  • I was listening to Al on an interview, and I thought he said this concert was actually recorded in the morning for a television special. Can you imagine being that "on" early in the morning? He is truly a great talent!

By the way, the show was called "Soul" and it aired in 1973 on PBS. They are currently in the process of finding the old video tape and attempting to salvage the surviving shows. I am hoping they will release it on DVD. Cross your fingers!!!

  • @hopediamond4real that would be awesome. I love PBS anyways, but surely miss the seventies!

  • Well, regards. 2011 is upon us. May all Bee Gee, Al Green, La Roux, Talking Heads, Rolling Stones, Sam Cooke, Curtis Mayfield, Mozart, Schubert, Sex Pistols, Justin Timberlake, whatvever -> Planetary love and respect one another's choices, preferences and even dislikes. As the French say, wisely, " Vive La Difference!". It'd be dull if we all agreed. Harmonious, but prosaic. Happy New Year to all who read this. Keep listening. Keep loving. Keep Being patient and tolerant. L.O.V.E. x <3 X

  • @PerignonPop RESPECT!!!

  • this is not good, it's perfect !!. the best song ever and the best performance i have seen

  • The Book Of Eli...

  • Thank you for posting that performance. It's unbelievable at best. I'm a huge fan of his and yet because of the fact he stopped performing secular music never heard him sing this song like this.

  • Chegando a 300,0000...

  • @Benedictineful to es maricon y muy simple!

  • 10/10 ....priceless / timeless ........massive 5 star

  • All Green is a master of both the instrument of the voice and the phasing of words but in my opinion some songs just don't work that well when done with a "r/b" twist compared to other methods and this is one of them. The timbre of both Robin and Barry in the original is perfect for the character of the song; sad. In Al's rendition you never get the sense of "dispair" the original captures, rather we enjoy an exercise to Al's voice/range/control. There is a difference.

  • Stop the rain!

  • Al, Mr Green boy this is real music live band and a true voice nothing created in the studio, what happened to music, he feel everything he singing about...love it

  • Footnote to previous comment: He also covered Roy Orbison's "Oh, Pretty Woman" but it wasn't a hit for him--never released as a single; however when you talk about soul hits: Love and Happiness, Let's Get Married, several dozen gospel recordings, etc. you have to give this man credit where credit is due. And he's STILL performing since 1967 professionally, since age 9 as an unknown--shall I go on, or have I included enough to make the point that this man is most certainly NOT "average "?!?!

  • Someone hasn't done their homework. AG either wrote or co-wrote nearly every hit song he sang with the exception of the following: Can't Get Next to You, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart?, For the Good Times, I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Put a Little Love in Your Heart, and Funny How Time Slips Away. All of the others were either written or co-written by him: Back Up Train,Tired of Being Alone, Let's Stay Together, Still in Love with You,Call Me, Living for You, etc. 40 years worth of hits!

  • @hopediamond4real How many of those were world wide hits? big hits? what has he done apart from a few covers since the early 70s You may love Al Green, and he is a good singer, but great belongs to others such as Sam Cooke, James Brown,Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, not Al Green.

  • AL IS THE MAN

  • @GeorgiiiiRaWK If he's so "average" why watch his video and post hateful things?

  • @coryepps That is your opinion, however in the musical context , which is what we are debating here, I happen to think he is average.

  • @coryepps To reiterate this is a musical forum, my debate did not include his Christian profession, merely his musical ability, which I find average.

  • @Goblinshead Well, it's a good thing you're not a main judge of talent...otherwise, we wouldn't have amazing soul songs and amazing soulful renditions like this one (the one that you spent/wasted your time watching, critiquing, and commenting about a man who you think is "average")

  • @coryepps Listen you vacuous simpleton I am merely stating my opinion, which I am entitled to do, I do not rate Al Green, I never have, next to other artists he has always been average to me. Now run along your puerile drivel has become irksome and mundane!

  • @Goblinshead You say you don't rate Al Green, but in the same statement, you say he's average. Would that not be "rating" him?? And yes, you are allowed your opinion...and I am also allowed to give my opinion on your opinion, therefore, you can give your opinion on my opinion which leads to us both being opinionated on each other's opinions.....

