Back then, $1 would buy the same items $5.50 would buy today. So when Edith is talking about her chicken being $.29\lb, she means $1.60 worth today. Which is pretty much what it does go for at the grocery store down the block.
I had not considered that Archie was talking about his take-home pay. So $270/wk net take-home for blue-collar labor makes sense in today's dollars; especially with their higher tax-brackets and stagflation back then.
Nixon did remove the Gold Standard from the dollar. For folks that don't know, that's why you hear so much about inflation in shows created during this time frame. Partly, it's why we still have to grapple with keeping it under control now. Some of that fault belongs with the Fed. And that's another kettle of fish altogether. lol
I cannot believe the numbers they cite! Gloria is ecstatic about bringing home a $41 pay check, and Archie is worried about losing a $5 dependent forgiveness on his taxes! Mike has no concept of the Constitution, however. The First Amendment specifically separates church and state, therefore, churches cannot be taxed. Besides, most churches (the cults aside) spend so much more in terms of charity, education and medical care. Chicken, 29 cents a pound, hamburger 98 cents! Yikes!
@aushorecm For some strange reason, back then people awoke and fully dressed, shoes and all just to sit around the house, just like they do on this show. I never do that. Sometime I bed out all day in my jammies.
@aushorecm My Mother would throw anything she could reach if i stepped in the house with my shoes on. Shoes are not suppose to be worn indoors since we step on too much shit
I believe the yellow can is just a fictional non descript brand. In the first season it was a white can I believe, though there were many things that were different in that first season. This episode I believe is from season 2, a magical season. For me everything from season 1-4 is gold. It gets spottier in the later years though there is great dramatic work done by Stapleton and O'Connor. And the "pecker" line is one of the great bring the house down lines in AITF history.
I think the pecker gag line from Edith was meant as an innocent remark on her part, meaning he pecks her on the cheek. But of course Archie seemed embarrassed & disgusted, and the audience broke out in laughter because of the double entendre in that remark.
what brand of beer does archie drink? Orange can? I realize it might be fictional. They used to do a lot of fictional drinks for shows in those days. Any hardcore aitf fans know?
Don't know if it has an orange can or not, but in the episode "Archie's Chair" he mentioned that he drank Schlitz. That would be a great episode to be posted!
Fictional brand, before product placement happened brands had to be what they call "greeked" so say Stroh's would not be mad if the show they advertised on had a big can of Miller on the screen.
$50 a week is what Archie makes (3:47)??
Even if you measure that for inflation, that's like $270 a week in today's value.
How can you live off that?!

@ligreekguy You're right! If you want separation of church and state (which we should), you can't tax churches. Can't have it both ways.

@shootinair What I think Archie's look really is, is Carroll O'Connor cracking up and covering for it.
