This is a very good pop song and shows the musical influences of that time, such as disco. I love the coda near the end where she really goes high. She can really sing. 1979-80 in Phila Pa... I can really relate!
This song always reminds me of Cape Cod, MA because in the summer of '79 my family and I were vacationing there and I, at 2 1/2, was constantly singing this song in my own phonetic way ;)
Great video. I remember the first time I heard this as an actual song on the radio in the summer of 1979. I loved the late 70's. In '79 I was only 21 and thought I had my whole life in front of me. Now I'm in my 50's with more years behind me then ahead. Good times and a very upbeat song. Plus I thought that Robert Hays was a real hottie! Brings back a lot of great memories of a better time before the 80's and all the crap that has followed.
This song makes me feel soooo happy! I was about 8. It really was a happy time. It's amazing how songs can take you to right where you were when you first heard it. I love it! I listen to it often, LOL
Other than the song We May never Love Like this Again from the Towering Inferno, and the Superman theme, not very firmilier with work of Maureen McGovern, i intend to catch up, this song is Great.
After watching this video, I sighed so long that the wind was knocked out of me! I am 46 years old and was in my early teens when this came out. Man, did I have a crush on Donna Pescow and DebraLee Scott!!! Thanks for letting me relive a special time in my life. Now I've got to go on Facebook and see what my old friends are up to...
@lordarion1 Glad you liked this little trip back to the Swinging 70s. Donna Pescow has continued to act over the years. But sadly, Debralee Scott passed away in 2005. She led a difficult life after her fiance, a Port Authority police officer, was killed at the WTC on 9/11. RIP.
@lordarion1 I'm the same age and I get such a tinge of nostalgia when I see these old shows now. Is it just me or were TV shows just better back then for some reason? Makes me wish I could go back in time and relive that age again. So many things I would love to do over again.
@lordarion1 Right there with ya my brother. Same age and same crushes back then. I still, to this day, can not understand why Angie was cancelled. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE I've ever discussed that show with says the same thing. I have yet to find someone from our age group who knew about the show and didn't like it. One of the great things about the 70's TV shows was their theme songs. I can spend waaaaay too much timne on YT playing and singing along with those great songs.
@coachsteve Those 70s theme songs can echo in your mind's ear foreverrrrrr.....hahaha. On the other hand, not even ONE current tv theme tune comes to mind. My favorite themes were Wonder Woman, Three's Company, Lavern & Shirley, Brady Bunch, Love Boat, S.W.A.T., Happy Days, Roadrunner, Jeffersons, Maude, Flinstones, Bj & the Bear, Baretta, Chips,......
There's something about Charles Fox's music... at least the ones I've heard, that have such a wonderful "lilt" to them that they just sound so happy and musical. I just love the arranging on all his stuff.
Have any of you listened to the ending title track to the movie "Short Circuit 2"? Say what you want about the movie, but Fox's ending credits track is just so wonderful. Sounds a lot like this song here. Same kind of upbeat, swinging musical uplifting "lilt" and strong beat.
And JetMechMa, how about those seamless key changes? The '70's folks used to do this effortlessly, all the more reason this is such a wonderful, happy tune.
I can't say it any better than JetMechMA a few posts ago, but there was something about '70's music that cannot be equaled in any era. What happened to the time when you could flick on the car radio and hear music like this on a regular basis? I'm glad I did high school and college in the '70's, they were beautiful years.
Some of my earliest memories are of my mom watching this show...This theme reminds me of her and makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Rest in peace, mom!
I remember being just a little guy and watching this show with my parents . I took my casette recorder and put it up to the speaker of my parents big old console TV and recorded this song, man if we only had the technology we have today this song would have sounded so much better lol. But I still have that little casette and play it from time for my kids and they just laugh and say Oh Dad lol .. Great TV show, great song and what a great time of my life :) Thanks for the memories .
As much as I identified with Stephanie Mangano (working class girl aspiring for more/greater), I always felt that Donna Pescow's character was the "prettier" choice in Saturday Night Fever and this opening just furthers that idea. And I just love this theme song -- it's so uplifting! Going back to the opening, they sure don't make those openings anymore, do they? And look at Ray Barone's mom playing Angie's mom!
This is just FANTASTIC!!!!! I had the 45(that was a small record with a song on each side for all you youngins) when I was a kid. What a great song. TV shows don't have the theme songs they use to have and I blame advertising taking the time. Its really to bad. Thank you very much for this video. How do I hit auto replay? lol thanks again!!!
