Castro got billions from the Soviets. He spent the money around the world to enhance his image as a leader of the Third World and let Cuba waste away. The Embargo did and does have some impact but their is no excuse for Cuba to go from the most prosperous nation in the America in the 1940s and 50s to a broken and ruined country.
Dissolving the US embargo on Cuba (which is actually illegal under international law) should have been done ages ago. The Cold War is over and the USSR doesn't exist anymore. The US placed the embargo for the purpose of drastically lowering the living standard in Cuba and thus, forcing the Cubans to rebel against Fidel Castro. It didn't work and Cuba and Fidel Castro became an even bigger symbol of resistance against US imperialism. Cuban motto "Homeland or Death."
The Embargo has provided Castro with a convenient excuse for his gross mismanagement. Cuba had the 3rd highest standard of living in Latin America before Castro. It was his natiionalistion of everything with out compensation that caused the exodus and the Embargo. Besides there's no Canadian or European embargo. Castro's brainless dictatoral socialism, vs. democratic solicism is responsibile for the decay and desparate.
The embargo has failed!! it hasn´t hurt cuban government but its people by giving them a very low quality lifestyle because the limitacion and producction of the economy. In the other hand, the embargo has risen the cuban patriotic feeling toward its Revolution and a great and inspiring creativity to face dificulties. The whole world has witness the amazing and dignifying efforts and guts shown by cubans to survive and get over the criminal embargo, leaving the US waiting for more than 50 years
The error in thinking is that sanctions will encourage revolt by the people, reformation comming in that way. But I think all that does is generate anger and suspision, and tightens a governments grip on its people. Korea is a worse case scenerio come true. We may have opertunity now with Cuba. Maybe.
However, American goods do make into Cuba, if only in short order. But we're the ones being deprived of those sweet, sweet cigars.
Comprende? In order to succede with Fidel, Raul, or whomever comes after, a change in policy is in order. The support of the people of Cuba comes before, and is different than, the support of the government of Cuba.
