  • It's okay, but I definitely prefer Ramey's performance of Don Giovanni! :D

  • Seriously, who's the commendatore??

  • @Sarevok2001 Sergei Koptchak

  • Which opera singer is the Commendatore?

  • Why is Leporello dragged down too?

  • Why does he smile leaning against the tombstone?

  • @sartrific Sign of insanity?

  • Phenomenal acting!

  • Grazie Mille !!!!!

  • best don giovanni acting ever :)

  • Terfel canta?mha!inascoltabile!

  • Welsh accent comes through a little in the italian, but good voice though.

  • WWWOOAAAH!!

  • Bryns voice isn't as deep and commanding as it should be for the Commendatore. It should scare the pants off of you.

  • @godzilloid Actually Bryn (Terfel) is D.Giovanni here, the Commendatore is sung by Sergei Koptchak.

  • what is the plot to this opera i found this piece watching the movie amadeus

  • @chris26479 It's about a rich douchebag trying to have sex and wreaking havoc while his victims try to catch him. Yeah, it's a pretty badass opera.

  • Whos the guy playing Giovanni?

  • @Hyde3291 Bryn Terfel. You should hear his fliegende holländer, it's superb.

  • @fisarmonicista correction: you should hear anything he sings! :p he's superb!

  • @surreal45 Sorry, you're right :D

  • epic

  • I love him to death, but how could Furlanetto miss his "ah padron" entrance after 20+ years of singing this role???

  • @KatherineXIX I saw that too. I was thinking, "Wait a minute, isn't Leporello supposed to say that line twice?"

  • @KatherineXIX a little innovation maybe... or well, you never know what was happening under that table :P

  • @KatherineXIX

Even the best of the best are human. It almost looked like he may have been caught on a yawn. Who knows? It happens. It's not just him, I've heard nearly every great opera do the same at this point. And it's not just opera. Great stage performances, dances, plays, things can go wrong by human nature. Sometimes it makes it more admirable.

  • Terfel's acting in this version of DG is really really great... he seems like a completely different person compared to what i've seen of him in interviews and stuff. maybe its the hair

  • i think "meatloaf" is a fine giovanni, despite his looks. he's doing everything a baritone is suppose to, act out and make the scene lively while singing. the problem for me is commendatore, his voice is nothing special.

  • @devilxhlywood whaa? i thought the commentadore was amazing

  • THIS IS THE DVD I HAVE!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @DarkAmbellina what's the name of the DVD and could you please send me the link on Amazon ? Thanks!

  • @allmoviesoneplace Download it, there's tons of Operas in torrents, including the Magic Flute,Marriage of Figaro and offcourse Don Giovanni.

  • Ramey & Moll or Ramey & Burchuladze, unbeatable!

To my eyes and ears, ahead of all others, yet

  • Compair this "thin" Commandatore with K.Moll or A. Silvestrelli - you will never look at this version again.

  • the opera singers are just RIGHT for this piece!!!!

  • And before anyone says what are talking about, I've seen the original "professional" opera preformed @ least 3 times, not the performers fault, lousy, lazy producer and/or cheographer(sic). Is my point.

  • i can't remember, but is it this piece that he made after his fathers death? i know that after his death Mozart made a lot of dramatic musik.

  • @Katabaka0

Indeed, you are right! He created this piece after his fathers death!

  • how the hell did a guy that fat lay over a thousand women?

  • @Benjaminy2k That's the point. Don Giovanni's been philandering for his entire adult life. The guy's disgusting. He's probably got a thousand diseases and is probably a chubby, stupid mess because of his constant eating and drinking. That's not to say that Mr Terfel is chubby or stupid, but...you get me.

  • Don Giovanni a cenar teco m'invitasti,

    e son venuto.

    Non c'avrei giammai creduto ,

    ma farò quel che potrò.

Leporello un'altra cena, fa che subito si porti.

Ah padron... Ah padron ... Ah padron siam tutti morti!

