its a great scent for summer and spring. Quite simple, yet somehow unique cause of that oceanica poseidonica plant aroma. Direct rival to Acqua di Gio (Armani).
well, it is all matter of opinion and taste. Both these scents belongs to same olfactive group (Aquatic Aromatic), and have both sharp and light notes. But, the truth is you will smell more unique if you wear BVLGARI, because Acqua is just too popular, and almost every teenager wears it, so it became very common and kind of dull. After all, Gio (1998) is way older than BVL(2006).
do you work in the perfumery? bcoz you seems to knows the science behind the scent...
I have tried Acqua di Gio and it's one of my favorites. I also like Cool Water by Davidoff and Polo Sport by RL but of all that I tried I think I prefer Escape by CK.
well, I work with parfumes, but not in the parfumery. Beside that, I am big enthusiast when it comes to parfumes and tend to be a collector one day. Now, all these scents you named are true classics (especially Cool Water, wich was the milestone for so many aquatic parfumes). And Escape- well its the best Ck scent for sure (CK had a bad habbit to make many of their scents smell synthetic and too artificial, but not this one), it is very complex, and drydown is great...
...introducing woodsy notes in the middle and bottom notes (cypress, birch, fir, sandalwood, vetiver, amber). Great choice for sure... Since I see each parfume you mentioned had citrusy or "green" opening (either lemon, grapefruit, mandarine, or green tea),may I recommend EAU SAUVAGE (father of all citrus grouped scents). Or, if you like something modern, try the brand new Givenchy Play white (just 4 notes - bitter orange, pepper, patchouli, and grapefruit; but smells great).
Wow! you work with parfumes that'a great. I wanna work with parfumes too. Where did you work? I've heard France produces the best perfumes aside from wines and some jewelry.
This is the deal with my work with parfumes: My friends owns a big parfumery. He imports all the big brands and his selection is huge. Now, when he makes an order he gets a free 100ml tester bottle (it comes in plain cardboard box, and it is not for retail-sale) on every 4th bottle he buys. This tester is what you spray on in a parfumery when you want to try out scent you like; so it smells completely same (or even stronger) than a regular parfume. We sell these testers, and split profit.
And yeah, French parfumes are the best. They have the longest tradition of making it, although some say they stole the secrets and technology of producing parfume oils from Arabs. But French succeded in commercializing it and making it worldwide popular. The word parfume itself comes from French language.
I think the French word is 'parfum' - perfume being the English derivative.
Well, you definitely seem like the sort of person who would never confuse 'eau de parfum' and 'eau de toilette'. Where is your friend's Perfumery based?
It's pretty rare to hear someone with a knowledge of perfumes who also think Aquatic perfumes deserve the name. Most enthusiasts find them artificial, overrated and overused by those who can't appreciate a well-balanced, complex scent.
I do agree with you, my friend. So many of these "aquatic scents" smells just plain dull - unfair sillage, no drydown at all. Many of scents that belong to this olfactive group dont have the complexity of notes (no top, middle or bottom notes). It is quite unfair that this particular scent has the same price tag as e.g. GUCCI Pour Homme. But, it is the market which makes this rules, not the experts and enthusiasts. And this is why:...
These kind of scents have icredibly high rate of demand, since they can be worn almost by anyone. When some clueless kid wants to buy EDT for the first time in his life, he will certainly go for Acqua di Gio or something like that, 'cause he heard it is good and it is worn by many so he thinks he cant go wrong with that one. He doesnt know in which occasions to wear it, so he uses it anywhere, anytime. More often than not, these habbits last for long, and so many young men uses aquatic scents...
neglecting the fact that these fragrances are meant to be used mainly in summer, on sunny days... They dont mind that it can not be felt in winter or fall, when there is no sweat to catalize the aroma of the fragrance- which is more to it, the lack of fragrance's strength they're trying to make up by quantity- so they run out of their favorite scent very quickly . At first I tried to pursuade someone who wants to buy aquatic scent when out of season not to do so, but I've given up now.
