  • I had that same bike. It was dead mint, but the pipes rotted out. I sold the bike with 3k for $1200.

  • i love thees bikes i owend one it came from the isle of mann it was a tt racer tuned up to the nuts it could go from 0 mph to 60 in 3 seconds wat a buzz and ther grate fun for tooring 1982 model thats the best yeer

  • about to buy and restore a 1982 model.

you might want to check your cam chain, there was a little bit of noise from it right before it died. the cam chain is a known problem on these bikes, they go at around 25k miles

  • known problem? na... you probably had a lemon. i owned a maxim550 and my brother got a seca550 and put 100,000 miles on them. never had a single problem. not one.

i have moved on to kawasaki but looking back at our ''81'' yamahas i smile and miss those lil bikes. i now ride the new kawi 14 ninja. makes me smile even more :)

  • i never owned a older yamaha. all honda for me. a lot of the early DOHC motors had cam chain issues. even modern DOHC engines have cam chain issues (thanks to the automatic tensioner idea, they wear out in 30k miles) ive worked on enough old maxims ans secas to know theor major faults. duralbe little engines, just noisy

  • Hey, I had this same bike. It was the second bike I ever owned back in 81.

I sold it because I accidentally got air born over a small dip in the road at about 100mph. Thought I was gonna die! Also, the brand new stock exhaust just disintegrated and I couldn't afford a Kerker pipe everyone else said I should get.

    A decent bike!
