I cannot wait to get home and start testing this OS, looks like it's going to be fantastic release, I managed to snag the beta the other night before the servers went crazy
I have a pretty nice custom built PC right now running SLI graphics, core2 duo, and 2gigs of FAST 800mhz ram. But because Vista is resource hungry, it runs above average instead of running super fast. So by upgrading to Windows 7, I would be getting a much fast computer without having to upgrade the hardware. Thats nice but I still dont' wan to have to pay for a new OS.
What pisses me off is that Vista has only been out a few years and now I have to buy a new operating system for all my new computers. This fact alone may convince me to go Apple. :-(
i forget where i heard honestly but it was the night before they launched the beta for windows 7 and i was surfing around, i might have heard it here.....
I read the same thing, I think it was on ZDNet. Ballmer himself, I believe, said that Win 7 upgrade would be free to Vista users. If they do that, it would be the smartest thing marketing wise MS has done in a long time.
I believe it was talking about OEM versions of Vista sold after a certain date in 2009, not the retail ones! My bet is that Vista owners will get a discount when buying Windows 7!
It will also be an admission from Microsoft that they knew how bad Vista was all along. I would love to see it! This would be a slap in the face to anyone who has ever argued in favor of Vista.
I think that whole Windows 7 roll out has been an admission from MS that Vista wasn't ready for prime time. Looks like they're actually paying attention to what consumers want. With such a large public beta roll-out, they may actually get some things right.
All programs that run on Vista run also on Windows 7 (drivers included), DX11 will be also on Vista, IE8 etc. Nobody force you to upgrade!
With Apple every time a new OS appears you need to buy a new computer because of course you cannot upgrade the old one! For example PowerPC's cannot run Snow Leopard! LOL!
So what it will be: pay 2000$ for a new Mac or 150$ for a new OS?
And don't forget: Once you decide to play in the Apple sandbox, you are stuck in the Apple sandbox. ;-)
Looks like Windows 7 hardware requirements aren't as high as Vista's. If MS doesn't screw up the RTM version, they may do something that they have never done before, release an OS that's less resource intensive than its predecessor.
Windows 7 runs pretty good and im using the release candidate. My PC is a gaming PC pretty much and runs pretty well and startup is fast is aswell.

I didn't see too much difference between Vista and 7. Just a few minor tweaks with speed and GUI.
I'll stick to KDE :-)

I'll have to see it to believe it. Microsoft has never given away an OS.

You are correct. Word is that starting 1 July, some OEMs will provide free Windows 7 upgrade certificates. Read it on ZDNet.
