I marched in the Ragin Cajun drumline in 89-90, but I also marched Howard University's Showtime drumline in 88. I have marched both styles and prefer one a little more than the other. I have learned that creating these types of divisions in music can be be the equivalent of racism. The same mindsets don't allow certain schools to receive money based on the aforementioned. Music is the only universal language. Develop an appreciation, maybe even an affinity, and let the universal language speak.

It's always sad to see the bitterness between show bands and corp style bands.... 2 different types of bands ppl, so it is not fair or right at all to say that one band is poo or garbage because of it's style...if ppl know their band history, majority of ALL college Bands were show bands(high steping, horn swinging, drum major high stepping on field) after they faded away from the military style of precision drilling..

Southern was good for what they do, and so was UL. But I'm sure that if UL were to dumb-it-down for the crowd and only march in diamonds and straight lines, and make our band play the same note over and over and louder instead of playing intricate notes, and make the drumline be satisfied with playing dirty and make everyone not play below fortisimo, and do the exact same show that many hbcu's are doing, and add in dance moves, then we would be tight...right??

I'm one of the instructors for ULL and I'm from up north. This was my first experience seeing that style of marching that southern does. I would have to say that it was very entertaining. But it's like comparing an apple and an orange. As for the sound in the ULL video, I don't believe that the recording does the group justice, and it's very distorted.

But the way people act, whether it be at the game or on here shows ones character, and some of you are showing your true colors.

Interesting to see all of the ULL fans trying to take take the holier than thou route. The 1st note of the show wasn't even together. A tenor brass player is making noises, not music. There are more cracks in the trumpet's sound than in the sidewalk...plus several spots with 16th note or triplet 8th notes that weren't even played!!! Yes, I know this piece. Trumpets...what the hell was that at the 1:40 mark?? This band has SOME talent, but no depth, unlike two of the better college bands in La.

Ok...too bad there is no video for UL's pregame show because though halftime wasnt as clean as it will be later on down the road, pregame was amazing. As soon as they played the opening Respect Fanfare from the tunnel, everyone knew this wasn't the same band. It was loud, exciting, and the other tunes very characteristic of what a band from Louisiana should be playing. I can't wait till the whole Spanish show is on the field, cleaned, and everyone knowing music cause it will blow the crowd away.

I disagree. there were major overblowing in ULL low brass section.  The sets were not together. The color guard was off at times. The trumpet solo was not the best.. You can compare the two because regardless of style a marching band is supposed to entertain the crowd! It was clear that night that one did not! It's not ULL's fault, SU is just on another level. The best corp style band I saw in the state of LA is Northwestern State Univ

FOlk SU did there thing at ULL. JSU laid it down at MSU. They both got respect...so lets respect corps style. but there are ignorant folks on both sides

Sorry you feal that way but I stand by what I said. I clearly made my point that styles were different but SU's execution was better. However when you start throwing in "can't read music" in there, then you are dealing with stereotypes and when you deal in stereotypes you deal in ignorance, and when you deal in ignorance you deal in hate. Honestly bands talk trash rather it's show style or corps style so why is it wrong when you mix the too? It's okay to talk trash, but don't use stereotypes

Whether or not SU could read music aside, how about the lack of any dynamics whatsoever besides fortissimo of course, they got that one down, how about being horribly out of tune/ many times just downright playing wrong notes? How about extremely simple drill? Extremely simple music?

This is a great show band, sure, thats all it is, a show, for simpletons who don't know better, it is far from a musical performance.

As opposed to doing something that is more difficult but doing poorly...such as this video exhibits? I wouldn't exactly call the sounds that some of the trumpets and marching baritones were making musical.
