My father would whistle this on the once-a-year weekend that he'd take me to Big Bend National Park. My favorite of the Irish Rovers. Saw them once in Houston and half of the audience were clergy. Gotta love it.
I love this song they are amazing artists and I hope they never truely stop making music their music is a legend and I am happy to say I go to a concert for them every year!
Oh how I do love this song, since I first heard this version back in the day. It became my favorite song from their album and through all the years I still remember all the words... so beautiful and sad.
When I was little, I would beg my grandma to put this record on. We wore out at least ten copies, and probably just as many tapes. The entire album is incredible, but this song, wow...
As it ends, the silence after the song finally cuts out just seems deafening, like you didn't realize how much you were feeling it, until it's over. For me, anyway...
Scots-Irish-Native American ancestry here, it's amazing how many of my friends start out thinking this music is stupid, and end up loving it.
This song's always spoken to me. I'm down from the Scots, not the Irish, but the story's the same. My ancestors' love was murdered by redskins, in the Ohio valley, in the days before the gold rush. I'm proud to say that he more than evened the score.Never fuck with a Celt! We don't forget!
many songs were on the original Irish Rovers 1st released Album, in North America, but , some were requested to be removed .... Kevin Berry among them , I only know this from an old family friend ... This also was removed , but we can hear them here ;))
thanx for sharing this i remember my dad had the unicorn LP in the late 60's70. many a good party got started off on that ,and other irish music in melbourne /australia but this is one of my favourite all time irish songs
Now I know why I have such a love for harmonies. I am of Irish descent, and grew up singing, now singing in a Christian band, and totally bossy when it comes to making the harmonies happen. Cool...thanks for the good memories of a weekly show my parents loved.
My grandfather was a full-blooded Irishman and very proud of his heritage. I grew up listening to these wonderful harmonies and story-songs of the Irish Rovers. This song has always made me so sad... Even some of their more upbeat tempo songs were about the struggles of indentured servitude and black luck.
(Once upon a time, I had The Unicorn, the album, on tape, but lost it. This past year, I acquired the out of print CD version on Ebay for about $30. It is worth every single penny.)
Holy god same story for me, My father and grand dad listened to this song and one day i listened to it alone and just was so sad at the words.
I still cry a tear for it I am a big baby girl i guess. It is odd to tell some americans that you are Irish American but it is how i was raised proud of my blood. I truely love this song.
I still have my record of this song.
Your little comment made me smile and best of Irish love to you.
when i was a kiddie my mom and her best friend, both gossipers, loved to play the irish rovers. i grew into their music and love to hear the irish rovers to this day, and the Wind That Shakes The Corn is about the saddest song i have ever heard from them. Of course, other groups sing it in recognisian of the era of North Ireland that this song sings about, but, hell....it is terribly sad. Thanks to mom and her friend Doris Rudrum, and to sorry to the sad times that made this song real.
My roots are from Ireland, i heard this song as a child, and i always loved it..I am only 41, and i know it was probably before my time..but still an Irish Classic song..
Love this song. I have tried to download it off iTunes but no luck. My dad bought "The Unicorn" album back in the late 60's early 70's when it came out. Don't have a turntable to play it on so I'm glad to have it here. Thanks
