I remember learning this in a psychology class. Basically, it has to do with your subconscious mind and why it thinks you're doing what you're doing. I mean, if you do a puzzle just because then it's easier for you to believe that you enjoyed doing the puzzle because otherwise why did you spend all that time and not stop yourself?
On the other hand, if you are paid to do the puzzle your rationale is "Well, I was paid to do it so that's why I did it. If it was fun they wouldn't have had to pay"
Remember that an hour of your time alone is pretty valuable. That hour is probably better spent doing a less enjoyable task for several times that amount, if you really need it. A real job is a better idea for getting yourself out of debt.

2) Make them fill out a semi-complicated time sheet to keep track of how much they're playing.
3) Pay them small bonuses (5 cents?) for special achievements recognized by the game. The achievements in a game are often the most tedious to obtain and the added payment would highlight this.

If you want to speed up their disinterest, cut their pay to 75¢ or 50¢. Once they have accepted the idea of being paid $1, a pay cut will make the activity even more distasteful to them.
Oh yeah, and make sure they turn in a full hour to get paid. If you do this, they'll be watching the clock and hating the last few minutes, especially if they have something else they want to do. Everything becomes less enjoyable if you have to do it beyond your natural interest.
A test with kids that paint or sing showed that if the parents rewarded them AND pushed them to do it they were less likely do continue doing it. You should pay them and push them to play games to make them play less.
i used to do yard work for my mom for years, and now she started to pay $10 an hour for me and my sibling and his friend to do it, and all of a sudden, no yard work is being done haha - backfired in my mom's face lol

The other problem is that there may be a natural cycle in kids as they become more or less interested in certain activities. You are not accounting for those variables. Yes, they will lose interest, but probably would lose interest anyway.

Well the kids will be counting the minutes when they play the games and not really enjoy the games. They may want to play it for a couple more hours to get the couple more bucks, but they'll just spend that time waiting for the money, and not enjoying the game.

I'm thinking that you won't reduce their intrinsic motivation UNLESS you require that they complete specific tasks. The other problem is that your experiment could backfire and they might start expecting rewards for not doing things that annoy you in some way...

Well the kids will be counting the minutes when they play the games and not really enjoy the games. They may want to play it for a couple more hours to get the couple more bucks, but they'll just spend that time waiting for the money, and not enjoying the game.

Great experiment! I agree with you. The money will lessen the video games in the long run. Very similar to the idea that you should never take a fun hobby and turn it into a job.

i don't think this will work :(. i think it would depend on what video games they're playing, though. what games DO your kids play?
if the games are addictive for more than just the game (like if there are social rewards in games like WoW), then this is like paying someone a dollar for each line of cocaine they do.

I love this. One of my teacher friends reccomended I read Alfie Kohn's Punished By Rewards, and I haven't gotten around to it yet, but after watching your video and reading your doobly-doo, I'm guessing that it is probably along the same lines of Drive. I'm really interested to see how this works.

Well you don't pay me to watch your video's and I'm still watching. I'd probably stop if I were paid to do it.....it would be a chore then rather than something I do for fun. I think the idea will work better though with adults who find their time valuable.