  • Simply the greates scene (music) ever written for the stage! Mozart created perfection.

  • i thought it was meatloaf

  • Though musically not the best version, acting of Terfel and Furlanetto makes the difference.

  • what happens in this scene? i don't understand the language (and haven't seen the rest of the play)

  • @plagueofangels666 It's in italian and for know what happends in this scene, go to wikipedia ;-)

  • Leporello:"...............Ahhhhhh padron"

  • Comment removed

  • Yet again, I have to say that I adore Terfel's acting skills - he did not 'sing' don Giovanni, he WAS don Giovanni. Post scriptum: why do the interesting ones always die? *sigh*

  • Virtually perfect - Leporello comes in too late!

  • Who are Il Commendatore and Leporello?

  • @LordHettrick : Il Commendatore is Sergei Koptchak, and Leporello is Ferruccio Furlanetto.

  • lol this guys facial expressions are priceless...this theater must be GIGANTIC if he has to be that big lol

  • Grandilocuente, no hay otra forma de describir esto..!!!!!

  • Questo classico della letteratura è un genio. Don Juan Tenorio in America. Don Giovanni, genio.!!

  • commendatore has a nice voice..

  • is there a word for the phenomenon with singers where strong vibrato obscures the pitch? It's happening with Terfel here and with Koptchak.

  • 0:53 - leporello forgot to sing??? :P

  • @surreal45 yes :O

  • woow the effects to create the hellfire look awsome.. very errie

u should have repented don shame for shame

  • Not the final scene... But I reckon this bit isn't epic enough. But very good choreography and acting.

  • I'm agree, Terfel is a great actor and maybe (for me) the greatest bass baritone alive but i still thinking the best Don Giovanni is Cesare Sieppi, but i really like this version.

  • Bryn Terfel is a genius in making opera come to live, he has an amazing stage presence. I've seen hime perform live and his great acting and expressive voice can capture the entire theatre :)

  • ... who cant sing?

  • Incredible as always - Terfel is such a fantastic actor as well as probably the best Bass-Baritone alive!

  • well said...

  • Gorgeous, of course, but this is NOT the final scene.

  • @Lordandmasterpa yeah well it SHOULD be. The last scene is lame. So is most of the beginning of the second act, in fact. Like we need another aria from Don Ottavio telling us how much of a sap he is, and more moaning from Donna Anna.

  • @hymnofashes Well, you can take that up with Mozart and Da Ponte. I'm just saying that the description is wrong; this is not the final scene.

  • @hymnofashes

The opera is still adapted from Don Juan which has a message attached to it, and they felt the need to include it. Cheesy by today's standards but pretty common then. This was still the classical era.

  • @hymnofashes

    You're so cute.

  • @friemelaar Do you mean it? That castle over there on the hill is mine...

  • @hymnofashes Obscure Test Monkey comic reference:

'I am a woman on the inside. On the outside, I have a 12'' thick dong.'

    ;P

  • @friemelaar Come on, you know I'm right. Sure the arias are pretty, but from a storytelling perspective, they don't tell us anything --ANYTHING-- new about the characters singing them. They don't advance the plot. Compare to the catalog aria or Donna Elvira's aria, or this trio, or the opening... quartet? A LOT is going on! It's a disappointment after all the buildup at the end of act one to review that Donna Anna is upset and Ottavio wants to help. We know. The opera is long enough.

  • @hymnofashes You are right, I was actually agreeing with you ; )

Some people actually write comments to praise wit, and not just to stir up s**t.

Blimey, I should become a rapper, like.

  • honestry, 1st time when i saw movie version, I thought the dead father was "Iron Man 29" kind of sci-fi-sh character in rococo period..too much imagination, I was like 7. lol

  • Is Terfel a bass-baritone or a baritone?

    Different sources say different things...

  • Subs please? Fantastic scene. This is my dream opera to do.

  • an army grade. like commandant i guess

  • an officer?...

  • whats means "commandatore"?

