Luma ('light') is using light as your separation overlay... Thus anything that is unlit should be removed from the composite... In practice it's cheap, ok for light emitting fx such as explosions and model shots for scifi but otherwise very messy.
Chroma uses colour (such as green and blue although any colour can in theory be used) as your separation median, often requires a more professional setup/more money, and not always practicable, but does on the whole look better.
Luma key is the removal of black and white - make it transparent
Chroma key is the removal of a specific colour
