@TheJaniMausi Thanks for your comment, and I wish you success in learning the piece. My performance is not totally immaculate, but the main thing is to go for the overall effect. You need to focus on arm and wrist movements as well as fingerings.
just started learning how to play this... just googled the meaning of "presco con fuoco" i knew presco con meant "fast with" so apparently it is fast with fury or something like that... this will be fun to play once i figure out how to play it that fast :)
@SqeeziePinkerton Thank you for that - and good luck with your study of the piece. With a work like this, it is getting the overall mood and feeling that is more important than getting every last note spot on and in strict time!
@PSearPianist Really? That's interesting.. perhaps they're in hiding. Anyways, there was no free sheet music for it that I could find. Disappointing. :-(
Thank you! My friend played this, and I've wanted to (we're both thirteen, but she's played two years longer than me). She told me the name of this piece, but I forgot the composer X( I found it, finally! Thank you. :)
@LurellePiano Thanks for that. It is strange that this piece seems to be played exclusively in the USA. In UK where I am, no-one plays it, or any of the other studies.
man that was awesome!!! im currently learning this and its pretty fast and technically challenging. guess this is what it should of sound like. thank you for the videos, it helped.
@W3OWNS Thank you. My performance is not immaculate, but it's great if it helps you get an idea of how the piece goes. I wish you luck with your study of the piece!
ahhh you're like my new idol xD i have to play this for festivals in feburary...maybe listening to this a couple hundred times will help :D its fantastic ^^ haha thank you sooo much~~~ ^^
@hampsterbb Thank you! My performance is not immaculate, but I have tried to show the spirit of the piece as I see it. Do look at other performances as well if you can - and good luck with your festivals!
Yay!! Bravo!! I actually just got done playing this (not as well, of course) and i really just wanted to know how it sounds when someone else plays it. SO helpful. Thank you and you're a wonderful player!!!
Thank you. I hope you found the video useful. A lot of the technical features of the piece are really effects, and one always has to look at the bigger picture when playing it, and not get too bogged down in detail.
Thanks for your comment. My performance is not perfect, but I hope I convey the overall effect of the piece. With music like this one has to avoid getting bogged down in the individual notes and look for the bigger picture - what are you trying to project etc. If you can, play some of MacDowell's other music so that you can see this piece in context.
Thank you for your comments and information. The world seems to have largely forgotten that this year is the centenary of MacDowell' death. I am not aware of a single commemorative concert in the UK!
Edward Macdowell was one of the Boston Classicists .He was an american composer that wrote great classical music. His dates are 1860-1908. He taught at Darmstadt Germany from 1879-1880. In 1896 he was a professor of music at Columbia University. He wrote "Woodland Sketches,Indian Suite. His music was the most performed out of all of the Boston Classicists.
Thanks for your kind comment. All the studies are pretty short - the only long one he wrote was an isolated early concert study with its own opus number. This piece seems to be quite popular in the US, but is rarely played here in the UK.
Here in Italy they are literally unknown, or rarely played...I think I'm one the few Italian persons who know some MacDowell music :-) Yet I love it indeed ! Do you think you'll perform on Youtube other pieces like these ones? What about the Concerto Etude op. 36? Do you like it?
I do know the Op. 36 study, and have the score. Alas, I can't memorise anything much, and I, am not sure I could manage the page turns. It is perhaps a bit 'large scale' for me to put on YouTube.
It's so funny that you also have Hungarian on here, because this is the other song that I am playing for piano festival!
WOW! I could never even hope to play it as fast as you do...and it is astonishing to get to see someone play it so quickly and still hit all of the right notes! Amazing!
I'm sure it is not absolutely perfect, but it is the effect that counts with this piece. I have played piano for 45 years - so I have had time to learn a lot of music!
hey..... i know your much more experienced then myself, however i don't think the ruboto was exactly what macdowell intended.... also just a question.... why exactally did your hands fly up on the ups.... all that motion is taking away from your speed on this very fast piece (presto con feuoco) i mean i took it at about 175 i think.... anyway
I get to play this soon and I am SO excited! I'm going to be 15 when I start it. I'm a little bit scared, but that's ok! I just can't wait! I'm playing Tarantella by Piezconika right now. I think it's good prep. for this. Your playing was excellent and I loved your interpretation.
Hi! I've got to do this piece for Solo and Ensemble this March and after seeing you play it, I'm sort of scared. I'm fourteen and...well, terrified now.
Excellent piano-playing though! I enjoyed the piece when I got past the dread and horror of me actually playing it! :D
I think it needs them to get the Hungarian feel as much as possible. It is a good piece to work on, and like most of the MacDowell studies has the virtue of being concise, and not too physically taxing.
I'm learning this but I cant play the scale at 39:00 :(
My fingers are not together there...
I wish I could play as good as you....
(sorry for my bad english, I,m german)

What happened to the pedal!
It was a good performance nonetheless!

Thank you - I hope I do not sound like a robot. The sound quality is not wonderful on this video, and I have changed equipment since i made it.

Very impressive! I like McDowell's etudes and I've played some of them. But this one is too difficult for me I think:) Bravissimo!

I am working on this one... whenever you're just learning it the notes seem weird, so now here's a confirmation that it will sound good in the end.
Thanks! You are talented.

PSearPianist 3 years ago
Not too bad, but a study is meant to be played with surpassing brilliance.
By the highest atandards I would give this 7/10.
The sound quality is unfortuntely rather metallic.

what does presto con feuoco mean?
you said it was fast...darn it, i thought it was slow and easy! oh well, i'm good at fast pieces. i suck at slow pieces.
also, the flying up motion was what good pianists do. personally, i don't like it, but i think it looks professional.
