@operationcwaI789789 Just a FYI.The F-111 Does not have ejection "seats". The entire forward cockpit area is a modular capsule fired off with rockets. There are small control surfaces at the forward wing root area that give the capsule limited maneuvering capability. Needless to say the F-111 was an aircraft WAY ahead of it's time. Inertial navigation system, "swing wings", mach 2.5 + capability and terrain following radar all made this aircraft a pioneer in advanced aviation in the 1960's.
I was there doing a delivery to Amberly when this happened.... awesome to see it again.
Btw, that plane DID fly again, I saw her being repaired a month later while I was taking some sound proof doors to the base for a building extension that was being done, the hanger they were fixing her in was right next to where the building work was being done.
Beautiful example of an emergency landing. Definitely looks like, with just a little bit of work, that plane very easily could fly again as the cameraman said.
Wow, hard to believe this was 3 years ago. I remember being at work and a workmate got a call this thing was flying around.
Just to resolve a few things here, the main wheel fell off on takeoff, the crew decided it would be better to land with gear up rather than with a missing wheel. The F111 was designed for carrier use, thats why it has a hook, but the US navy used the F14 instead. The F111 has been a fantastic aircraft, the best in it's field, the Super Hornet is a stop gap nothing more.

A remarkably cool-headed, calm & collected, very-capable landing under emergency conditions. Good training & protocol really does pay off. The RAAF is one of the best-trained & capable flying outfits in the world. Go you Aussie Top Guns !!
@19hobbes The RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) also flew F-111C's. They were set to retire in 2010. The USAF retired F-111 years ago (the last being EF-111's. I was a crew chief on the D model at Cannon AFB, NM from 1984-1987.
@Robbob9933 As pointed out by several I completly forgot about the RAAF flying ardvarks. I'm pretty sure we (USAF) retired them after Desert Storm, around 1998. I used to enjoy watching them take off when I was at RAF Lakenheath in the mid 80s. We had the G varient there.

It wasn't all that smooth really but not due to pilot input. That cable being grabbed by that hook at such speed really plopped it down hard. If the runway was long enough, I would have opted for a long slide instead.
That idiot McNamara wanted the F-111 for the navy, but there is no way it could have operated effieciently off a carrier. I think that is why they designed the F-14, if I'm not mistaken.
Old Plane Indeed - Initially Designed in 1964 and in Australian service in 1973. I think the Australian Government has really let the nation down here - I mean how are we supposed to compete with a relatively obsolete bomber. Now they're screwing us over with the F-35 instead of the more capable F-22 Raptor. That and there are no aircraft carriers. Disgrace.
It wasn't a fake, on takeoff the wheel fell off, he was forced to either land it or eject, by instructions of pilots on the ground him and his navigator extended the tailhook and then belly landed it. No one was harmed, the pilot had only been flying F111s for 2 weeks. RAAF PRIDE
This happened on an RAAF Training mission at the Amberley Airforce Base in Australia... Not Iraq. The pilot was a student under instruction when one of the rear wheels didn't retract. Big news at the time.
wow really ur a retard... the tailhook isn't used for a one time deal most millitary planes have a tailhook because they are compatible with an aircraft carrier. short runways meen they have a tailhook to slow them down fast enough b4 they run off the side!
The F-111 is not a naval aircraft. In this case it is a one use hook. Just like the F-16, F-15... should I go on? By the way, I have been working on F-18's for 5 years so I know a thing or two about aircraft that are "compatible with aircraft carriers".
like i said b4 ur a friggn retard 1 time use bah might as well shoot urself in the head! Just because u think you have ballz to say you worked on f-18s doesn't make u a pro go work on ur models boy and leave the descussion's to the big boys that are actually navalaviators! friggn scrub if u even know what that means!
haha u didn't mention the F-111B???? it is a naval aircraft? read this "The F-111B was the naval version of the TFX fighter project, which had been decreed by Secretary of Defense McNamara to be designed in common with the Air Force version, even though the requirements were completely different. " Search for General Dynamics/Grumman F-111B
The F-111 was originally designed as a naval fleet defense fighter in the late 60's before the navy decided it was not appropriate as a carrier based fighter after carrier qualifications and instead went with the Grumman F-14 in the early 70's and the USAF showed interest in the F-111. Naval pilots also didn't like the F-111's side-by-side seating.
