I remember it well Karla, we listened to it in the Lincoln Way Choir room all the time. I went to the benefit concert you did for the us in '82 after the album release and spent quite a bit of time with Matt during the '82-'83 school year when he was helping film the video yearbook. You should have made a lot more albums.
What a voice! Karla can belt out any song and grab your full attention. I've been listening to this album on a regular basis on these years later, ever since it was first released on that grand vinyl LP. I wish there was a recording available of the song she did for the Budweiser commercial, it relates to the "Cool World" song quite a bit! Thanks Karla for alllllll the great songs!
Karla, I hope you do get a chance to read this. How is your family and in particular your Mom. I really liked her. Thanks for the little time we had. You can tell Robby what a lucky guy he is and that he should cherise you. You were never a French barmaid. Kevin D
I used to see/hear her with (Orchestra) Luna in the Boston area! Loved her rendition of "Teenage Punk" and she had a couple of KILLER ballads that PHYSICALLY gave the CHILLS! That happens very, very seldom for me!
Historically speaking our high school males voted her top female hottie in 82' beating out Pat Benatar, Debbie Harry, the chick from the Motels, Bow Wow Wow and even the hottie from the Divinyls (to name but a few).
ps-what is a "top hot" and what exactly does it have to do with looks.
Soon as I saw this video a couple of years ago, I went straight out (well, online) and bought the album. Cost a bit but it was really worth it. Love all the songs on it.
Wouldn't have even known about it had it not been for the Breakfast Club, and enjoying the song in that.
This song just keeps getting better the more I hear it.
Hi Karla....I met you in Canada when you and Robbie were filming Runnng Brave. I played young Billy. I must have played this song a 1000 times, twenty years later I still remember EVERY word. Hope you and your family are doing well.....Kendall
Thanks again for posting my IS THIS A COOL WORLD OR WHAT?! video!!! I shot this in London in the fall of 1981 at the same time I was doing several screen tests for the lead in EVITA when Director Ken Russell was set to helm the musical film (he left the project and it didn't get a green light for years). I went straight from this video set to Pinewood Studios wearing the same black 1940's dress i was wearing by the window. (Russell kindly mentions me in his biography ALTERED STATES).
Too bad this Evita project with Ken Russel and you never materialized! In 1989 Jim Steinman had his "It's All Coming Back To Me Now" video directed by that same Ken Russel at the wonderful Kensal Green Cemetery where so many obscure celebrities from Victorian times can be found...
I guess you know the Photoshoot of Steven Meisel, who took your music to make one of his best shots in the 80ies..... you can also check it on youtube.... it´s fantastic. We watched it during a lesson in our Design-University in /Germany. - The crowd was blown away while hearing this music.

@KarlaDeVito OMG I fell in love with you when I was like 5 years old, seeining you perform with Meatloaf in that Paradise video.
Sadly I'm married now and thirty eight. But thanks for being so bloody awesome back then, and I'm certain your just as awesome now. I've been getting back into Meatloaf recently and I always will remember your performances with Meatloaf on stage.
Unfortunately the CD release of the album in 1996 is currently going for 100 bucks and up ... unless someone re-issues it again, I certainly can't afford it! *sigh*
Karla did an interesting variation of this song for a Budweiser commercial on TV, and the visuals for it were probably inspired by here Bloody Bess song. This album, Cool World, is still one of my all-time faves! Sure wish it would have been released on CD!
I remember that commercial! But I thought the concept was based on her being Linda Ronstandt's replacement in "The Pirates of Penzance"; wasn't Rex Smith and Kevin Kline also in the commercial? Wish someone could upload it.
This sucks, plain and simple.

Most males didn't know who she was. Not a household name.

most males who watched mtv at the time in the 15-18 year old age range couldn't help but notice her

She didn't have a top hot and she was overshadowed by many other female singers. You can't revise history.

nice and creepy with the dim lighting.
i guess they either shot this on beta or film perhaps.
