OMG haha that pride & prejudice one- i never really noticed! but now that you point it out, it does seem sort of OOC for both of them! aw, larry & greer :)
I don't think that was an Olivier "flaw"/"mistake" t'all! These brilliant English stars were STAGE actors all the way, with the camera simply happening to be there to capture every moment...every wonderful, glorious moment. He and Greer were so bewitchingly-natural most movie-goers from today aren't used to that. We're used to American idol and casting our "vote" on every cotton-pickin' error. Great job, Sir Olivier! And if it was error, beautiful error!
Thank you. (I studied classical theatre in England.) Funny compilation you've put together here. These actors knew their craft: serious scenes were heart-ripping, and their comedy was...well, the same...
The other day I was watching Roxie Hart and there was a spot in the trial scene when Ginger Rogers faints and she hits her head. I was just thinking that maybe she was supposed to hit the floor and not the wall lol
I think the thing in the afore-mentioned Philly Story scene is that Cary didn't know Jimmy was going to pretend to have the hiccups and you can see him start to crack up a bit. He looks down to cover it, but it's still noticeable if you look carefully. It works in the scene though because you could imagine having a serious conversation with a drunk person and trying to suppress your laughter in order to get to the point they were trying to make.
The "It's a Wonderful Life" actually was a mistake, from what I've read. Some crew member knocked over some equipment off stage and the actor playing the uncle covered for it beautifully.
As for the Kane clip, I would think he actually planned that one. Orson was cool like that. :)
according to the dvd commentary for ck joseph cotten had just put in a ridiculously long day when they filmed that scene so he flubbed unintentionally. but orson really liked the spontaneity of it and decided to keep it in the final product. because he was cool like that. :)
Haha, these are great! About the first scene with Irene Dunne: When they were rehearsing the "dance", she really couldn't do a move called the Bump (where you push your hips kind of forward, I guess). She addlibed it in the script herself. The Awful Truth was almost entirely addlibed.
They're all really great, but my favourite is probably the one from It's A Wonderful Life.
I think there was a scene in The Philadelphia Story where Cary Grant and James Stewart (whose character is drunk) are talking and Jimmy unintentionally breaks out in hiccups, yet they continue with the scene.
Jimmy Stewart can't stop laughing !!

Ah, awesome. "Dramatic crimitism." I love how Orson openly laughs at him. Very cool "blooper reel."

I agree with you 100 %. Those were actors acting. Nowadays they are just famous people in front of the camera plus some special effects.
