Personally, I think a lot of metal is crap. Hell, a lot of music is crap. But the reason Ozzy's bands are usually the best is his ability to spin a lyric and his ability to attract some of the best talent on the planet. He's like a great GM of a sports franchise who just gets it. Great stuff.
Bob and Lee should have sued the Osbourne's for using their performances on Tribute without permission. No Bones Movies and Goodbye to Romance were with Bob and Lee.
After meeting Ozzy (and reading his autobiogr.), I am convinced that he is a sincere man and approaches his art with tireless inspiration. I appreciate your efforts to "air" these cuts in their original (almost lost), brilliant form. I'm sure that Oz does, too. Thanx!
Mayhap the best metal ever? Thanks to the hard work of Bob Daisley and Randy Rhoads. They pretty much wrote everything here. Sure Ozzy had his whiney voice but he really didn't write much on the first two albums. It was the collaboration of Daisley/Rhoads that made it happen. BTW I love Ozzy's whiney voice in those days....and he did a lot of the lyrics. Almost picture perfect for a metal album!
i was lucky enough to see Randy and Ozzy play their first gig together in Glasgow septenmber 1980 ....little skinny guy played like a lion ...used his white les paul and polka dot flying V ......we loved him ......still do ....
This album simple put everyone in 1981 in their place. Looking back, I'm amazed it was Ozzy. Old Sabbath fans complained about Ozzy's "whining" lyrics...but I thought this was one of the best metal albums ever, thanks to RR...as well as Daisley and Kerslake. Everything about it - the runes, the cryptic scribbles, and astrological signs....the bloody madman...the books of spells....screamed metal mayhem. Max Norman nailed this one!
Agree100%, this album took things to another level and may never be matched in some respects. There's more going on in here than others of this era managed in a greatest hits compilation. e.g. Rush / AC/DC great bands, but nobody matched Ozzy's music. Just listen to this tune from the opening to the closing, it's so different from anyone elses stuff, takes seriously sharp turns sounding like three or four songs in one. Nobody else did anything like that or even thought of it. Always a favorite.
@BannerOfVictory ----- mainly because of the musical partnership he had with Randy. Nothing Ozzy has done since then is anywhere near as good as the first 2 albums...... although I did like Bark and Ultimate they sounded way more "L.A. Glam" than the first two records. I wonder what Jake E. Lee is doing these days?
@leftyzappa Dude, its ok, Rudy and Tommy were credited for the original recordings in 1981 but it was Bob and Lee who actually played on this album! THEN Bob and Lee's parts (which they never got credit for anyway) were re-recorded by Robert and Mike in 2002....the whole thing is one giant mindfuck!
@blizzarddiaryozzy Wrong! Both Daisley and Kerslake did get credit for their work. Hell, they wrote most of the music and lyrics! Check out the old record labels and you will see their names. That's is what all the fuss has been about for almost a decade now - Ozzy cheating out them of their royalties. There must have been some pretty damned fine print in that contract because this is a no-brainer to me!
@frontenginedragsterd Yeah im a big fan,but some how i didnt notice the differnce it the newer one i've got. Well this is better but i can live with the one i do have because it's better than nothing right.
@domzilla90 You can't hear the difference in drums and bass? I could care less that Ozzy and Sharon won the lawsuit - I think it's a crying shame that they scammed Lee and Bob the royalties they deserved. You want to give Ozzy money...that's your deal - I won't give him a single penny after that.
@DickLodge68 Preach it brotha. Bob and Lee got screwed by Sharon Osbourne. It's time for Ozzy and Sharon to do the right thing and take care of the people who have taken care of them.
@markcamp1 It's all over and done with. The legal suits are done. Several years ago, Daisley's attorney contacted me about the class action suit. It's done. My point is that people should buy the original, if they can. The legal battle is over...now it's just about respect and enjoy the true recordings - which are great!
@DickLodge68 That's not the impression I get from Bob in his reading his blog and Facebook postings/associations on the subject. Do you have any documentation/references to back up your claim that lawsuits had been settled and that Bob and Lee are satisfied? Until I hear otherwise, my view is that Sharon needs to step up and do the right thing...and like your post says above - I ain't giving Ozzy and Sharon a goddamn dime of my money until I know that has been put right.
@markcamp1 A few repeals to the lawsuits were settled. On all counts Daisley/Kerslake lost. It's all in the small print....ugggh. As far as I know, it's perfectly legal for THE OSBOURNES to do as they wish. That class action suit was years ago...done and over with. BUT, you can choose yourself. Even though they don't get royalties, it's UP to YOU!
@markcamp1 Look...I don't have "documentation nor references".....the class action suit was years ago, and honestly, I have enough of my own paperwork. I signed the class action suit years ago....Daisley lost. If you have some new action in counsel, I'm willing to look at it. But if you want some proof that this actually happened, get lost.
there's no doubt about it. what ozzy did to daisley and kerslake is unforgiveable. rhoads must be turning over in his grave that ozzy treated the musicians, the guys who handed ozzy his solo career on a gold plate ...this way.
$haron didn't want to pay Kerslake and Daisly any more royalties, why else?! She asked Ozzy what he thought about re-recording the drums and bass; he just mumbled something incoherently then asked who the attractive young girl was in his home and what happened to his youngest son, Kelly?
This album is one of the greatest in rock history. It's in my top five of all time, and I think more songs than "Flying" and "Over" should be on classic rock radio. Ozzy big hits were special and deserve the attention but a song like this was such a beutiful, melodic, amazing harmonies, amazing bass (listen to the subtle riff at the end) and such a soulful, beautiful guitar solo. In my opinion Diary Of a Madman is the best hard rock album every made. I bought this album in 1981 and still get the chills when I hear songs like this.
This is such a cool song, it rocks. Ozzy singing about a serial killer and the little dolls he collects....Great work to all the original artists on this one.
This drum intro sounds waaaaaay better than the 2002 version (which I have)... If only I stumble upon the original version I'm gonna buy it. The shouldnt have messed with the original tracks.
correct me if im wrong but im sure i read that the intro drum part was added with the new bass lines, that the song started with the guitar riff. if this is true how is this the original drums/bass?
@KustomKulture420 I don't think any version strayed from this one. In a recent interview Bob said they did it live except the vocals. Now THAT is amazing.

