@Dororoisawesome Pattern terms and instructions are unfortunately not standardized, so your pattern might be assuming that you would pick up any wraps as you work past them. To prevent any holes, I would go ahead and pick up the wrap stitches as you work your short rows.
Greetings! I am working on a hat pattern that has short rows. This video was very helpful, but I have another question. My pattern tells me to slipturn, weave 2 back, k6, weave 2 front, slipturn. As far as I can tell, slipturn is the same things as wrap and turn. I can't figure out how to weave 2 front and back. The instructions say to lift 2 stitches while weaving the thread back of the first stitch and to the front of the next stitch. Any help explaining how to do this? Thanks! :)
Finally! I'd just done some short rows that I thought were correct, but there were still tiny little holes. I wasn't keeping my wraps loose! Now I can finally finish this sweater, without any holes!
Very helpful. I was hating my short rows because I had nasty little holes on the unworked side of the wrap. Kelly explained that by holding the yarn loose I could avoid this. Hooray!
Thank you. Clear, concise, to the point. I can now see what short rows are, how they would be useful. I think I'll be able to use this in the sweater I'm currently working on to make the front fit better.
Hi Kelly, thank you for this video. My question is, if I made short rows for a round neck, then pick up the live stitches (all around front and back) and then I start knitting the border of the neck. But in this first row I have to pick up the wraps, and face the wrapped stitches from the other side (the collar of the wrap is first than the wrapped stitch) Hope this make sense. How do I do this? Help please! and thanks.
I felt this was the besst explanation for short rows after watching many other videos. She is very good. Now I wish she would show how to pick up the stiches on the rest of a heal. After seven rows you have to go back to your regular stitching.
@kalirose23 Hi! Did you know we just posted an entire video class on techniques for picking up stitches? I would suggest that video if you need more help picking up stitches on the heel, good luck and happy knitting :)
me too, i COULD not figure this out until seeing the video... so my project does have the 'beginner' look exactly like in the video! :( but no big deal, the goal of this project was also in part to learn how to do it... so i'll know next time around. Many many thanks for this!
I could not for the life of me figure out how to do this till I watched this video! Very clear instructions and helpful! Now I can attempt to do a project I have wanted to do for a very long time but could not because I was mystified by how to do this =)
Thank you! I have just been trying to make my first pair of toe-up socks and it called for the wrap and turn. I had no clue, ended up with the holes you demonstrated and had to rip it out. Now I can try again!
This video was exactly what I needed to see/know, and fortunately it was the first one I found in my search, so I didn't have to go through a bunch of poorly done ones to get here. Yea!
Thanks for sharing your expertise...so expertly! :-)
this is amazing!! thank you SOSOSO much for explaining this in a way that actually makes sense, a strong contrast to a few little pictures in the back of a book! I really appreciate this, as so many projects in my newest book call for this method and I couldn't make them!
Hi Kelley, I LOVE your videos, they are so great, you do such a good job explaining things. I have a question about making baby socks I hope you can explain. The pattern I'm looking at says (working on 12 sts), Sl 1, P10, W&T. I'm confused because I don't know how you can do the wrap and turn with only one stitch on the end. Basically the entire heel is made up this way with the next row being Sl 1, K9, W&T. Can you do the W&T with one stitch left on the end like this? Thanks! I'm new :(
This is such a wonderful video. As a new knitter, I always have to look up videos to explain the many acronyms in patterns. I browsed through several videos of wrap and turn explanations before I found this one and it's the best yet. The samples give a great visual of what you want to avoid, and the explanation of why is FANTASTIC and so RARE in any type of teaching. though the video felt a little long-winded, the voice is quite pleasant and now understand how and why to wrap a stitch. Thank you
great videos you have here! but i have more questions! i am trying to make knitted arms for a doll. my pattern says knit 1 row, then purl 1 row (then starts with purlrow again) and ALL but the first 2 have w&t., if i have stitches on the Left needle when i w&t what do i do with them keep them until after EIGHT rows???
@harelquindemon Yes, short rows can be certainly used for more than two rows, you would just keep going a few stitches past your w&t on each side, so the short rows eventually get longer and longer.
EXCELLENT video. I am so glad to see a tutorial that explains short rows in detail, as well as have good clear video. Thank you Knitpicks! Keep more videos like this coming.
I only need to learn how to do a SHORT ROW WITHOUT WRAPPING..
I can not find anyone on the web to show me how to do this method.
Need some help.. thanks.

I tried to do them loosely, they don't look good at all. Will need to pull the yarn a bit to tighten it up.
