KKK.
philippides 3 days ago
@philippides Actually, she could just consult anyone with more than 100 brain cells.
HopefulFear 3 days ago

Straight people contract AIDS, with or without anal intercourse.
chubsta2001 3 days ago
@chubsta2001 How do you explain AIDS being more predominant in the homosexual community? It would seem they tend to be more risky when it comes to sexual behavior, and if that is the case, then AIDS is evidence enough that such behavior is detrimental.

@vikingvoicesstud Promiscuous gay men aren't promiscuous because they're gay. They're promiscuous because they're men.

@vikingvoicesstud: Viruses don't have sexual orientation. Worldwide many more heteros have HIV than gays. And lesbians have the lowest STD rate of any group, so support marriage for GLBT.
writerJerome 1 day ago 8
I find it worst for a woman or a black person to discriminate against gays, considering that women and blacks were discriminated groups.
DeadFishFactory 3 days ago 2
Special rights for rapists, special rights for incestuous, special rights for heterosexuals, special rights for jerks, special rights for thin people or fat people, how about special rights for dual personalities, or bi-polars. The only right we have is the one we were born with, which is the right to exist, but other than that, Liberty is not license to do anything we want. Behaviors have consequences and AIDS is a consequence of Sodomy. So we need to condone it?
caroln1858 3 days ago
@caroln1858
I think you've mistaken "special rights" for "basic human rights". Otherwise, we'd have to write into law special rights for every individual person for "rights" to have any force of law at all. What would that look like?
For you, a special right for dumb people to marry, for ignorant hyper-religious people to serve openly in the military.
philippides 3 days ago
@caroln1858: Fine - no "special rights" for anybody. The entire gay agenda fits into one word: 'Equality.' And AIDS globally infects far more heterosexual people, so your theory is based on bigotry.
writerJerome 1 day ago
@theshoottruth10 Fat people aren't a minority because although they have a defining characteristic (their excessive weight) they are in the majority. Over 60% of the population of the US, for example, are overweight.
LGB on the other hand make up only 5% of the population.
chubsta2001 3 days ago
What difference does it make whether you can "see" the basis upon which someone's being discriminated against? Being Jewish isn't like being black, but you can't exclude someone from serving in the military on the basis of religion. Even IF that religion is "a choice"... So why allow discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation? Apologists for "tradition" have been dragged, kicking and screaming, out of the past and into the present about Blacks, Women, Jews and now Gays.
gordon3186 3 days ago
@gordon3186 What you call "discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation" only holds true if it can be proven without any doubt that said sexual orientation is uncontrollable (i.e. passed genetically). Thus far, there is no legitimate evidence to support such a claim. Therefore, homosexual behavior is voluntary, making it incomparable to a person's race or ethnicity. Big difference.
vikingvoicesstud 3 days ago

TheShootTruth10 3 days ago
@TheShootTruth10: If you don't think gays are the minority, you need to quit hanging out solely in gay bars. And your cranky obsession with anal makes me wonder, who hit yours?
writerJerome 1 day ago
@writerJerome gays are a minority. you said gays are like the new blacks? good we can put you in slavery for years and now we will call you gays niggers.
TheShootTruth10 1 day ago
@TheShootTruth10 Not only did gays get tortured for thousands of years, today they are beaten, imprisoned and killed by vigilantes around the world. And in some nations like Uganda, the governments are willing to execute gays and imprison any straights who fail to "immediately" report a suspected gay. Hate is not a christian virtue. Repent

@TheNolo73 It's our turn? You're an idiot. It's statements like that which create an even bigger rift between heterosexuals and homosexuals. You aren't doing yourselvef any favors by spouting off such ridiculous, childish things. "It's your turn". Are you 10?
vikingvoicesstud 3 days ago
@vikingvoicesstud I think you're just scared. I'm not 10 just pissed that people like to play games with others like children. What I said is childish? How about the bullshit that's said about gays and lesbians on a constant basis. How are you changing anything by commenting to me when there is actual hatred and violence perpetrated towards a group of people? There is already a huge rift idiot. Why is it that you replied to me and not the one who commented to me? That's says volumes about you.

Paul, the author of many of the New Testament writings, virtually ordered the Christian Philemon to release his Christian slave from his service to "do what is proper".

can you magine being married to Ann ? it wouldnt be bad if you were deaf and dumb , she could do all the talking LOL
throwerofturds 4 days ago
@dcjam12 No, what you are referring to are Israelite slaves, who were treated better. Non-Israelite slaves, as per Lev. 25:44 could be enslaved until death.
You're not suggesting that people made slaves because they are captured prisoners of war is morally right are you?

@captainuniverse100 Also, is that the very same St Paul who in the NT said:
Ephesians 6:5-9: "Servants (in this context meaning slave), be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling.."
I only ask as this seems to be condoning slavery as well doesn't it? It seems to be intent on aiding subjugation?
chubsta2001 4 days ago
@chubsta2001 In the first century church, slaves were treated with respect, unlike what happened in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. Slaves were able to marry, have children and buy property. Also, their servant-hood did not last. They would serve their masters for 7 years or until they reached age 30 under roman law. These slaves were not stolen from their homes, but were prisoners of war or they sold themselves to pay off family debts.
DCjam12 4 days ago
@DCjam12: You write a version of slavery which sounds so nice. Too bad it has no connection to reality.