Nice. One of the best songs on Diary of a madman. I have all of Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman with original bass and drums saved on my computer. Hope to post everything soon!
Good stuff in your info tab. I just listened to two other versions of this tune and thought - this sounds nothing like the song I used to rock out to in the 80's. "Diary of a Madman" was def. a kick ass "album". Damn I'm glad I kept my vinyl collection...
I would buy the LP record it on tape the first time it was played then proceed to wear the tape out actually 28 years later i still have the tape it dont sound so good now though
I agree thouse, this original is far better. Though I never smoked weed in my life, I also played this album a lot, and still have it and it is in pristine condition still. I never touched the surface of my albums, and would allow only a few people to touch my albums, lol. I love vinyl.
i'm 41 i remember smoking weed in the early 80's and listining to this album 24/7 by far the est metal album out there a masterpiece! RANDY IS THE MAN! and the new version of bass and drumns sucks!!!!!!!!!!! he's right when i first heard it i thought it was a bad outtake! the origianl is so much better, what was ozzy thinking to allow that! randy would not be pleased!
i've always thought of this song as the "dark horse" from Diary, i love it but nobody else does! such a hard and driving song, it reminds me of I Don't Know from the Blizzard album
i just wish Randy had gotten a chance to absolutely rip this up live
yes the guys sounds like he is stubbling at the very beginning. Just doesnt flow smoothly as this version. I remember hearing this when Sharon first cut the original members out. Totally sucked. Never understood the reason behind it nor did I find an article to inform me on it. I knew it was for royalty reason though
They are "that" shallow. The point? So that they could offer a "new" version that they could hopefully in much greater numbers than the original was selling years and years later.
No, if the re-record was to get more record sales, they would have advertised it as such, the original release of the re-record had no indication that it was a re-record, fans figured it out themselves and forced $haron to advertise it as such and release who the new musicans were
Hmmm...you have a point. I still say that are 'that' shallow, perhaps more shallow than any humans living if they were willing to rape Randy's memory for generations to come.
@backtoegypt Wrong, they were rerecord because of a lawsuit about unpaid royalties to Bob Daisley and Lee Kershlake. Rerecording with studio musicians and not using the originals means no royalties have to be paid.
@ashevillenchomes Uh, no, I'm not wrong. You aren't wrong though either. They did it to avoid paying royalties yes but they also hoped to increases sales of these releases because they were offering somethng 'new' and 'different'. If their goal was only to avoid paying Daisley and Kerslake, they could have simply taken the cd off the market completely.
@backtoegypt They hoped to increase sales of a classic recored? Let's not forget that it is one of two studio albums that Randy Rhoads played on. Are you really that naive? But hey if you wont to believe Sharon thats fine. Because Sharon is not going to say hey everybody we are redoing three Ozzy classic's so we wont get sued anymore. But wait she did not say anything at first. Hmmm, it was not until fan backlash. As for taking the cd off the market I know you are on the crazy train now.
@backtoegypt it wasn't about selling more (sorry, maybe i missed part of a dialogue here...), it was about not paying royalties to the original bassist bob daisley and drummer lee kerslake. so sharon decided the best way of saving money was to re-record over a CLASSIC ALBUM with rob trujillio and (i think) mike bordin who both signed a no royalties, one time fee contract. the most bullshit move in the history of rock and roll, and a slap in the face to randy rhoads on top of that.
This is IMPORTANT...thank you for the info and posting this. I clicked on the wrong one awhile ago (the crappy redo version) WOW was it bad. You rock and thanks again. I can't believe they raped the albums like that.
Original bass and drums or GTFO.

