Remember the windspeeds that they talk about are just the recorded gusts, I'm sure winds where stronger at times where they wern't recorded, especially out at sea. The strongest recorded gust that I know of was 126mph somewhere in Kent, although apparently a gust was recorded at 140mph in Calais in northern France but this is unofficial and never confirmed!
Shoreham Coastguard station recorded a wind speed of 120mph. That was because their eqipment was only calibrated to a maximum of 120mph. Fisherman and Lifeboat Hon. Sec. Jim Partridge clocked 129 mph at the Monteum Wharf in Shoreham By Sea, West Sussex.
I wasn't even born when this happened but I'm interested in extreme weather thought I'd check this out. That car at 1:50 oops! Scary to be in that car! Still could have been worse, could have been in that block of flats with the roof ripped off...I remember laughing when I was about 10 hearing that Michael Fish had said "absolutely no chance of a hurricane" then this happened! Still, even the best get it wrong sometimes.
I was 17 and working as a roof tiler. 2 days after I was on top of The Heart and Garter hotel in windsor replacing a slate roof. A poor American woman was killed in the room below and the bed clothes were soaked with blood (and covered in bricks from a collapsed chimney). Will always remember that.
Was 15 at the time, living in Norfolk. Even now you can still see little remants of the damage it caused. Remember having the day off school - it was a really surreal day.
Yes i remember it.I was 12 at the time, living in west London.Kept me up most of the night listening to the whistling winds. When i did my paper-round that Friday morning, one road i went down, used to be tree lined.Out of the 15 or so trees down it,10 were blown down, crushing walls, cars and a porchway. And the scafffolding from a block of flats was blown down.
the news reader reminds me of percy from green mile......poor people in the storm