@parkerstage : You're partly right but it's not the commercials that have destroyed TV, it's our downward spiralling, politically correct culture that embraces narcissism. Everything has to be dark and somber, nothing's bright and positive anymore. Say what you want about disco music, it was almost always upbeat and happy sounding. Now we have hip-hop and rap which seems to be mostly about destruction and bad attitudes, not to mention an assault on the ears.
1. Everyone looks so innocent here. Tammy Lauren was just a pup. What a perfect choice for Donna Pescow's sister-in-law's girl.
2. Eli4777, you're right. This song is so POSITIVE, not about heartbreak.
3. What we get on TV today so often are the meandering, downbeat acoustic interludes in the middle of shows like "Bones" that, no matter who sings them, all sound the same. Nothing like this anymore.
@ATamandua You're right, TV music has changed dramatically since this was popular. First, TV theme songs are virtually extinct. Second, the songs that do get on TV shows are usually dreary acoustic stuff with some singer moaning in the background of a scene. Songs like this, that make you feel happy and want to sing along, are just not on TV anymore. Too bad.
@OceanKingNY i agree it seems to reflect the larger world in general...alot of the pop culture seems to reflect much of the grimness, fear, doubt and uncertianity of 21st century life...not that those aspects weren't around in the 70's and 80's but not to the degree that its stressed today...back then TV was truly about "escaping" from the world for a little bit and programs reflected that..now it seems everybody wants in your face crime shows and scripted "reality" shows.
@OceanKingNY Back then, TV show theme songs were full fledged songs - most of which received a fair amount of airplay. Adding to what you stated about the "theme songs" of today's shows is that the songs have absolutely nothing to do with the show they're attached to. Psych, HIMYM, Big Bang, and maybe a few others today actually have one and guess what? They're decent songs and are attached to hit shows. Hmm... maybe there's something to that.... ;>)
I loved the show and was sad/mad when they cancelled it and I LOVED the song. I liked that the radio stations in the small town I went to college at played this song all the time. Reminds of that time in my life.
Different Worlds (Theme From Angie) Lyrics Let the time flow; Let the love grow Let the rain shower; Let the rose flower Love it seeks; Love it finds Love it conquers; Love it binds We come to each other from different worlds Drawn to each other by the love inside of us We give to each other our different worlds Long as we can do it Life is gonna breeze right though it
@lou2u Poor Debralee Scott. I wonder if she got one of those blood clots while flying on the plane down to Florida and collapsed from that. So young is right. Sometimes life is too sad to bear.
@JetMechMA I've read that after Debralee's fiance was killed on 9/11, she developed a drinking problem. If she became depressed, she may have simply lost her will to live....
@JetMechMA It's still not known exactly what Debralee died of. She had some sort of seisure, went unconscious and ended up in intensive care, where she woke up a few days later, seemingly with all her brain capacity intact, knowing that something strange had happened and that she was in a hospital. The doctors couldn't find anything really wrong with her, so they sent her home. She went to take a nap and never woke up. Very strange and sad indeed.
The seventies what a time to be around. Music was so great in the sixties and seventies.....two decades that will never be topped....even the simpliest pop song sounds better then 90% of the stuff coming out today.
@outonthetiles Agreed. When you think back, what was so remarkable about the 70s was the wide variety of music that was available: Rock, Acid Rock, Pop, Jazz, Disco, Easy Listening, Bubblegum... and even the beginnings of Punk and Rap. There was something for everyone, and somehow all of those different styles co-existed, sometimes ending up in the Top 40 together. Much more variety than you hear today; now everything seems geared toward "American Idol."
I'll add my thanks to you for this posting. And as perfect as this song seemed for the show, am I the only one who thinks ABC had a way of assigning theme songs to shows that were totally random? In any event, thanks again!
yes ocean it is the 233 eng. is a eng. in brooklyn ny where my friend worked hes retired in fl now have a great nite and a wonderful weekend and keep up the good work and stay in touch daveyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
You have the woman from Saturday Night Fever in love with the guy from Airplane which spoofed Saturday Night Fever. The credits were too much like the Love Boat, which had the guy who sung the theme appear in Airplane II. You also had the girl who played on Welcome Back Kotter and the mother from Everybody loves Raymond. Why didn't this show last longer?
