I've trained enough kids to know how they talk, think and act. If you are an adult and still carrying around this kind of attitude then...phew! You have some issues. As I said (and I'm not going to repeat myself again), in our dojo we have kids of all color belts breaking 12" boards. We do it for tests. We do it for fun. It's no big thing. Clearly breaking a board with the grain isn't the same as breaking against the grain, which is pretty darn near impossible. Regardless of that, it still takes power and skill to break through multiple boards (or bricks). You can't just take any guy off the street and get him to break through 3 or 4 1" pine boards.

If you hit a 2x4 hard enough to break it, it'll rip (as opposed to breaking evenly) and you'll get all kinds of splinters in your hand. Not that anybody has to worry about that, since you can hit a 2x4 with a sledgehammer without breaking it.

I do agree about the false sense of security thing though, breaking 4 boards with spacers isn't any harder than just breaking 1 or 2 boards without.
