I was driving in Mexico in 1987 listening to that fabulous music after a visit to the Pyramids- and i ended up entering the back bumper of a truck and demolishing my Volkswagen Atlantis! I survived unharmed.
Steve reichs' music is so hypnotic, I think I know why! Hynotists use a swinging pendulum to hypnotise people, they get hypnotised by the pendulum because it is a repetitive movement, it is the same with sound, if you repeat a sound over and over with subtle variations then the listener (if they can concentrate hard enough) will be hypnotised, therefore repetition could be the key to hypnosis! Steve reich is the best composer I have ever heard!
nothing new!!!! in this music there is no beginning and end...like life....existence...but even this music will be forgotten.. like the twelve tone music...
I love this music & find it relaxing. I like to close my eyes & drift off on this music. I would even like to listen to this as I am going when I eventually die (hopefully many years from now). However it causes the opposite reaction in my wife - she gets tense & irritated.
A zeitgeist is something that does not exist in a material form and continues to change, for example culture's are zeitgeist. Zeit refers to the time over which the change happens and Geist refers to its nonmaterialistic properties.
you can find The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young on youtube.
and if you want to compare your answers with other's just email me I'll send you the most common things people see in the music so you know if you're off the track or not.
I also need impressions for this piece, The Second Dream Of The High Tension Line Step by La Monte Young. so please send a 2nd questionnaire with your impressions about Young's piece written in any of the boxes---just make sure to write "Young/Second Dream" before starting to write so that I know it's not for one of the 3 other pieces that the questionnaire is designed for.
Thanks. just listen to the music and give your impressions/ free association comments. it's actually pretty fun.

I really like this piece. Awesome composition. Reich's use of Augmentation and Dimunition of thematic material is ingenius. Just gotta love the Minimalism.
very interesting, I think it gets much better towards the end. Though I've not heard all of Reich's "Daniel Variations", this song's first half sort of reminds me of the parts therein that I wasn't crazy about (though the parts I did like are indescribable, sans a performance of course) Too bad he sold out!
hey wo its insane, but I'm on this recording. this is the Ossia/Alarm Will Sound recording of the piece, off the album TRIPLE QUARTET (with the kronos quartet)
Beautiful music. I had never heard this particular piece, for it is quite difficult to find Steve Reich CD's in my country. Hope to hear it all pretty soon. Thanks for posting this
I'm studying 3 minimalist pieces for my master's project. Please help me and fill in this questionnaire I've done : fd2.formdesk(dot)com/tagg/ChausseauMinimal . All you have to do is listen to 3 pieces and give your impressions--it might be fun and exciting!

I don't like this version - I prefer the one from Octet/Violin Phase album. Much faster and better flowing.

sloppy? how is that?
its different than the one with Steve Reich and Musicians.
all recorindings/performances are different in that way.
its mixed differently, different things are higher/lower in the mix. The Basses and Cellos I do believe,
have a you-might-say More Dynamic Soun on this than on the other one. There his are louder, its less streamlined and eq'd.
Stimulator7 3 years ago
I know this piece, and I love it, but interpretation is bad. There were only two recordings, and you fell on the bad one. Too bad! ^^
It is much more beautiful on CD or Steve Reich plays part of piano, and quality is better.
(CD is called Octet - Violin Phase - Music for a broad unit, it is a yellow box with a piece of partition of Octet above)
(I am French, I do many faults, sorry)
arthurouvrard 3 years ago
Yes definetely. This recording seems sloppy to me, although the other pieces on this CD (Triple Quartet) are amazing.
But yes, the CD you mentioned is so much better.

Simply "Music for Large Ensemble" That's the title. Clever, isn't it?