  • Literally Knight Commander, the official title of Commendatore is awarded by decree of the President of Italy to individuals who are given this honour in the Italian Order of Merit known as the Ordine al Merito della Repubblica. The Commendatore (or Commander) rank is a higher award than that of "Ufficiale" (Officer), which in turn is higher than the first level of "Cavaliere".Il Commendatore is also a character in Mozart's Don Giovanni.

    "From Wikipedia"....

  • We r talking now only for Mozart's commendatore.

Btw, why they call Berlusconi as cavaliere?

  • Il dissoluto punito ossia il Don Giovanni the complete title of Don Giovanni was written by Lorenzo Da Ponte and mozart has written music.

you understand that in 1787 like now for an italian Commendatore is Commendatore !!!!!

  • so its italian's army officer, but why here looks like ghost from the under world?...

  • He isn't an army officer.. but anyway he is truly a ghost !! in fact in the first scene Don Giovanni kills him in a duel. Return from hell (clearly he wasn't padre Pio) and "It exhorts the careless villain to repent of his wicked lifestyle, but Giovanni adamantly refuses. The statue sinks into the earth and drags Giovanni down with him. Hellfire surrounds Don Giovanni as he is carried below"

    "From Wikipedia" ...

P.S Berlusconi is CAVALIERE as was Pavarotti.

honour for merit business and music

  • @PP1969GR cause it's his spirit in a statue...he's dead

  • I know he's dead. So it could be any statue?

  • Oh, no it's a statue of him from his grave site. It shows it earlier in the show.

  • and he was an army officer?...

  • I think. It's also like a title though in Italy. You should just get the show and watch it, it's awesome

  • I know, I ve seen it 20 years ago. I remember that I liked the way that don G. and Leporelo used those masks...:)

  • Det är så jävla bra... Mozart is the shit!

  • umm...I freaking love this opera X]

    [plot and music]

  • Where did Dom Giovanni die? I just saw that he got dragged down to hell.

  • c bien ça change de annie cordy

  • This Commendatore is a pure baritone and his voice is wobbling all the time; Terfel has no voice any more and he´s still trying to overcome his physical problems but I understand its nearly end of opera and he had a lot to sing... but hes a great actor, no doubt!

  • @WhiteProfondo

  • Koptchak a baritone??????????? hahahahaa

  • I'll be danged, meatloaf expanded his range to the classics?

  • @snuff612 Now, that's not very nice.

  • Huh??? Leporello dies too???

  • No, he comes out of the ground later clutching the cross.

  • Very interesting, don Giovanni drags Leporello to hell. I understand that's a change made by the director in this particular performance?

  • It was changed in this performance. The original performance included everybody in the story rejoicing after the oppressing Don's death. Leporello survived also.

  • Ok, thanks!

  • @LifeJuice90 Leporello is a pervert and deserved to also be dragged into hell. I don't care if that little swine was clutching a cross. So what? He just submits to the most powerful threat in front of him, which is God in this case.

  • Huh, when did I say whether he deserved to live or die? Your talking like I was happy he lived. I don't really care, I just like Ferruccio Furlanetto, and I think Terfel isn't a very good Don.

  • Actually Leporello reappears in the following scene to tell all the others what happened. (In this particular staging he just suddenly appears back out from under the floor in the same position still clutching the cross and jittering)

  • i saw this in my music class

now i have to do a critique about this!!

i dont know to star..a little help please??

  • Ramey ,Moll, and Furlanetto are still the best!

  • agreed. although i do prefer bryn's acting better.

  • @hoochikooch

Absolutely. But you should look up Rodney Gilfrey... amazing staging

  • Not true, Terfel is the best baritone of the last 50 years!

  • @pavelkostov Erm....bass-baritone.

  • wrong voice type for him. sigh.

  • for me, the best version of this scene in comparison to the others on you tube.

  • Oh yah I agree with you..

  • No words besides: Absolutely brilliant!

