But you cannot deny that there is a huge 'shared' basket of parts. A Mondero is actually quite a lot more spacious than an X-Type and both look utterly different - so it's clear that the basis had been altered rather than be a bolt-for-bolt set-up.
As I said. Economics rule and sharing common componentry is a must in this day and age. Chrysler and Mercedes were another case-in-point. People positively DO 'pay for the name'...
I have got a very good hint for you to keeping the nice old Engine in good shape with todays ultra dry eco fuels: Use 1:100 API TC two stroke oil / fuel mix as regular driving fuel, that keeps the old fuel-system gaskets, rubber parts, alloy parts etc... and cast iron metal surfaces of those vintage engines in excellent shape...and it also lubricates the valves and upper piston regions. Most Porsche vintage owners in Germany do so :) Also keeps carbs and tank clean and rustfree
The Transmission and engine on all RR and Bentleys before they were taken over by VW and BMW came from GM, the suspension was from CItreon, only the body and interior was made by RR. its like driving an old Chevy, talk about a rip off.
Even the body shells were made by Rover in Longbridge. They were assembled and 'finished' by hand at Crewe by Rolls Royce Motor Cars,
Lights came from France, EFI from Bosch - the list is endless. Necessity is the mother of invention. Rolls and Bentley obviously never wanted for anything!
The Continental Flying Spur and the GT are VW Phaeton under the skin. A Phaeton is just an overgrown Passatt.
X-Type Jags are Mondeos. It's the way of the world ...
Most OEMs don't make their own auto 'boxes (Merc do but BMW/Jag use ZF, as do many others).
X-Types are NOT Mondeos. This is a popular misconcenption (I was at Jag when X400 was still in the design stage). They started life as sharing the same floorpan in concept but by the time the X-Type went to production so many changes had been required the two floor pans were very different.
I'm proud to belong a RR Silver Spur even if I admit: she's always hungry but any other Piece of art (the word isn't too much to describe this perfection on wheels) could produce such an effect on the people who are looking you and moreover, on myself. Silence, pleasure, serenity.... No words could qualifiate a RR
I drive an old RR camargue, It's in a really bad shape but it's still not a bad car to drive and you can still feel that I used to be a luxurious car. even when you compare it with some new cars!
I also believe that the Camargue provided a bit of a benchmark for the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Bentley Mulsanne Turbo's outward appearance. It was the first of the boxy looking Rolls-Royces of the 80's and 90's.
I hope you keep driving the Camargue for many years to come!
ya u r right but not so much thank god that they hv changed there interior style otherwise it was also so old a whole wood dash board with speedo and other things all in round shape
Become an environmentalist like me...buy a Rolls like mine and you won't be able to afford to drive anywhere! Save the planet and look cool at the same time!
"Finest cars in the world" my ass. Like a 59 silver cloud with a G.M. trany and a copy of a 1950 cadillac engine. Wake up, your fine limey cars are now German, Its called B.M.W. Your Rolls could never compete with Mercedes. Who makes the finest cars? Das Kraut. Pompous English bastards. Remember, if it wasnt for the U.S., you would all be German, and better people.
The engine is actually a refined version of an American V8 made by Buick. Rolls-Royce always endeavoured to source the finest componentry and refine them to such an extent, that they befitted the marque.
I own Mercedes cars as well as Rolls-Royce & Bentley. Whilst the Mercedes cars are mechanically very good, they pale in comparison to Rolls & Bentley in terms of stature and presence.
oh yeah whats that the Toyata Prius that burns up so much energy and resources that it costs as much as a Jeep Grand Cherokee in its life time? sorri I workd for Toyota and the Prius is a pathetic publicity stunt
Do yourselves all a favour and buy vehicles that don't cost the earth. Its tasteless and vulgar to use the worlds resources in this way? Toyota prius now that's a breath of fresh air!!
Add all the fuel used in all the Rolls Royce and Bentleys world wide and it's a drop in the ocean - because the cars are so exclusive and rare. Tott up the amount of fuel used in Toyotas or Fords (i.e. run of the mill cars) and it is THEY who account for the majority of fuel used.
I have been accused of being lacking in taste by a guy driving a Citroen 2CV - which did a bout 2 miles per gallon (of engine oil). The smoke screen was utilied to hide his embarrassment - presumably?
You have a beautiful Bentley.. I looks perfect, cigh-class-good-taste! I did not pay good enough tention last time, so thats a great car. (bulletproof on the other one? Hmm, a special person? hehe. Well, your car is something different from mine: Opel Calibra, good on the snow, but it is boring when I look at for ex your Bentey! Oslo
I still have the Bentley but I have now started buing good Volvos. I have a 24 year old Volvo 740 which is like new and I am really smitten with it.
I am interested in many different makes - especially the ones that have been a part of my life as Volvo has been (and IS again now!). Everyone should drive what THEY like!
Yes, some like the daughter, some like the mother.. Manta was really something the early days, not often to see nowadays. And Volvos, the older ones in Norway we call them "Traktors", "Horses" or vovv (like barkin dog", -but that is bechause those cars never seemes to stop!! Volvos was the first cars to seriously try to make it safer on the road.. Now owned by Ford..
HA!! I like it! A turbo R - wow! They look great in royal blue. Does it have magnolia hide?
Mine's a Bentley Eight - same as yours but with no turbo. Shame - I'm a married bloke with three kids - but if you have a really nice Turbo R - I may be willing to experiment!
Yes lovely magnolia hide - no coloured piping - it took me a long time to find one exactly like that, i saw an identical one at the motor show in 85 I think when I was a spotty teenager and I told the snooty salesman I would have one of those one day!
