@apotheosis00 There hasn't been a declaration of independence - the dominant party in Taiwan is still the formerly dictatorial KMT, which wants eventual unification (ideally under their banner). The opposition party, the DPP, wants eventual independence but wouldn't declare it for the sake of peace. Most people in Taiwan are happy with officially being the ROC but being de facto independent. As such, only old mainlanders in Taiwan support Lien Chan's 'unification soon' program.
