The clunky controls are what makes it survival horror. If you could control the character like any other shooter, you wouldn't feel handicapped and out of place in the game, but rather having a blast and a piece of cake, eliminating the unnerving feeling it's supposed to give you.

@Grippli78 If you have an Xbox 360 or PS3, you can download it from their game marketplace. Yes, a download isn't as satisfying as a hard copy on disc. Just make damn sure you don't accidentaly delete the download. The Xbox 360 & PS3 version is a hybrid... It's the Gamecube version of the game with the PS2 extras added on. And, this is the best version of the game. The game has never looked so pretty. I have the 360 version, but I don't think it matters which of the 2 you decide to get it on.
@armyevil The old PS1 games controls were awful. And, the games were boring. The camera angles were awkward. In the old games... It was about as exciting as watching the monitors of security cameras setup in hallways. People go through doors, and walk through halls. Oh, you get to shoot a zombie every 45 minutes. RE4 is the greatest RE game ever. Capcom says they'll never return to the play-style of the original PS1 games. RE6 is supposed to be double the intense action as 4 & 5.

You have turn your character in place by rotating the analog stick or D-pad. Watching your character spin in place in order to face the desired direction. Making it as robotic as you can get. When running, the characters can be turned without always stopping, but the turning is like driving a car with fucked up steering.

@armyevil I don't play the old games. Have played them, don't care to now. Survival Horror shouldn't mean waiting on your ass for something interesting to happen. I don't think many people got shook up about running down several halls and walking through several doors, awaiting something interesting. This ain't survival horror, it's an action game with horror elements.
Compared to the older installments in the franchise, Resident Evil 4 is proberly the least scary version besides Resident Evil 5, and you can shoot the villagers without thinking about ammo unlike RE 2/3.
Resident Evil 4 is my all time favorite though, played it 3 times through on my GameCube and my PS2, and I got a Leon costume, so to anyone who haven't played this game, you are really missing one of the best games ever made.
RE4 still retains many core RE elements; puzzles, typewriters, exploration, and in the (too short) Ashley Graham level, true hardcore RE gameplay. Honestly, they should have made you survive without weapons as Ashley much more than that short level.
4 & 5 May seem similar but 4 has alot more character and its certainly much more creative and bold than its successor (there's alot of experimentation in terms of level design and gameplay in RE4).
I have yet to complete the game(I have started to play it about two weeks ago on my PS2),and I'll have to agree with josephSwall. The game looks easy and boring in this video. How can you be afraid of something you can kill in one instant?

@katlej It's not. The 360 & PS3 version is the Gamecube version with the PS2 extras added on. The reason why the original Gamcube version might appear better to the eye to some, is because not being in HD, the texture flaws are not magnified. But, if that HD factor bothers you, you can always turn the HD off on your system, or play it on a standard definition tube set. While HD does make certain texture flaws more noticeable, the overall effect of the HD, makes the game look great.

The game isn't that scary. I'm only 10 and I beat the wii version 4 times. to be honest, the first time i played the game i was a little scared. alfter you beat it once, you know what to expect so it is not scary. :)
This game isn't really scary outside of a few select enemies, when I say that I specifically mean regenerators. Dear God has that breathing haunted many a nightmare that I endured after I first beat this game
Hmmm...I'm not sure why people consider this the pinnacle of the series. I can't find definitive sales numbers but I'm pretty sure a lot of my sources indicate that RE2 is still the best selling RE game. Plus gamecube REmake was superior to this game. The over the shoulder aiming just overcomplicated the controls. It's not scary when enemies charge up to you and then stop so you can aim at their heads...
@yoshiman9385 well, its 20 dollars on xbl and psn assuming you have one of those two consoles. the only crappy part about it is the fact it was marketed as an HD rerelease, yet the only difference is the enhanced textures. its still a great game though. you should go get it.

Thank you for not being a total fan boy like many people do! Yeah, the old RE games we're awesome but also extremely annoying due to the awful controls. Fan boys are probably mad that this superior game made the franchise accessible to everyone, when they should be happy instead

I know how much acclaim this game gets. I see it under the 30s of top games of all time. The only game Ive played that has horror aspects was Heavy Rain. I fricken loved that game. @pokemonizkooolio if you have a wii get that version, it has the gamecube graphics and the PS2 extras but the wiimote makes aiming sometimes too easy since you can aim before drawing your gun. the game should be low prised now aswell so get the game its worth it.
@pokemonizkooolio Yes on gamecube. The wii version has some plus sides like some extra content but is censored in some areas, gamecube version probably is cheaper and feels right on the controller.