I believe the reason that "Angie" only lasted a season and a half was that for the show's second year, 1979-80, ABC had moved it around the schedule, to try to find the right audience for it in that season.
I agree with what Doris Roberts remarked, that the show should have been a hit.
I still treasure this show, for, to me, Angie and the entire cast of characters were as friends.
This forever put Doris Roberts on the map for me. When she was put on Everybody Loves Raymond, I said, I remember Doris from Angie. And her guest starring role on St. Elsewhere for which she won an Emmy along with James Coco.
Doris Roberts was on the 1980's detective drama "Remington Steele" with Pierece Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist. The latter is the daughter of actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. who played Inspector Lewis Erskine on the cop show "The FBI"
thanks for this great memory. 30 years ago exactly that 'Angie' premiered on Aussie tv and the gorgeous Donna Pescow and handsome Roberrt Hays created magic on screen. Also i have never forgotten the wondrous Doris Roberts from that show. Maureen McGovern creates a perfect pop hit - has been in my head for 30 years. Great singer. If only love could conquer all!
I discovered Ms McGovern one year ago. I would like to add something to what you have written, but I can't. This is the perfect comment.(Message from France.)
I really like Different Worlds because it seems so technically perfect. It just seems like Maureen McGovern and the recording engineers and studio musicians were ALL firing on all cylinders in perfect synchronicity. Everything came together to make a perfect recording. I wish I could be a part of something that perfect. Maureen doesn't just sing the song, she becomes the song. She sings from the heart as if she was the character in the song. In, Can You Read My Mind. she becomes Lois Lane.
@JetMechMA In the studio, they don't usually record everything at once. The secret weapon is a reel-to-reel tape recorder (as big as a washing machine), with usually 24 tracks, whereby they can add individual instruments and parts, fix mistakes with "punch-ins", etc. The "mix" is where they run it through a console and tweak it to perfection. Having said that, for big productions they usually hire the best so I'm not saying they weren't knocking it out of the park. Only they know for sure.
@randommagnum: Having said that, for big productions they usually hire the best so I'm not saying they weren't knocking it out of the park. Only they know for sure.
JM: I see what you're saying then. As a simple listener, I'm just saying that this thing was technically perfect. As you said, they knocked it out of the park. Even still, as each artist added their part, they had to listen to the pre-recorded parts and add theirs ....perfection. (I think)
@JetMechMA Well yes, the mix and the arrangement are fabulous. It's hard to say to what degree the musicians played exactly what they read or what was ad lib based on what they heard (probably a combination throughout) but they are great, and so much credit for it goes to the arranger producer, mix engineer and so on. Course, I may be a little biased because I used to be a recording engineer and I've produced a handful of things as well. :D
@Ultramar0270 yes, i agree... love the way she smiles in this esp when they put her in the circle lol... awesome piece of music and singer in Maureen..
I bought the song on iTunes a few months back...thanks for posting though! LOVE this song. I TOTALLY remember it being the theme song for Donna Pescow's sitcom!
I totally forgot that funny Doris Roberts played the mom! It broke my heart when I learned that Debralee Scott had died. She didn't look like a model. She was uniquely gorgeous in a girl-next-door sort of way. Had a bit of mischief in her too! With Farrah Fawcett's passing, I'm sure the feather-haired girls are having a ball in heaven!
I was 11 in 1979. I have the fondest memories of that year. I was one of those kids who blew his $2 allowance at the record store every wknd. I loved 45s and I TOTALLY had this one!
This song always cheered me up when I was down. I could never get it out of my head. Debralee Scott was my favorite character on this show and loved her in Police Academy as well. I'm sorry for all the tragedy she endured, she always seemed so "happy go lucky". R I P MIss Debralee.
have always loved this song, it;s so moving,so inspirational, in fact ,2 weeks ago while running my 60th marathon i hummed it in my mind the last 15. (i'll always love you greg derringer)
always wondered why this show was axed so soon. I remember liking it and Donna Pescow in it. It was from the same season as Andy Griffith's adventure show "Salvage One" which also lasted from 1979-80
This is my 5th time ive watched the clip. great job! why isn't this on dvd? some of these less known tv shows should be saved on dvd. it all we got. cheers!
thanks for the trivia about the songwriters. I must like their work because I like the theme songs for Wonder Woman, Laverne and shirley and the Love Boat.
Everyone remembers this-even people who barely remembers the show-because of the great vocal! Really a great recording, in spite of the disco track!