Opinion...just figured I say it again.

  • @coryepps Al Green last had a hit in the 70s that makes him average to me too, the real soul singers like Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye were far superior songwriters to Al Green, he was average next to real class.

  • @coryepps "Just figured I say it again" jesus how poor is that sentence? you are aakin to the village idiot dude, very poor grammar indeed!

  • @coryepps Listen bollock chops, Goblin is allowed his opinion, why dont you fuck off and leave him alone, we are not interested in what you have to say, this is a musical forum, take your religion an shove it up your huge gonga!

  • @slugman2000 Huy huy huy. Keep your foul and offensive language off this page man. There's just no call. No call at all. So, please?

  • @PerignonPop Try not be so parochial, its a free country..if I decide to swear to make a point I shall do so, go and clean your ears out with a gun you simpleton!

  • @PerignonPop You parochial hick, you need to titivate your grammar, come back when you can type a sentence without an error, "Not.Very. Bright. Are. You" you fucking simpleton! you need further education you truculent tosser!

  • @PerignonPop How pathetic to make a threat over a computer! that is indicative of the type of person you are, a knuckle dragging half wit, who is barely litterate. This is an open forum where people are entitled to express their opinions, it may not concur with yours, but to make idle threats is disgusting, you are a discrace and should be reported.

  • @GeorgiiiiRaWK "Barely litterate"? You're a scream. What's this - YouTube User ID # 23849? In the first instance I requested merely that you cease ranting at people and using foul language on a page where there was none. You chose to be abusive, escalate matters and then start bleating. Don't hand it out if you can't take it.

You sir, are "a discrace" and should be in a remedial English class at approximately Primary Five level. But I'd fear for the kids, so maybe not.

    Grow up.

  • @PerignonPop You need to grow up actually, why are you trying to impose your will on others, bullying will not be tolerated on you tube.

  • @PerignonPop You Tube bully, go elsewhere with your veiled threats, people like you make me sick.

  • @PerignonPop You do need further education, it is ver poor grammar to start any senetence with "But" I suggest you seek further education you half wit! how dare you preach to others when you do not have the rudiments of English, you are the object of others ridicule, now run along simpleton, you are becoming mundane and irksome!

  • @PerignonPop Please do not worry about me "son" I can hold my own on the dark side of any town, so spare your verbal parlance, I do not like the fact that you even dare to insinuate that people are not allowed to voice their opinions, you are a feckless tosser!

  • @PerignonPop One word describes you perfectly=Knob!

  • @PerignonPop "You need Sectioned brother" why are you using capital letters in mid sentence? also just look at the above and try to spot the deliberate mistake, you idiot!

  • @PerignonPop Who is "sectioned brother"?

  • @slugman2000 Maybe I will... by the way, you might want to cut down on the profanity so that people MIGHT actually listen to what you have to say. (No religion in my opinion, just plain ol' common sense and class)

  • @coryepps Who made you the sheriff of you tube, leave people alone to debate on whatever terms they wish, if you dont like the language, leave...its as simple as that!

  • I want to know where I can get a copy of the ENTIRE "Plaid suit" concert.

  • Yes the Bee Gees put in on the map and sold it main stream pop, but Al .... he ... freaked it for R&B. Well done!

  • @fredtret

The BG's may have done that for SOME people. But for others, there was only Al Green. Absolutely nobody can improve on The Rev.

  • @GeorgiiiiRaWK actually Al Green had a hit with Ann Nesby in 2003 with the Grammy nominated "Put it on Paper"...

  • great music is great music stop comparing this artist to that artist all put out great music for us to enjoy as the great ray charles said its relative tell a good story have agood hook through in a great melody and its goig to do what it do baby

  • Wonders who are the 12 dicks that disliked this!!

  • how dare you? the real hoodbillys love al green. he was around way before this song made it big. when a black man couldn't even drink water at a restaraunt the same as white people. yet he was touring in the worst shit holes ever. Yet his music was crossover to all races... so how dare you? check out the real hoodbillys on you tube

  • Umph, Umph, Umph!!!! Bee Gees may have done it first--even written it, but Al Green OWNS it right here--you can't deny that!!!!!!!!!!!! Sing it, AL!