But to be honest - Aquatic scents arent bad at all. They are meant to be simple. The key is proper usage, of course. These scents are great when going on vacations, seaside especially, during the day, some of them in the evening too. Big brands go for making this "simple" scents 'cause it is cheaper for them to develop perfume that has 4 - 5 notes in it, than to make some complex scent (also there is a problem with note matching when it comes to complex summer scents - remember KOUROS?)
You are right about that - I can appreciate a good zesty aquatic scent on the right day - balmy, lots of action yet not much important to do - I even liked Aqua by Davidoff at some point. That was, of course, before I knew the word 'sillage' - I barely knew what a note was. It is ridiculous, isn't it, the price tags on some of these sea-scents! Acqua di Gio I find the most dull of all - I've since learned to prefer much deeper scents, oriental-vanillas - Shalimar is my favorite.
Well, I think it is just unfair to any perfume to be compared to Shalimar because it is for me the best composed perfume to date and I think it will be a long time someone creates something better. Made in 1925 and still modern and one of the scents that sells the most all around the world. When you say Shalimar I think of a true lady.
I know, I'm continually amazed at all the compliments I get from it - but no one ever says "You're wearing - Shalimar right?" Because it's such a timeless, yet elusive scent - and you can't really pull it off unless you feel confident. If you wear something typical and boring like Angel by Thierry Mugler and Light Blue by D&G - everyone tells right away. Cause everyone uses them. What do you think about gourmand perfumes? They're so often sickly and overpowering, headache-inducing!
The reason why gourmand perfumes are often considered overpowering and overwhelming in general is that it is hard to match gourmand notes to work with each other. Particular scent you mentioned- Angel by TM(typical gourmand) is a pretty well balanced, but there are many complaints about it - on so many girls I meet it smells like burned sugar. The reason is - too much sweet and strong notes - honey, caramel, vanilla, coumarine, and which is more not a proper combination of these same notes.
I, personally, dont like wearing scents in which sweet notes predominates - mostly because I find it too feminine for me, but also because I like to seek for the uniqueness in fragrance, and it is very hard to find it in gourmand scent when you apply it cause strong and sweet notes would quickly overpower any unique note that particular scent has (more often than not users of those perfumes are left dissapointed, because what they felt in bottle is not what they feel on their skin)
Exactly-Angel TM was horrible on me, but I wasn't expecting much from it anyway. Even though I sort of like the idea of smelling all gourmet - it just doesn't seem to work very well for most of the perfumes.
It's funny, isn't it, how many people wear frags just because everyone says they're brilliant - even if it doesn't work in synergy with their own body. There's one I really love and want to get - Coco Mademoiselle - but since so, so many girls wear it I don't want to join the bandwagon.
Synergy? Something almost forgotten nowadays. I cant remember when was the last time someone came to me and said : "I want this fragrance because it suits me and I recognize myself when I wear it". What do you think, what is the purpose of this good looking man in this commercial? Or why is Paco Rabanne's latest fragrance for men called One Million (a scent with nothing new and original in it)? Just a marketing trick, or a bait, for someone who doesnt know what he wants, except for the fact...
... that he wants a body like the man in the commercial has, and to be the millionare. Then there is the irrational factor for choosing some scent - celeb scent just like you mentioned is the perfect example. Or, when someone buys a new scent just because it comes from the house that once made perfume that he/she liked. Yes, so many ppl have become victims of todays marketing- not only when it comes to perfumes of course.
@StrangerToEarth And yeah about Coco Mademoiselle- this is a good scent but be careful what do you want from it, and when do you want to wear it. Because, there are Parfum, EDP and EDT concentration of this scent and every single one is story for itself. Not only because of the strength, but because of the composition of the notes. And if I may suggest and since I see you like chypre and unique fragrance, to try YSL Yvresse.
I was so disappointed too, when I tried Chanel No 5 - and it just didn't work for me at all, the aldehydes were all I could get. That's another fragrance that everyone wears, not caring if it suits them. I'm always looking for something that connects with my chemistry AND is unique, and it's proving a hard hard search.
But what's even more hilarious - when people wear celeb frags, thinking that some of the person's mojo will rub off on them - 'I want to smell like Paris hilton!'
