    かっこよすぎだろ…

  • Whose performance is this? I love the bendy violin!

  • @MrDanieldiver Yeah, the "violin solo" parts are just perfect.

  • I was driving in Mexico in 1987 listening to that fabulous music after a visit to the Pyramids- and i ended up entering the back bumper of a truck and demolishing my Volkswagen Atlantis! I survived unharmed.

  • This music is so simple and yet so complex.

  • Absolutamente Brilhante !

  • Despite the piece being 15 mins, you can't help but listen to it in it's entirety. Unbelievably hypnotic!

  • so so gorgeous

  • I wish I had come up with Steve Reich's music. My life would not have been in vain.

  • loving the 3:59 key change.

  • I don't like this version - I prefer the one from Octet/Violin Phase album. Much faster and better flowing.

  • Argggh I used to listen to the whole section on imeem but then it merged with bloody myspace...

  • Makes me happy

  • this piece is amazing... do you have the rest?

  • wow, this is great!!

  • It reminds me the greek musician Mano Xatjidaki.

  • Steve reichs' music is so hypnotic, I think I know why! Hynotists use a swinging pendulum to hypnotise people, they get hypnotised by the pendulum because it is a repetitive movement, it is the same with sound, if you repeat a sound over and over with subtle variations then the listener (if they can concentrate hard enough) will be hypnotised, therefore repetition could be the key to hypnosis! Steve reich is the best composer I have ever heard!

  • who forgot about 12 tone music? Not you or I.

  • I love this music & find it relaxing. I like to close my eyes & drift off on this music. I would even like to listen to this as I am going when I eventually die (hopefully many years from now). However it causes the opposite reaction in my wife - she gets tense & irritated.

  • You need a better wife. :)

  • If music has to bring you in a different mood...this certainly does. Congratulations Reich!

  • r u musicologist?

  • what is zeitgeist plz?

  • A zeitgeist is something that does not exist in a material form and continues to change, for example culture's are zeitgeist. Zeit refers to the time over which the change happens and Geist refers to its nonmaterialistic properties.

  • In a few words, the spirit of times

  • you can find The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young on youtube.

and if you want to compare your answers with other's just email me I'll send you the most common things people see in the music so you know if you're off the track or not.

cheers, and thanks for your help!!!!

  • I also need impressions for this piece, The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young. so please send a 2nd questionnaire with your impressions about Young's piece written in any of the boxes---just make sure to write "Young/Second Dream" before starting to write so that I know it's not for one of the 3 other pieces that the questionnaire is designed for.

Thanks. just listen to the music and give your impressions/ free association comments. it's actually pretty fun.

  • Hi! Would you like to help on a study to better understand cultural evolution, memetics, trends, and the influence of zeitgeists on music and human activities in general? If so please fill in this questionnaire--it's quick and fun. You just have to give your impressions on 3 pieces of music.

Here's the form (add dot and remove space!):

If you are interested by the research/ results, email me !

  • fantastico!

  • strange for me...i don't like minimalizm...but i like this!!!

  • great track. :)

  • i could really hear the repitition, ostinato, and lasyer of sound. it really gives a mesmerising effect on the listener

  • sloppy? how is that?

its different than the one with Steve Reich and Musicians.

all recorindings/performances are different in that way.

its mixed differently, different things are higher/lower in the mix. The Basses and Cellos I do believe,

have a you-might-say More Dynamic Soun on this than on the other one. There his are louder, its less streamlined and eq'd.

  • I know this piece, and I love it, but interpretation is bad. There were only two recordings, and you fell on the bad one. Too bad! ^^

It is much more beautiful on CD or Steve Reich plays part of piano, and quality is better.

(CD is called Octet - Violin Phase - Music for a broad unit, it is a yellow box with a piece of partition of Octet above)

(I am French, I do many faults, sorry)

  • Yes definetely. This recording seems sloppy to me, although the other pieces on this CD (Triple Quartet) are amazing.

But yes, the CD you mentioned is so much better.

  • I couldn't get the video, although I can hear the music. Is this just me?

  • No. This is just the music. From a CD.

  • I really like this piece. Awesome composition. Reich's use of Augmentation and Dimunition of thematic material is ingenius. Just gotta love the Minimalism.

  • very interesting, I think it gets much better towards the end. Though I've not heard all of Reich's "Daniel Variations", this song's first half sort of reminds me of the parts therein that I wasn't crazy about (though the parts I did like are indescribable, sans a performance of course) Too bad he sold out!

  • gratitiude, gratitude...

  • hey wo its insane, but I'm on this recording. this is the Ossia/Alarm Will Sound recording of the piece, off the album TRIPLE QUARTET (with the kronos quartet)

  • I didn't know this was Alarm Will Sound playing this.. I thought it was Bang on a Can for some reason. anyway, awesome

  • the title is "Music for a Large Ensemble" :)

  • What is the name of this piece?

  • Simply "Music for Large Ensemble" That's the title. Clever, isn't it?

  • Well, he could have called it "Baseball for Large Ensemble". That would have just been missleading.

  • That is true.

  • Beautiful music. I had never heard this particular piece, for it is quite difficult to find Steve Reich CD's in my country. Hope to hear it all pretty soon. Thanks for posting this

  • Wow really nice, thanks for uploading. Steve reich really can do no wrong, although 18 musicians is easily my favourite!

  • You are very right!!! But I love this piece a little more than 18M, but anyway: Steve Reich is the best.

  • Hi everyone!

I'm studying 3 minimalist pieces for my master's project. Please help me and fill in this questionnaire I've done : fd2.formdesk(dot)com/tagg/ChausseauMinimal . All you have to do is listen to 3 pieces and give your impressions--it might be fun and exciting!

    Good luck !

    Nicolas
