Anthony Hopkins face at 1:40 with the tear rolling down his cheek. Amazing. His performance in this IMHO is infinitely greater than Hannibal Lechter because of all the little subtleties and nuances.

Treves was a character who found humanity in what he considered, at first, to be idiotic and subhuman (using "it" instead of "he"). Hannibal was a psychotic, and quietly sexual, deviant who acted upon horrid desires and needs. Both films are fantastic.

Bytes had Treves figured out from the beginning, even enough to feel some kind of weird kinship with him. He is just Treves in a dark mirror, which us why Treves is such a good film character. Even after his "Am I a good man or a bad man?" speech, you are not really sure.
