What a shame. Since 1974 when Whitley Bay was put under the new labour controlled North Tyneside, all our council tax has gone to Wallsend and North Shields. Now we are plagued by the council traffic gestapo who deter motorists from bringing their cars into Whitley to shop. All that lost revenue now goes to Sainsbury's and Morrisons etc where parking is free. No wonder the nice shops are closing and charity shops are on the rise.
hi, lived in bermuda for some 16 yrs, i get over around once a year for a week or so, so love to watch the drive, always brings back that warm home feeling....thanks, chris..
how about a one showing the pubs / clubs that used to be ok in Whitley eg Mingles, Mattie's Bar, Filthy McNasty's, the Vic before it was ruined, the Hamilton, does anyone have any photos of these places, the modern bars in Whitley are horrendous and to be avoided
I like w.b. dont think its changed that much over the years apart from sea front run down , cant understand why local authorities allowed it and now spanish city on a bit of graas now and again shame, but for sea air and views, beach and cleanliness, 2nd to noe.
it looks better on here than real life, cos it is a shanty town now, full of second hand shops and takeaways. shields is better than whitley now for shopping etc. the local council and chamber of trade has been asleep for 30 years and never noticed the decline. or could not think of a solution to the decay . and refused to move over and let some new blood with new ideas take over.. it will all end up boarded up and closed .you watch, only cheap drinking dens and kebab shops will be left RIP W/B
@dadswizz well of course the towns gone pair shaped cause nobody shops in it anymore, the only money it makes is by opening cheap night clubs for people who can't afford a night out in newcastle and takeouts, cause the suburbs of whitley bay are now really for the rich people who work in newcastle, they live there and do all there shopping there. I live in Earsdon and i hardly ever go into actual whitley bay always newcastle lol
at 0:18 the shop on the left TG Allans is closed now...i used to buy toys there like yugioh cards and on the other side of the street is woolworths where i bought my beyblades but thats closed aswell...there are no good toy shops left...yes i am a bit old for toys but i still like things like that
hi great video stayed in whitley bay in 2004 atseacrest hotel while working at docco pipe yard now back home in john o groats fond memories and piss ups ??
Thanks for these videos. As a exile of 6 years I loved watching them. Living in Bedfordshire now and still miss the sea after 6 years. The film passing through Monkseaton and Whitley Bay where I grew up, was married and had my childen brought a tear to my eye. Still visit as often as possible about 4 times a year to our families but enjoyed the reminder on film too!
hi. I am pleased you liked the videos, they were made with Whitley Bay exiles in mind. I lived in Croydon, Surrey for many years but it was too crowded for me, and the call of the sea brought me back.
An inspired film. Something that so many exiled people would have wished to see and you've actually done it. Profound gratitude. What made that town so special to grow up in? We all feel the same but don't know why. signed, Tony Brown.
Nice run through the old town. I'm heading over there next month after living away for 18 years (the last 11 in the USA). Brings a tear to the eye.......Thanks
Hi, loved the video. You drove right past the street I used to live on.If you go that way again could you go up Athol Gardens .. I lived at #30 and my brother still lives there. It's after you took a right on the roundabout at foxhunters past the school on the left before the next rounabout .. would really appreciate it and love to see what my old house looks like Thanks again for doing this i really appreciate it

I am pleased you enjoyed it. You have been away a long time, Whitley has changed a bit in 18 years but it is still my favourite place.