The seventies what a time to be around. Music was so great in the sixties and seventies.....two decades that will never be topped....even the simpliest pop song sounds better then 90% of the stuff coming out today.
outonthetiles 1 year ago 6
@outonthetiles Agreed. When you think back, what was so remarkable about the 70s was the wide variety of music that was available: Rock, Acid Rock, Pop, Jazz, Disco, Easy Listening, Bubblegum... and even the beginnings of Punk and Rap. There was something for everyone, and somehow all of those different styles co-existed, sometimes ending up in the Top 40 together. Much more variety than you hear today; now everything seems geared toward "American Idol."

@outonthetiles it would be ice if you write down the lyrics i could sing it too ... i love it

I'll add my thanks to you for this posting. And as perfect as this song seemed for the show, am I the only one who thinks ABC had a way of assigning theme songs to shows that were totally random? In any event, thanks again!

Why didn't this show last longer?
billyblueification 1 year ago 6
I believe the reason that "Angie" only lasted a season and a half was that for the show's second year, 1979-80, ABC had moved it around the schedule, to try to find the right audience for it in that season.
I agree with what Doris Roberts remarked, that the show should have been a hit.
I still treasure this show, for, to me, Angie and the entire cast of characters were as friends.

Always remember Maureen was the singing nun in the original Airplane

@gootenslog You're right! I had forgotten that. So Maureen had another connection to Robert Hays besides "Angie."

This forever put Doris Roberts on the map for me. When she was put on Everybody Loves Raymond, I said, I remember Doris from Angie. And her guest starring role on St. Elsewhere for which she won an Emmy along with James Coco.
ajb1776 2 years ago 3
She was also on Remington Steele
carroll1956 2 years ago 3
Yeah... but I hated her on RS. Thought she ruined the show. Well, the character did... which isn't so much her fault as the writers.
The first season, with that other lady and James Read, that was the absolute best season of RS. IMHO.
warriorrabbit17 1 year ago
Doris Roberts was on the 1980's detective drama "Remington Steele" with Pierece Brosnan and Stephanie Zimbalist. The latter is the daughter of actor Efrem Zimbalist Jr. who played Inspector Lewis Erskine on the cop show "The FBI"
frankd1965 1 year ago
That role from "St. Elsewhere" was remarkable! She absolutely deserved the Emmy!

thanks for this great memory.

JetMechMA 2 years ago 25
@JetMechMA In the studio, they don't usually record everything at once. The secret weapon is a reel-to-reel tape recorder (as big as a washing machine), with usually 24 tracks, whereby they can add individual instruments and parts, fix mistakes with "punch-ins", etc. The "mix" is where they run it through a console and tweak it to perfection. Having said that, for big productions they usually hire the best so I'm not saying they weren't knocking it out of the park. Only they know for sure.
randommagnum 1 year ago
@randommagnum: Having said that, for big productions they usually hire the best so I'm not saying they weren't knocking it out of the park. Only they know for sure.
JM: I see what you're saying then. As a simple listener, I'm just saying that this thing was technically perfect. As you said, they knocked it out of the park. Even still, as each artist added their part, they had to listen to the pre-recorded parts and add theirs ....perfection. (I think)
JetMechMA 1 year ago
@JetMechMA Well yes, the mix and the arrangement are fabulous. It's hard to say to what degree the musicians played exactly what they read or what was ad lib based on what they heard (probably a combination throughout) but they are great, and so much credit for it goes to the arranger producer, mix engineer and so on. Course, I may be a little biased because I used to be a recording engineer and I've produced a handful of things as well. :D

Maureen McGovern rocks. Put everyone on Idol to shame. : ) I'd waych Angie over all the junk they put out now...except Mad Men.