Personally, I both this game the same day with Dead Space (RE4 was the WII Edition) and I remember not liking it at first but then really got sucked into this world. I remember just running among the villagers at first because I wasn't familiar with the controls let alone with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.
I bought this game for pc with a magazine,another game(project nomads,which is a good game) and a movie(a shitty movie,but who cares,I bought the magazine only for re4) and a extra 8gb dvd with programs and some other mini games for only 6€! the game is perfect,old bu still perfect,the graphics are AMAZING,the gameplay is perfect,the atmosphere is perfect...everything about this game is perfect! I love it!
@dmzle That was the Handcannon and you get it by scoring 60,000 or more on every level, with every character in Mercenaries. It doesn't come with unlimited ammo at first though, you have to upgrade it.
Anybody who says that games like vanquish are a weak japanese attempt at cashing in on the popularity of western shooters seem to forget the importance of this game. I doubt gears of war would've played the way it did without the influence of RE4. As far as I can remember RE4 popularized the "over-the-shoulder" camera angle that you now see in most 3rd person shooters.

The game isn't that scary. I'm only 10 and I beat the wii version 4 times. to be honest, the first time i played the game i was a little scared. alfter you beat it once, you know what to expect so it is not scary. :)

This game isn't really scary outside of a few select enemies, when I say that I specifically mean regenerators. Dear God has that breathing haunted many a nightmare that I endured after I first beat this game

Hmmm...I'm not sure why people consider this the pinnacle of the series. I can't find definitive sales numbers but I'm pretty sure a lot of my sources indicate that RE2 is still the best selling RE game. Plus gamecube REmake was superior to this game. The over the shoulder aiming just overcomplicated the controls. It's not scary when enemies charge up to you and then stop so you can aim at their heads...

@yoshiman9385 well, its 20 dollars on xbl and psn assuming you have one of those two consoles. the only crappy part about it is the fact it was marketed as an HD rerelease, yet the only difference is the enhanced textures. its still a great game though. you should go get it.

@pokemonizkooolio In my opinion PS2 version is better, because after you pass through the game you get to play as Ada and see the story through another perspective... GC Version had better graphics but you couldn't play as Ada...

Thank you for not being a total fan boy like many people do! Yeah, the old RE games we're awesome but also extremely annoying due to the awful controls. Fan boys are probably mad that this superior game made the franchise accessible to everyone, when they should be happy instead

I know how much acclaim this game gets. I see it under the 30s of top games of all time. The only game Ive played that has horror aspects was Heavy Rain. I fricken loved that game. But also being a 3rd person shooter lover with Uncharted and a few other games, should I get this game? I feel it cannot be missed. If anyone tells me yes, also tell me what platform. Thanks:-)

@pokemonizkooolio if you have a wii get that version, it has the gamecube graphics and the PS2 extras but the wiimote makes aiming sometimes too easy since you can aim before drawing your gun. the game should be low prised now aswell so get the game its worth it.

Early 2005??? This game came out in 04' on GameCube... The PS2 version came out in 05'. Reviewer needs to learn is games better.

RE4 was the last resident evil game that was actually scary. RE5 was not scary at all to me, and it was pretty much nothing but action and no scares.

Personally, I both this game the same day with Dead Space (RE4 was the WII Edition) and I remember not liking it at first but then really got sucked into this world. I remember just running among the villagers at first because I wasn't familiar with the controls let alone with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk.

I bought this game for pc with a magazine,another game(project nomads,which is a good game) and a movie(a shitty movie,but who cares,I bought the magazine only for re4) and a extra 8gb dvd with programs and some other mini games for only 6€! the game is perfect,old bu still perfect,the graphics are AMAZING,the gameplay is perfect,the atmosphere is perfect...everything about this game is perfect! @dmzle That was the Handcannon and you get it by scoring 60,000 or more on every level, with every character in Mercenaries. It doesn't come with unlimited ammo at first though, you have to upgrade it.

Anybody who says that games like vanquish are a weak japanese attempt at cashing in on the popularity of western shooters seem to forget the importance of this game. I doubt gears of war would've played the way it did without the influence of RE4. As far as I can remember RE4 popularized the "over-the-shoulder" camera angle that you now see in most 3rd person shooters.
