My dad works on Bofors (No I'm not lying) and he says that bofors did not sell the plans. They created the AA guns and sold them. But they never told them how they did.
Since my knowledge about ww2 is quite big (I´m a huge fan of ww2), I may be wrong at some points as I´ve learned very much in a pretty short time. So don´t hesitate to tell me if you know that I´m wrong at some part. It´s a good way for me to learn more ;).
The Swedish Bofors 40 mm Ivakan m/36 was Developed 1933 during the timeline between ww1 & ww2. Right before the start of ww2, some countries wanted to buy blueprints of it in order to create more of them which was denied ( they where only allowed to buy them fully assembled). This made instead some of the interested countries to make thousands of piratecopies which where used under ww2 (by studying the parts of some dissembled originals). But these where not as effective as the original.
Not quite true. It's true that Bofors initially didn't want to sell the plans, but when war broke out they did it anyway.
The guns all had roughly similar performance, however the British made many improvements that made it easier to mass produce. (The Swedish plans had a lot of File-to-Fit, parts)
At the start of the war, the Dutch had the best ones though that had nothing to do with the gun and everything to do with the Hazemeyer mounting.
@jgtheman84 When has number of mm something to do with rate of fire? Seem you have no idea at all what you are talking about. Are you talking about a specific 30mm gun from that time or what? Give some facts please.
The video shows Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft guns in use in WW2 along the English coast, against the German Luftwaffe. The Swedish gun was very effective in significantly reducing the threat of arial bombing by the Germans. At the time, it was the only semi-automatic anti-aircraft gun in existance, meaning it had the most rapid rate of fire. The 40 mm was considered so important to the defence of England during WW2, that a film was made to motivate production workers to generate more units
The 40MM bofors was the best AA gun during WW2. It could be used against any target expect Heavy bombers, but the axis countrie's lacked this.
The 40MM Bofors alone was responsible for destroying 60% of all japanese planes shot down. This includes other AA guns like the 20MM oerlikon, AND fighter aircrafts that shot down japanese plane's
The Bofors is simply a swedish masterpiece. And lives on in the AC130 and the new CV9040

I can't really say that we "sold" the plans.
