Coach Coe, that is exactly right. I coach 13-15 rec, 1-3-1 was tried after my players did not do well in man or std 2-3. I have an excellent pt guard, with quick hands, in the 1-3-1 he flourished with lots of tipped balls and steals leading to easy baskets.
But by end of 2nd qtr, they were exploiting this zones weakness, the low post/short corners for too many easy baskets. Switching back to a 2-3 solved that problem, and we went on to win game. Be flexable, be ready to make adjustments.
Your best athlete should be in the middle with your best anticipators on the wing. I always put my tallest player on the point and the last player down low.
The most important thing when running a 1-3-1 zone defense is to take away the high post. You can not let the offense catch the ball at the high post, or even dribble to the high post. Once the ball gets there, they have too many options. When running the 1-3-1, deny the high post, stop dribble penetration, and stay in the passing lanes. That is how to be effective.
the only problem there is if the 5 of the offensive team is in the middle of the arc he can pass any 1 on the floor. thats why i need to change the defensive play every time.
The 131 is amazing. And my team runs it all the time but the way we run it, is to keep the "1" as in this video not running back and forth as much because in most cases you do not need to guard people 30 feet from the basket. The 3 and 4 or outside defenders should keep them off the 3 point line. When doing this the baseline has to be able to read the passes but if the opposite wing drops as he shows it will work.Another thing the 3 and 4 dont need to go to the corner thats the baseline guys job
actually it is their job to go down there and stop them from penetrating middle and give them just enough space to take a contest long jumpshot. As like evry zone defense its to amke stupid players make bad decisions.
That is a pretty ignorant statement that 5 should be the best athlete. So if your stud 2 guard is 6 feet 1 inches tall you are going to put him in the middle and put the 6 foot 7 inch center elsewhere? Get a clue when you try to insult someone else. You do not know what you are talking about,
i agree. where he has the 5, thats where i put my best player so they can ball hawk(like a safety in football) and look to steal and take the ball down court. i read that the 2 should be under the basket but i disagreee
what if the offence is 1-1-3 on the 3 point arc is the point guard on the left elbow is offender 5 on the three point baselin corner is offender 2 and offender 4 on the amoeba zone and offender 3 is just oposite offender 2.the play is initiated by 2 @ 3 crossing underneath each other,1 pass to 3 as the pass occur 4 goes up the lane and seals or spin facing offender 3 to recive the ball for a close range shot

i used this defense on my team and it was great...... but the only problem was passing it to the low post for easy buckets on the other team
