I watched this when it first came out back in 2006 when I hadn't even watched season 2 and thought it was incredible. Now that I've actually watched most of season 2 I have recognised so many more jokes and references making it 10x better. The amount of thought and effort gone into this is astounding. Truly amazing work.

@Asheth It's actually supposed to be the stone turtle from a 1984 anime called Beautiful Dreamer, but it does double-duty as a Discworld reference. Lost writer Javier Grillo-Marxuach joked early on that the island would turn out to be on the back of a giant turtle.

@frohjizm It's weird how a lot of things I threw in as jokes turned out to show up in the show later. In the first Lost Rhapsody, I had Mr Paik's face show up in the Smoke Monster, and then later in season 2 we actually saw images from Eko's memory flash inside Smokey!

Although the island wasn't REALLY underwater, that's just how it was presented in the "afterlife" timeline. I still maintain that the afterlife part itself is a construct of the island, like a database of memories.

@CapnBob Turns out that Colour of Magic was published in 1983, so by a year's difference the turtle is in fact doing double-duty as a Beautiful Dreamer reference.

@fundude365 True, but both are predated by several mythologies. The turtle image in the first Lost Rhapsody was lifted directly from Beautiful Dreamer (with minor alterations) and I make the turtle in the second video stone as well, so it owes more to that source. But it works either way!

@pappagora Thanks! The effect is that I hand-traced and redrew sections using a stylus in Flash. The fancy term is "rotoscoping." I wish I had a program to do all that for me, it would have been much easier!
