DJs, take note: Everybody's talking about how Larry Levan was a genuine, cool person... David Mancuso's using his camera time to talk about the importance of equality and ending economic discrimination... It doesn't start with records, or a system... It's starts with you, as a person.
Spent many a wee hour at the Loft. The atmosphere of the Loft was interconnected but so different from the Garage. I still listen to those extended cuts like Macho City, 212 North and E2E4. My friends are always asking what is that playing in the background? You truly did have to live it to fully get it.
When I ride downtown next time I'm going to try and find where 99 Prince St. is. I went to so many clubs but Paradise was just that. What was the name of the club on the corner or Houston and Green (?), Thanks for the info.
@bteiv676 99 prince was the lofts 2nd incarnation i think. garage started in the late 70's (really the 80's culturally), loft started in the early 70's.
@bacanito Back on those days.. its was not about money..the vibe was diffrent .. it was music and being with friends... and having a blast....a era that will never return

this documentary is ruined by the background music. why use predominantly crap funky-house music? play stuff from the time, things the dj's actually played, something relevant to the story. if they couldn't afford the rights to the songs, just get a few and be sparing. i had to stop watching at this part as i was driven mad by what sound like crap apple loops. sorry if you like early 90s funky-house
dude what do you know about early dj culture, damn, i'm not annoyed by this background music, altough a lil bit of levans creations under it would have been nice :)
i know that the 70s went before the 90s therefore music from the 70s is more applicable to that decade than music recorded two decades after. at least we agree that levans is very good
ok so i got a response to my question on diffrent djs at the GARAGE,but still,if anybody knows, how is it that TONY HUMPHRIES never got a night OR now that im thinking about it LARRY PATTERSON. Again,ANYBODY??????????
i wish this energy was still felt when you go out today.... im so happy i caught the tail end of what the nyc club scene was really about..... Family!
if anybody knows, how is it TONY HUMPRIES never played at the PARADISE GARAGE?At least once or twice!!!LARRY came to ZANZIBAR when GARAGE closed.i hear that LARRY played ZANZ back in the day on WEDSDAYS. ANYBODY???
The Loft was before my time but I'd hear about it! The Garage however! I did her for years and years and loved every single second of it! It changed my life! And will live in me forever! R.I.P Larry!
Yes... but this documentary in specific is all about the New York scene and the Paradise garage. I don't know if that's what you're asking about or not.
LOL - You know now that you mention it, I had it in my mind all these years that The Gallery came before The Loft, but I guess it would make sense that The Loft was first because Nicky learned there.
the reply may be very late but I'm soo tired of hearing about how House music originated in Chicago. Frankie Knuckles will admit it (and has admitted it on video) that house originated in NYC at the Loft with David Mancuso , who mentored Larry Levan, I know ! I lived it . I was there. I know Dave personally. The Loft was my home. I had membership at both the Loft and the Garage back in the day.( late 70's early 80's) You can never duplicate the experience.
@WaathaaFuck I agree in the piont about what you say "loft was first" but somehow I cannot agree that loft was the first "house"club. The guy I call the "godfather" was Ron Hardy, who made the Disco tracks more bumpy with hsi crazy reel-to-reel manipulation. That was the first time when disco was not called disco anymore, because it was too dark and powerfull. Of course it's not easy to say who was first DJ who transformed disco into house with his sick 72 hours live sets. ..but I donno 4 sure^^
@Smokeg1016 - there is a music genre called "loft classics" not "loft music", also there is a music called "garage" but not "garage music". Frankie Knuckles is from new york, he went to both the gallery and the loft. He then took that music which had no name to chicago where that music which had no name became known as wherehouse music, and ultimately just house music. the 1st to name it doesn't mean they are the first to make it they are just the 1st to popularize it.
Im from ireland only 22 and love my house music the US 80's sound started it all off dance music owes it to paradise garage and its legends for creating the revolution the 1988 2nd summer of love here in the uk, House will live for ever, Respect.
