But you cannot deny that there is a huge 'shared' basket of parts. A Mondero is actually quite a lot more spacious than an X-Type and both look utterly different - so it's clear that the basis had been altered rather than be a bolt-for-bolt set-up.

As I said. Economics rule and sharing common componentry is a must in this day and age. Chrysler and Mercedes were another case-in-point. People positively DO 'pay for the name'...

The Transmission and engine on all RR and Bentleys before they were taken over by VW and BMW came from GM, the suspension was from CItreon, only the body and interior was made by RR. its like driving an old Chevy, talk about a rip off.

All the above is true ...

Even the body shells were made by Rover in Longbridge. They were assembled and 'finished' by hand at Crewe by Rolls Royce Motor Cars,

Lights came from France, EFI from Bosch - the list is endless. Necessity is the mother of invention. Rolls and Bentley obviously never wanted for anything!

The Continental Flying Spur and the GT are VW Phaeton under the skin. A Phaeton is just an overgrown Passatt.

X-Type Jags are Mondeos. It's the way of the world ...

Most EFi systems are from Bosch.

Most OEMs don't make their own auto 'boxes (Merc do but BMW/Jag use ZF, as do many others).

X-Types are NOT Mondeos. This is a popular misconcenption (I was at Jag when X400 was still in the design stage). They started life as sharing the same floorpan in concept but by the time the X-Type went to production so many changes had been required the two floor pans were very different.

I drive an old RR camargue, It's in a really bad shape but it's still not a bad car to drive and you can still feel that I used to be a luxurious car. even when you compare it with some new cars!

The Camargue is quite a rarety.

I think it's a Pininfarina design.

I also believe that the Camargue provided a bit of a benchmark for the Rolls-Royce Silver Spirit/Bentley Mulsanne Turbo's outward appearance. It was the first of the boxy looking Rolls-Royces of the 80's and 90's.

I hope you keep driving the Camargue for many years to come!

The engine is actually a refined version of an American V8 made by Buick. Rolls-Royce always endeavoured to source the finest componentry and refine them to such an extent, that they befitted the marque.

I own Mercedes cars as well as Rolls-Royce & Bentley. Whilst the Mercedes cars are mechanically very good, they pale in comparison to Rolls & Bentley in terms of stature and presence.

Add all the fuel used in all the Rolls Royce and Bentleys world wide and it's a drop in the ocean - because the cars are so exclusive and rare. Tott up the amount of fuel used in Toyotas or Fords (i.e. run of the mill cars) and it is THEY who account for the majority of fuel used.

I have been accused of being lacking in taste by a guy driving a Citroen 2CV - which did a bout 2 miles per gallon (of engine oil). The smoke screen was utilied to hide his embarrassment - presumably?

I still have the Bentley but I have now started buing good Volvos. I have a 24 year old Volvo 740 which is like new and I am really smitten with it.

And Volvos, the older ones in Norway we call them "Traktors", "Horses" or vovv (like barkin dog", -but that is bechause those cars never seemes to stop!! Yes lovely magnolia hide - no coloured piping - it took me a long time to find one exactly like that, i saw an identical one at the motor show in 85 I think when I was a spotty teenager and I told the snooty salesman I would have one of those one day!

Funny how most Bentley owners have the Bentley aspiration from early on in life - and a preconceived idea relating to colour and trim also! I slso remember the snooty salesmen (in Henleys of Chester) where they used to dress like butlers - pin stripes and tails complete with special white gloves which they used to wipe off finger marks. That was in the mid-70's when my Dad used to buy his Silver Shadows!

The answer to that is buy a decent one that's been well looked after. I have avoided Turbo Bentleys (naturally aspirated cars appear to give more by way of reliability). Just wait until you can buy one from someone who has obviously taken a great deal of pride in the car and has owned it just for pure enjoyment. Bentleys appear to be more desireable than Rolls Royce - but the Seraph is a good solid car.

Have you ever driven a Bentley Flying Spur or a Bentley Arnarge T? Or, my favorite TURBO R? Erm... they ain't exactly slow. Appart from the speed - Bentleys are drop dead gorgeous - whereas a Porsche is a bit bland. Ferarris are just fast go-carts!

The jealousy and envy thing is absolutely right. Driving a Bentley or a Rolls-Royce is a great way for a person to learn the finer points of sign language! I like your comment though because there is something strangely satisfying about seeing nasty people getting upset! Nice people react in a positive way toward you and your car - so you know who to bother with and who not to! Strange thing is - it's people who have nice cars themselves (BMW's or Mercs etc) who hate you the most!

Nearly bought a Park Ward Bentley. All the interior door panels were finished in bird's eye maple - not just the waist rails. After much consideration, I decided that it looked too much like an old genleman's club and bought a normal Mulsanne instead. I recently drove a new Rolls Royce Phantom - it's actually quite plain inside - all the gadgets are hidden away. This makes the likes of the Mercedes S-Class look quite 'bling' in comparison!

I had the same thing myself, I was into fixing up and running cheap old full size american cars for a while (a toddler with a halfords socket set can fix a small block chevy)and they kept aquiring mysterious key scratches. Actually. Fair comment. Mine is the black one - the second and third RR&B pictures - AJC 1. Picture taken in the front garden. They ARE complex but NOT as complex as some more modern cars. Quite simply - the finest cars made anywhere in the world. Not sure about the VW-ffication of the brand though. The new Continental GT and Flying Spur feel a bit like any other4 Geman Car. the Arnarge still 'has it' though. The Rolls Royce Phantom is just awesome, oozing Rolls Royceness from the core!