  • the peak of performance art ,not to be surpassed by any other composer.

a phenomen like mozart is unexplainable (wolfgang johan goethe)

  • I think the commendatore has a funny voice. I like the metallic sound of it....that`s fitting good to the role of a statue.

  • I'm not an opera fan but while sailing from Miami to Costa Rica I had this in a pile of opera CDs to listen too on night watch and it stood out as my favorite. To this day I can't listen to much opera but this one is special. Very special. Ok, Madam Butterfly was good too.

  • I think Terfel murders this great scene with his uncertain pitch, chaotic vibrato and overacting and therefore deserves to 'die'. Not a patch on Ruggero Raimondi's mellifluous and subtle performance on film for Joseph Losey (the sound on the Youtube posting is really crook though).

  • I wouldn't say he murders it, not my favorite role for him though

  • I get chills every-time i hear this. So beautiful.

  • can someone tell me, where can i find the lyric of this?

    thnx

  • I much prefered Kurt Moll as the commendatore. But Terfel does a nice job as DG.

  • Kurt Moll was just so much more menacing. His large frame and his booming voice made you believe he was dragging samuel ramey to hell

  • "Don Giovanni, you invited me to dinner, thanks! Let's talk." "OMG, it speaks! Rello, get another Spamburger." "(Chattering teeth)" "Forget the Spam, I'm here for your sausage." "Like H---!!" "We'll get to that In a moment - unless you're sorry: shake hands on escargot, and I'll nip you right off? Gloves?" "NO! Say you're BUSY! (Chatter)" "The great Don Giovanni isn't scared of a stuccoed coot. Do your bratwurst!, old man! Shee---t!" "Sir, language! Almost done. Relish?" "Not with vienna."

  • Absolutely brilliant

  • I wish i new Italian but the subtitle/translation screen helps a lot and i get used to it but i really wish i didn't have to use it.

  • But why is Meatloaf singing in an opera :)

  • The end with the chorus is so powerfull.

  • does anybody have lyrics of this scene? Please!!!

  • I am sorry the system prevents writing an internet address. However if you search in Google Mozart Don Giovanni Libretto, you will find a Swiss site called Opera Guide. It is in German, but don't worry, just click on the letter M, then in the list of Mozart you will find the Don Giovanni, and in the table you can choose the language of the libretto. The Commendatore scene is at the end of each language. Naturally, Italian would be best! (joking)

    Ciao from Rome.

  • ça va me servir pour jouer, même si je suis en train de me demander pourquoi on m'a prise pour jouer le commandeur. Je n'en ai ni la stature ni la voix.

  • Repent Donny G! Repent damnit!!!!!!!!

  • @12001200 no no and no.

  • lol...Leporello messed it up!

  • haha thats right he forgot 1 "ahh padrone"

  • Wonderful.

  • i like the long bas on Amadeus during this scene

    its so powerful

  • Don Giovanni, the greatest opera... period.

  • what about "The marriage of Figaro"?

  • Amazing scene, I just wish this video had subtitles.

  • Just wondering, what language are all these opera singers singing, this is opera right?

  • Comment removed

  • this is don giovanni an opera by mozart, and this one is in italian

  • Italian, naturally! The very word "Opera" means "Work" (Work of art) in Italian.

  • très émouvant video ,merci

  • Views: 172,937 just this? Mozart deserves at least one million

  • very powerful

  • Pas mal!

surtout au début quand le chanteur interprétant Leporello oublie le début de sa partie.

    Est-ce qu'il l'a fait exprès ou pas?

    Bonne vidéo,il n'y a rien à dire.

  • The Commendatore (sp?) works much better as a profondo, but this version really lets the ending exchange between leperollo and the don come out

  • Sweet! Thanks for posting the only 6 minutes that the trombones play in the entire opera!

  • To be honest Mozart usually bores me to death, but this is just fabulous! Really makes me want to listen to more of his works (assuming they don't bore me :P).

  • Requiem (k626), Don Giovanni, and Die Zauberflüte are the top of the top when it comes to Mozart.

  • who cares.... get over it
