@elephantgodess Give it a rest. Learning another language is an enriching experience for any person. Latino Americans deserve politicians who take the time to understand their lives and culture.

I am going to reply to you anyway, though you nicely asked me not to.
I think your response shows you have made my point. Communication for unity, friendliness and trust is paramount. And it is totally relevant to my point.
Not long ago, I watched a court show where two black women had developed a different language (which they were very good at), for the sole purpose to keep others from knowing what they were saying, so they could disrespect others between themselves. The husband of one of the women was being disrespected, and the marriage finally fell apart. The judge, who was a black woman, verbally bitch slapped them for their disrespect of the husband and others.
To those of you suffering from chronic monolinguilism, I can assure you that the only thing Senator Van de Putte is raising here is a Democratic majority!
I suppose you are right. I should learn Italian and Yiddish along with Celtic, Portuguese, too. Learning languages of all countries of Africa, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Tagalog, Dutch, German, French, Swedish, Polish, Czech, Ukrainian, whatever languages the Iraqs, Iranians, Afghanistans, and Turks speak, Greek and Russian for other communities in America - that should make us really UNITED, eh?.
How are your multi, multi language skills coming along, gloomyoutlook?
I don't suppose the other single language speakers who don't speak Spanish, would agree with you there (and they may not agree with me, either).
Humans want what they know, and resist change or being forced to learn things they don't want to learn. That is one reason, legal American immigrants have, in the past, insisted that their children learn English early on, since it is harder to learn (and want to learn) later in life.
Lawd!! Now see even I am mad Madam Speaker Pelosi! Her speech needs to be in English also!!! This sounds like something Senator McCain would pull!! You have a state senator who gives a response and the majority of this country can't even understand what she is saying!!! I'm going to listen to some Tab Benoit!! I can understand him!!!
What freaking country does this Senator PUTA represent? Isn't she supposed to be representing AMERICANS? And who exactly elected her? Mexican citizens? Why is there a need for the State of the Union address to be interpreted into SPANISH? Hispanic citizens are required to know English.. or are they not?
Senator Van de Putte represents ME, I'm proud to say, a resident of TX Senate District 26. She has been elected and re-elected by overwhelming majorities that are way above the Hispanic population of her district.
How-dee! Sounds like you understand English. I don't understand much Spanish, mainly because English is the official language in America and I didn't think I would be traveling/living in any country where I needed to learn another language. A representative that gives a speech in any other language than the official language, seems to me, to not be representing ALL (if any) Americans (or Texans as the case may be, since all Texans/Americans are presumed to understand the official language)
Excuse me! That is completely disrespectful of Senator Van de Putte.. You show your pure ignorance of the constituency of Senator Van de Putte... I assure you that she is speaking on behalf of her constituents. As a member of her extended family I am insulted and angered by your crass remarks.
Representatives Robert Wexler (D-FL), Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) and Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), all Members of the House Judiciary Committee, Wexler has launched an ambitious online effort to mobilize support for immediate impeachment hearings for Vice President Dick Cheney! Act now! Spread the word for support, as big media won't! Sign the petition, and pass on information!
Blah, blah, blah....Whether democrat or republican all the rhetoric is the same. Federal spending has tripled since 1965 under both party control, showing no let-up in any year since then. The idea that one party is conservative or liberal is pure crap. Both spend more than they receive while the democrats are just more egregious about it. Take back our government: elect Ron Paul
My ancestor were foreign WE ASSIMILATED >>>WE LEARNED ENGLISH>>>WE BECAME AMERICANS NOT MEXICANS

It breeds suspicion, distrust & non-unity.

Hmmm. What audience is she addressing? For all I know, she is using treasonous language to raise up a revolution.
Can I go to Mexico, and have the representatives there speak English so I can understand them? No? I didn't think so.

Thanks for the education, but you have forgotten the thousands of other languages of the world, along with their varieties of dialects.