and the estate of the late Randy Rhoads. No other reason

i've always thought of this song as the "dark horse" from Diary, i love it but nobody else does! such a hard and driving song, it reminds me of I Don't Know from the Blizzard album
i just wish Randy had gotten a chance to absolutely rip this up live
tpain2345 3 years ago 5
ive actaully always thought this to be one of the best off Diary. I love Kerslake's drum intro (which by the way was killed by the re-recordings)
blizzarddiaryozzy 3 years ago
yes it was, ozzy and $haron should stop being difficult and just re-release the originals
thanks for putting this up btw, its been a while since i've heard the originals :)
tpain2345 3 years ago 7
Yeah man every transition in this song kicks your teeth in!

@blizzarddiaryozzy
yes the guys sounds like he is stubbling at the very beginning. Just doesnt flow smoothly as this version. I remember hearing this when Sharon first cut the original members out. Totally sucked. Never understood the reason behind it nor did I find an article to inform me on it. I knew it was for royalty reason though

@barroombrawler72 All in the name of money, very sad. Screw the guys that saved Ozzy's ass after Sabbath.

elvisdustin 3 years ago
I don't think they're *that* shallow...but then again they did destroy three albums. What exactly was the point in remixing Bark at the Moon?
CryptKeeper2929 2 years ago 2
They are "that" shallow. The point? So that they could offer a "new" version that they could hopefully in much greater numbers than the original was selling years and years later.
backtoegypt 2 years ago 2
No, if the re-record was to get more record sales, they would have advertised it as such, the original release of the re-record had no indication that it was a re-record, fans figured it out themselves and forced $haron to advertise it as such and release who the new musicans were
blizzarddiaryozzy 2 years ago
Hmmm...you have a point. I still say that are 'that' shallow, perhaps more shallow than any humans living if they were willing to rape Randy's memory for generations to come.
backtoegypt 2 years ago
I got the original version on CD
8trackworld 2 years ago
@backtoegypt Wrong, they were rerecord because of a lawsuit about unpaid royalties to Bob Daisley and Lee Kershlake. Rerecording with studio musicians and not using the originals means no royalties have to be paid.
ashevillenchomes 1 year ago
@ashevillenchomes Uh, no, I'm not wrong. You aren't wrong though either. They did it to avoid paying royalties yes but they also hoped to increases sales of these releases because they were offering somethng 'new' and 'different'. If their goal was only to avoid paying Daisley and Kerslake, they could have simply taken the cd off the market completely.
backtoegypt 1 year ago
@backtoegypt They hoped to increase sales of a classic recored? Let's not forget that it is one of two studio albums that Randy Rhoads played on. Are you really that naive? But hey if you wont to believe Sharon thats fine. Because Sharon is not going to say hey everybody we are redoing three Ozzy classic's so we wont get sued anymore. But wait she did not say anything at first. Hmmm, it was not until fan backlash. As for taking the cd off the market I know you are on the crazy train now.
ashevillenchomes 1 year ago
@backtoegypt it wasn't about selling more (sorry, maybe i missed part of a dialogue here...), it was about not paying royalties to the original bassist bob daisley and drummer lee kerslake. so sharon decided the best way of saving money was to re-record over a CLASSIC ALBUM with rob trujillio and (i think) mike bordin who both signed a no royalties, one time fee contract. the most bullshit move in the history of rock and roll, and a slap in the face to randy rhoads on top of that.
loknloll 1 year ago
@loknloll Trujillio recorded that shit then went to
try and hide behind Metallica? Mike Bordin - I have
faith no more in you man!
Why didn't they just go in the studio and totally
fuck up and redo it all with Zak Mild on g-string?
yourunclehank1 1 year ago
@yourunclehank1 hey, they did what most of us do. listen to the boss, and do your job. it sucks, and trujillio has at least expressed regret.
