Awesome playing! :D You have inspired me to make this the 3rd ragtime song I will eventually play in my lifetime. I'm still working on my first favorite right now, yup, Entertainer: Then Ragtime Dance and then this (thanks to you)! Keep it up. :3
i'm currently learning this, and your rendition has been invaluable to the process :D thanks very much! absolutely fabulous playing, by the way!
i see we share a similar playing style - not so hot on the sight reading, but can recite things from memory without breaking a sweat. i'm yet to decide whether this is a blessing or a curse! :P
@vladinho7 — Thanks so much for your very kind comment. I have heard that Magnetic Rag is supposedly fairly difficult to play, but despite that fact that I am a terrible reader and take forever to learn new pieces, it was actually easier to learn that I expected. I feel that I'm able to play it better than anything else in my tiny repertoire.
IMHO the difficulty w/ the rag is to play it w/ great sensitivity, use of rubato, & bringing out the underlying pathos which lies beneath a superficial smile on top.
Learning this at the moment and its very good , an inspiration to amateur joplin players, im also learning weeping willow rag and know a simplified version of maple leaf rag at only 15 :) i hope one day i can play this as well as you
I like your interpretation of the piece very much, especially the choice of tempo. As illustrated by other posted performances of this rag, even very accomplished players miss the mark by playing it too quickly and turning it into a dull demonstration of technique. You gave it a little room to breathe, so to speak, and let us appreciate the unique, almost melancholy, nature of Joplins final published work . Thank You!!!
2:58 - 3:50... God, this is my favorite part it just sounds soo serious, like greatness, i like to put high my chin when I hear this, specially when 2 like worrying scales come together. Oh so fantastic playing my friend!
hey! this is the best version of this piece i have ever heard in my life!! please take a look at my tutorial and the real version please. comment and rate! thank you
Excellent interpretation. It's lively and yet very tempo conscious. Most people play this piece WAY too fast. The song should always tailor out to a MINIMUM of 5 minutes in my opinion, but really not more than about 5:35 or 5:45 otherwise it's too slow (assuming the song is played completely through including all repeats. Great job!
You were playing that, with NO music?? Wow!! You, my friend, have a memory like a steel trap!
Also, I disagree with the people who've said that you were playing it too slow. Scott Joplin himself had said many times, "Notice: Do not play this piece fast. It is never right to play 'Ragtime' fast." Plus, it just sounds better when it's slow. :)
I have listened to Magnetic Rag at least 1000 times. Mostly, New England Conservatory Ragtime Ensemble. Yours is pretty good but maybe a bit slower. Just my opinion but this has to be the most difficult Joplin rag. Good job.
Thanks very much Lisa. I really do like playing this with some "bounce" in it - just sounds right to my ear. I hope you have a great time learning it, since it's so much fun to play.
Ah, man... sporadic practicing since I've been running all over the place lately. Incidentally, I've been playing guitar more than piano lately, which is unfortunate because piano is what I'm better at. Once I get a bit more motivation, I'll throw it up!
Dementia from syphilis. Too bad Treemonisha hasn't held the stage. He yearned for its success, an all black opera, and had he had more time, would probably have done it. Don't be shy, dude. You played a complicated piece very smoothly and Wonderfully! Don't take this personally. The more pianists I find on you tube, the more I notice bad pianos, not bad playing. The Knabe needs work, but you played well! Back in college, this piece was more common with piano majors & not well known by others.
i actually play more Nightwish (at the piano) (Ever Dream etc) than other !...Loads of hurrah for you, i apreciate a lot the way you play here, and more generally this style of music.
Thank you (and everyone else) for so many nice comments. Everything I can find about this piece indicates that it was published in 1914, so I'm pretty sure I got the year right.
Joplin died in April, 1917 at only 49 or 50, after a somewhat long illness. What a shame his career was cut short so soon after creating such great work like Magnetic. Makes me think of Mozart or the Beatles... we'll never know what fantastic work might have been created with just a few more years.
yeah... and another great rag you can learn by him is his crash collision march! lol i would recommend it lol its a great song! good luck! and keep up the good work!
Ragtime has such a wonderful intoxicating charm. I'm currently learning how to play this and you've provided great inspiration. The tempo and feeling was spot on.
Bravo, BRAVO! 5 stars! A tour de force performance, and a joy to listen to. Both technically and musically, you've got this one nailed. And your piano sounds fantastic, too. I do hope you're going to post more of your playing on YT. -Paul
This is a very good rendition. It's hard to find a good version on Youtube, and it's obvious that you really enjoy playing through what I hear. You do exactly as I do at point £:22 though when playing, whihc is look away from the keys. Well done on the playing though!

Well done, and you managed to pull some nice sound out of a baby grand, which usualy sounds quite bad.
I'm learning that rag myself now =) Of all of Joplin's rags this is among the hardest ones.
I enjoyed listening!
