Carl Smith akaCARLSMITTYSMOOTH (surviving original member) Thanks to everyone who expressed interest in the CHOCOLATE SYRUP more info contact me at Smooth348@Yahoo.com GOD BLESS the lives of Lenny, Jimmy and Norris.
@thecarlsmittysmooth Thank you so much for commenting on this! This song took a life of its own on here and I am glad you replied! What part of the group were you (music / singing)?
@izakteaz When Avco Embassy Records signed CHOCOLATE SYRUP the lead on "Stop Your Crying", was Frankie Avery. When we performed at the Apollo Theatre, the Brooklyn Fox Theatre, the Proctor in N.J etc....I sang lead. I'm the first tenor. L.J.Reynolds and I could be heard on "What's the Matter Baby". Thank You for your interest. I'm looking for a co-author to help with writing the early history of R&B and the begining of Disco. Contact me for further info..............Carl Smith
Here's the real 411 on Chocolate Syrup..Use to be called "Chain Reaction" from the Bronx NY. LJ was brought in after this recording by lable owner: Clarence Lawton for 2nd record: Let One Hurt Do..Only 2 members R alive 2 day; Carl Smith (up N Boston)and Mitch Brathwaite (N Brooklyn)"Stop Your Cryin is still being played on the radio; WBGO 88.3 NJ..That's when music had meaning..
Thanks for the info! I have both the IRA and Avco pressings of Stop Your Crying and I LOVE this record! And yes - Felix Hernandez does spin this tune on the Rhythm Revue show on WBGO-FM quite a bit.
With that "distinct" voice how could I possible mess that name up? He's coming to the Atl, Feb 7th,2009 (the 70's jam) and you better know that I got my ticket!!!!!!!!!
Growing up in Queens, NY, I was a little kid but I most definetely remember the cut. I remembering hearing it played on WWRL.
It just dawned on me just a few years ago, that it was RL Reynolds voice who led Chocolate Syrup. I got a chance to meet him in the ATL. at the Fox Theater. He was the nicest guy! A real person.
@mitkar77 I sure would like to touch base with Mitch Brathwaite. Mitch was my next door neighbor and mentor when we lived uptown in the Bronx on Decatur Ave. He had just left Chocolate Syrup and formed group called " Love Foundation". I believe Carl Smith was first the tenor. And yes the music did have meaning then and they were extremely talented. It was about lyrics and content back then. Mitch was a big part of why I became a musician. Can someone pass this on to him? I'd appreciate it.
you guys need to hear the group brown's bag. Not on youtube yet. but they are a new band with a "dramatics" sound. Very popular in europe. from chicago.
this group hailed from new york and lj reynolds sung in this group as well he's the lead singer of the dramatics and billy holiday had a newphew in this group also this song made it to number 30 on the charts in 1971
