All of us have a wall, it's the wall we put up around our heart over the years to keep us from getting hurt. Some of us build it higher than others. Some people build it so high that nobody can ever get in again, and the person within it goes mad. Just like in this album, he built his wall too high.
why does every"expert" feel the need to explain what a song is "really" about? in actuality all you can even hope to explain is what the author might have intended with the song... what it is "about" is in the ear and mind of the listener.... what it means to me isnt what it means to you and not what it means to her etc.... and that is the beauty of art
I always thought that the last line of the song was "Mother why'd you have to be so high" in the sense that part of what messed up Pink was his mother committing suicide. I mean he grew up without a father and losing an overprotective mother would mess anyone up pretty bad. Just a thought
The song is about Fear. The Wall is about building a wall to keep the bad out and all that is wrong away..It could mean a mean mother, the govt, war, disease, drug abuse- all that haunts the human race.
@newmoon56 thank you, someone who gets it perfectly as i do. Its all about the WALL we build to protect us. well said sir, its why its so sad and genius at the same time
@lindseywagners Maybe. For sure Roger was unhappy for most of his adult life: he never knew his father who died here in Italy in 1944 during the WWII (see also John Lennon who lost her mom when he was only 14), and I might suppose he was angry towards everyone. Almost no one amongst of the British rock genius of his generation have a nice memory of school days. I figure out that the decades past the WWII had to be hard for the children of those who fought in the war.
@newmoon56 this song is about who ur mother build you as a hummer , who she with her protecion feeling destroy you little by little until you are just another brick in the WALL ... there is not evil or good, you have to take that away from you if you wanna wake up and Do something to improve your world or in others words Our world .
@newmoon56 I don't agree. I believe The Wall is what keeps us from each other, it's the wall between people. Mother, dead father, government, cheating wife, teachers are bricks in this wall... All things that make us distant from each other, Fear, yes
I HATE all the clueless people on here... just saying... i hate that people should even ASK what movie this is. It's a fucking classic and the band Pink Floyd is one of the most genius bands in the history of musical profession. That is all i have to say about that.
This movie and ganja saved my life when i was about 14-15 , i was literally conteplating suicide but this movie gave me a whole new perspective on life. I owe everything i am today to those times for persevering through hell and high water. Im so thankful to love god , and to have a good life and to be able to even get high and go skate or enjoy the simple things in life like puting on the wall and zoning out. God i miss being that age, i feel old now but i will always cherish those times.......
@pizzaskate420 T='the wall' wasn't a good thing at all and it was put up one brick at a time through years of emotional trauma....I think you missed the concept of the movie- the wall made him more and more insane....

@tanzanos One of the best things about Pink Floyd songs are that they can be interpreted so many ways, I've always seen this song about an over protective mother, who won't let her son do anything on his own, and her son doesn't know how to cope without her guidence, leading him to putting up "the wall".
@tanzanos We can have the interpretation that we want of the song, and we probably can understand the song that way, but the first sense is about over protecting mother, as the subject of the wall is more a personnal subject, that about government...
The music of Pink Floyd resonates with many truth seekers and mind explorers who delve into the unknown. If you are a truth seeker, search "Truth Contest" in Google and click on the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Everyone needs to see this. The Present will turn this world right-side up if it reaches enough people. You will see what I mean when you read the first page.
I think it's about a man that become infantile because he's never had to do anything on his own his whole life... Now his mother is gone, and he has all these question's and no answers.
@mcgowanm095 Ok, I can totally get on board with that statement. My beef is with the posts here that describe this as being about an "abusive" mother. Being over-protective usually has the intent of love behind it, regardless of it's outcome.
Never once does the narrator say ANYTHING about abuse! If u look at the entire song he's expressing how his mother, the war, the absence of his father, & later the turbulence of the 60's/drugs shaped his relationship w/woman & how he perceives acceptance. Was his mother over-protective? Absolutely. But she was a woman on her own raising a boy in a rapidly changing era. Ultimately, parents DO pass on their fears/beliefs. I have an infant son and I want so badly to protect him. It's beautiful.
@alexanduhDanziggg also figuritively about 'the state'. its up to people how they wanna interpret it tho. personally i like to listen when really pissed off wi stuff happenin :( but yeah we know it aint an i love u mom song XD

@alexanduhDanziggg not abusive just verry overprotective. his mother never let him expierence life and kept him closed up. He ended up messed up bc of it.

I actually expect to see some insightful and deep comment from a pink floyd video but not one that i've seen has a comment that even scratches the surface. It's either something to do with the first 2 minutes and the title or something about how high someone got while watching this. I hate to be a killjoy but i'm just a little depressed at how narrow minded the internet is getting. Don't think of this as flaming or trolling, just let it soak in and kick the idea around a little in your heads.
Hate to spoil it kids, but this isn't the type of song you want to send to mom on Mother's Day or any other day. It is a great song, though and this is such a great clip from the movie.
