Unrealistic but I suppose you have got to admire his quick thinking. Being as he had about 10 seconds to climb into that fridge and he thought about doing it so quickly. If it was me I would panic so much I would not know what to do!!
And one more thing. Judging from the size of that bomb and the distance from the town... Also, what was the highest yield detonation done in Arizona in the US mainland? 500kt? Not much more than that I know. At that distance, even a 500kt bomb would not have done that much damage to those houses. For a .5Mton bomb damage starts to taper off after about half a mile. If that town were 3 miles away then Indy could've survived by just staying put in the fridge (if he wasn't thrown).
You Americans need to learn about the differences between alpha, beta and gamma radiation. Look how far ahead a little socialised European education has put me.
but anyway, this IS prob unrealistic tho, IF HE wanted to SURVIVE,FRIDGE=best odds.
true even if this DID happen like this, he wouldn't "walk away" without even limping(tho ppl have survived falling from 20000+ ft with broken bones,so what can i say)
standing that close to that mushroom cloud WOULD SCARE ME TO DEATH, i'd STAY IN THE FRIDGE
well, there wasn't any radioactive 'snow" so it's semi-half-ALMOST plausible he wasnt too bad off
Why not? Lots of smaller, less well-put-together things survive nuclear blasts. There have been cars that would still work after nuclear tests were done on them. Electronic devices that still worked too. Test animals that still lived (if you are inside and you dodge all the flying debris, you will probably live, radiation usually only affects you if you are really close to ground zero [for gamma/xray] or if you are outside [for infrared/light/microwave/ultraviolet]) MISCONCEPTIONS! ERRR!
well if u watch the movie he gets brought into a decontamination zone were they get the radiation off of him....... and u dont die instanly from radiation u need to be exposed to it for a wile.
You can die instantly from radiation. In this case they weren't "getting the radiation off him". Radiation is not mass. They were making sure that any radiactive particles were off of his body. Even though, in this situation that is highly unlikely. How would the radioactive particles (as in fission products etc...) get on him? Maybe after he got out of the fridge, but probably not much.
No. Go watch some nuclear test videos. Not only has the radiation emission decreased drastically by that point but the "fireball" is so high in the air that the EM emissions (and particles) lose most of their energy while traveling through the the atmosphere that far.
I laughed so hard at this scene. And not because it was bad. It's that over the top ridiculousness that makes Indiana Jones great. One of my favorite scene.
The T.V. sounds like it's saying "I have a jew, jew! But not a redneck Jew! The 1 that rooooocks!!!!" over and over again. Indiana Jones IS IMPERVIOUS TO GETTING DEEP FRIED IN FRIDGES
No. Alpha radiation would dissipate almost as quickly as the source radiation would. Hardly any "residual radiation" would be left within a few seconds of discontinuation of the original EM "blast". You are thinking of radioactive particles thrown during the blast that can be inhaled. Alpha particles cannot be inhaled as far as I know. That would be like inhaling a proton. It would discontinue being a proton as soon as it touched another particle. Correct me if I'm wrong, please.
"How would the fridge not be thrown by a nuclear blast". Another common misconception is that EVERYTHING is thrown or even affected in a nuclear blast. Not so. Some things will be left just as they were. The likelyhood of the fridge being thrown that far (being that far from the epicenter) is very low in my opinion. Here's a good idea. Disregard everything you think you know about nuclear weapons. Then, do your own research (read a few books, study physics) and then decide.
You are totally right about not everything being destroyed in a nuclear blast. The tower which was used for the Trinity test was thought to have been vaporised by the explosion, but, upon searching, the scientists found that all of the pieces of the tower were still there!! Some had been thrown vast distances, but they were not vaporised.
forget being incinerated
the impact would have killed him nonetheless
that is a very fictional survival scene

Why do the houses have working sprinklers and hoses, but no working sink? Dont they get their water supply from the same source?

I hope the next Indy movie returns to its roots though

don't think that a leadlined fridge would hold up to a nuclear blast.

Alpha radiation in airborne particles would fill the air after the nuclear explosion. When inhaled or ingested, these would rapidly lead to death.