  • So Beautiful.. What a shame they just dont make music like this any more..

  • To other races, meaning no disrepect, Al Green was the equivalent of the Bee Gees to the Black community. You have your idols and we have ours, plain and simple, so can we just enjoy the music, no matter who is singing? Personally, I love the Beatles too, but you have to show some understanding of what sounds good or better to other races.

  • Hey look, I believe it just depends on where you grew up and who your parents were. In the Black community ...(and not just black) Al Green is a legend. I'm 31 and my Father and Grandfather both would play his music when they were in the "dog house" or when they wanted to dance ..hell for any reason. In our community we grew up hearing Al Green and after you say his name legend went right behind it. We were also aware and danced to the Bee Gees. Mr. Al Green is above average in our eyes.

  • al green looks so much like denzel washington hahahaha

  • how can georgii say al green was an average singer.. he had more soul in the tip of his finger than all the bee gees put together..i guess one mans meat is another mans poison.. but i will admit this is not als best version of this song

  • @GeorgiiiiRaWK I agree with you, I call him "average Al"

  • @bonzadog41 bar far this is not the best version of this song. But I listened to the whole thing.

  • @MrRherron Do you struggle to type Barry Gibb?

  • @MrRherron To reiterate, "rash" is the correct word here, however a hercluean effort on you part to cognate.

  • and they continue.. wow

  • I love the Bee Gees and Al Green. For the critics out there, kiss my ass.

  • This Is Classic motown Kids Way before There ever was a BeeGee!

  • @suzesrc You dim wanker, the Bee Gees wrote the song, get back to sleep you village idiot!

  • @NelsonsHat that was classy i grew up in detroit you village idiot so that is what i remembered . do you think you coulf be more polite asshole .

  • @suzesrc Who cares where you grew up! you are still a simpleton to me!

  • @NelsonsHat who cares !

  • @suzesrc Indeed so shut your vacuous mouth up!

  • Did y'all really just argue over the internet calling people dipshits, idiots, and imbeciles for trying to defend Al Green...get a life lol. You could at least be creative with your insults..

  • THERE IS NOTHING ABOUT THE REVEREND AL GREEN THAT IS "AVERAGE". AVERAGE DOESN'T STAY AROUND FOR 40 PLUS YEARS WITH HIT AFTER HIT AND SELLOUT CONCERTS. AND THE REVEREND'S LAST BIG HIT WAS IN 2008 WITH "LAY ME DOWN" WITH THE SAME TITLED CD.

  • you're a fool GeorgiiiiRaWK. If you're going to disrespect Al Green and promote the Bee Gees then go on the fricken Bee Gees pages you idiot. This isn't a competition, we're fans of Al Green you moron.

  • @000aysh People have the right to their opinion, and the freedom to express it wherever they wish, you are the moron here, do not attempt to suppress people with your truculence imbecile!

  • luv this song by Al Green & the Bgees.

  • the beegees are great and al green is great.

    let's leave it at that!

  • ( LEE ) He had it then and he still has it now // doing it his way

  • HOW can you NOT like this vid?

  • vincesmell is up all night and still gets it all wrong, all the profound statements the facts too, still he manages to fuck up big time...idiot. lmao

  • @neoams100 Is that the best you can offer the world? over decades of music! we are talking about the modern era, because thats what these clowns are being contentious about, please try to keep up!

  • Al Green did not get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame 15 years ago on the basis of one song. He and Teddy Pendergrass provided great soul covers of the Gibbs' song.

  • @Goblinshead

15 hours ago I did not know that you have been existing at all. I posted here my opinion about music, not about any person and you think you have the right to insult me? Music is the bridge for understanding and connecting culture - I walked on it, since I'm 9 and I respect as a whitie the black music heritage as it must be. Who is here an idiot, based of what was posted? Open your narrow mind man and you will see wider and understand wiser...

  • @damngrooveman Get an education then you may join in with the debate, but until you learn to read and write, you are just another idiot on you tube.