Thanks for the kind offer, but I am not sure what my boyfriend of 23 years (about 4 centuries in gay years!) would think!
Good luck with your eight, I bet your kids like it!
Funny how most Bentley owners have the Bentley aspiration from early on in life - and a preconceived idea relating to colour and trim also! I slso remember the snooty salesmen (in Henleys of Chester) where they used to dress like butlers - pin stripes and tails complete with special white gloves which they used to wipe off finger marks. That was in the mid-70's when my Dad used to buy his Silver Shadows!
A pink Bentley you say? Now THATS what I call showing off! hehe.. Oh well, if you can afford it, the choice is yours. I did want to ask you what older Bentley or RR you would recommend to someone who can't afford a new one? As far as reliability and repair costs are concerned? Personally, I love them from the 90's. Thanks mate.
The answer to that is buy a decent one that's been well looked after. I have avoided Turbo Bentleys (naturally aspirated cars appear to give more by way of reliability). Just wait until you can buy one from someone who has obviously taken a great deal of pride in the car and has owned it just for pure enjoyment. Bentleys appear to be more desireable than Rolls Royce - but the Seraph is a good solid car.
Can you please tell me the name of the group and song on this video? It is superb, and for the record, I AM gay, and your right, many showbiz types are indeed gay, because we are wonderfully creative people who make the world a more interesting place to be. Good job here and cheers mate!
I am NOT gay. Just in case you thought. I didn't realise that these guys are gay either. Mind you, most showbiz types are gay - so I'm not really surprised. Song chosen for title opposed to sexuality!
Please...why buy a bentley or a rolls (although rolls is nice) if you can drive a porsch or something that can be fast ... i wouldnt drive one of them if i had the money for them its way to heavy
Have you ever driven a Bentley Flying Spur or a Bentley Arnarge T? Or, my favorite TURBO R? Erm... they ain't exactly slow. Appart from the speed - Bentleys are drop dead gorgeous - whereas a Porsche is a bit bland. Ferarris are just fast go-carts!
i am constantly amazed ate how much naked jealousy they cars cause. Thats a good thing and makes me want one even more. Even if it was a complete heap of junk to drive. the envy would worth it. But i was surprised to see that second hand bentley and rolls are quite cheap.
The jealousy and envy thing is absolutely right. Driving a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce is a great way for a person to learn the finer points of sign language! I like your comment though because there is something strangely satisfying about seeing nasty people getting upset! Nice people react in a positive way toward you and your car - so you know who to bother with and who not to! Strange thing is - it's people who have nice cars themselves (BMW's or Mercs etc) who hate you the most!
Nearly bought a Park Ward Bentley. All the interior door panels were finished in bird's eye maple - not just the waist rails. After much consideration, I decided that it looked too much like an old genleman's club and bought a normal Mulsanne instead. I recently drove a new Rolls Royce Phantom - it's actually quite plain inside - all the gadgets are hidden away. This makes the likes of the Mercedes S-Class look quite 'bling' in comparison!

These are REALLY the ultimate cars. They look right, feel right, sound right - even SMELL right. They must even taste OK - but I cannot vouch for that! Why - OH WHY - did we sell out to the Germans. Tell me WHY please!
for european political stability, the french were entrusted to fit out the new queen mary and germany has got the prestige of rolls royce. but british craftsmen are still involved. and im not british or french (god forbid) or german. but competition seems to produce some really brilliant innovation.
I had the same thing myself, I was into fixing up and running cheap old full size american cars for a while (a toddler with a halfords socket set can fix a small block chevy)and they kept aquiring mysterious key scratches. I think its just anything out of the ordinary that attracts the attention of pond life.
The best one I had - was a guy with a big heavy mobile phone standing next to my Bentley in a hotel car park near Manchester Airport blagging away about multi-million pound property deals. He was preteding that the car was his. I think they call them Walter Mitty types. I just shoo shoo'd him off like an Aristo lady would shoo away a pesky hound!
naturally you adopt a defensive position because you own one, but I really wasnt attacking you. I was venturing my own opinion. which of the cars in the film is yours, as none of them is parked outside an ordinary 3 bed semi. dont get me wrong, I'd love to have the mechanical aptitude (say what you want they are pretty complex machines with pricey parts) or the finances to run one- but I'd still be worrying about where I parked it because of the image it posesses
Actually. Fair comment. Mine is the black one - the second and third RR&B pictures - AJC 1. Picture taken in the front garden. They ARE complex but NOT as complex as some more modern cars. Expensive to run? Yes. Parking... I DO worry what I'm going to come back to. Vandalism can be a problem - I once JUST saved the day in Chester - not youths either! Your comments are sensible. Sorry.
I can appreciate the fine engineering and quality, but this isnt the 1950's and I simply find rolls royces too ostentatious, too "in yer face". if cars make a statement these ones say "kneel before me you pauper scum, my car cost more than your house". unless of course its an old silver shad in which case people just think you do wedding hire
I don't believe that "In your face". nonsense at all. I have an uncle with opinions similar to yours, beleieving that all Rolls and Bentley owners are high and mighty. I have a Bentley and I am just an ordinary bloke. Your comment is appreciated but not genuinely valid. I like Bentleys because they are gorgeous!
Quite simply - the finest cars made anywhere in the world. Not sure about the VW-ffication of the brand though. The new Continental GT and Flying Spur feel a bit like any other4 Geman Car. the Arnarge still 'has it' though. The Rolls Royce Phantom is just awesome, oozing Rolls Royceness from the core!
I have to put the mute button on,due to the obnoxious music.
