@anhik he was originally a general from Heaven and got punished as a river demon after breaking something (a lamp or jewel)... but he's known as Sha Seng which means Sand Monk.
It was said that when this show was on in some regions, the theft rate decrease dramatically, simply because the thieves were all home waiting for the show!!

Sun Wu Kong - the monkey, the first disciple, the most powerful one;
Zhu Ba Jie - the piggy, silly and lazy, the 2nd disciple;
Sha Wu Jing - another monk, 4th disciple, prudent and diligent.
