The bowed Indian instruments in the song are called Dilruba. There's a similar instrument in "The Inner Light" called the Esraj, although the specific type used on that song is called a Tar Shenai because of the horn mounted on it. The drums are called Tabla.

Miss ya. Miss Vegas. Ok, maybe we dont miss Vegas.
I saw this show at The Hilton the same night Penn Teller saw it. He was there in line and a lot of people were getting their picture taken with him.
Anyways, the show was unbelievable! I never thought Sgt. Pepper could be done live but Cheap Trick pulled it off. My hats down to them. Will I see it again? Over and over again! Did I cry, too? Oh YEAH! The part with the sitars, Robin's performance, the orchestra, the voices... this show will simply send shivers down your spine!
Some can't tell if Penn liked the show or did not? Did I listen to the same Penn Clip as you. This guy Penn is not a reverent gentle--mouthed guy, but its clear he LOVED it. I saw this show, then came back and saw it again. Penn is saying (and me too) he was genuinely surprised. To say it was "good" simply does not say it.
I suppose Penn, like everyone else, is entitled to his opinion, but what that opinion is, I don't know. I cannot tell if he is applauding it, or bashing it.
I'll tell you my opinion, which is worth just about as much as Penn's. My wife and I saw it on the 2nd of 9 nights (Sept 14),
3rd row dead center.....Summed up in one word, it wat GREAT! The highlight of this years Las Vegas trip.....for me anyway.
One more note...In 8 years of coming to LV, we have never seen Penn & Teller.
Cheap Trick is doing a great job of providing great entertainment for people who want it. Only if nobody came would it would be stupid and there would be no reason to do it.
Ringo was not a "great" drummer by any means, but he was exactly what was required. With three visionaries in the band (4 if you count George Martin which you should), the last thing you needed was a strong-willed Neil Pert-esque drummer who wanted radical rhythm shifts. Ringo probably defused a lot of tension and mostly kept his ass out of the creative process.
Not quite sure why this would motivate tears, but what the heck.
@ezmorningrebel Penn's a musician? I don't think so, really. Not that he didn't do music (his version of singing) on the Bongos, Bass and Bob record, but I don't think he's a musician at bottom. I think nobody who isn't a drummer or works with one daily can really appreciate their work.
I think you may have the same feeling if you see Brian Wilson do "Smile" live. Never meant to be done..album was only recently finished after being shelved in 67.
The reason for Cheap Trick doing this show is to celebrate the Beatles and do something that was said can't be done. John Lennon said something like, Sgt Peppers can't be done live. The instrumentation is too complicated. Cheap Trick is awesome.
I'm one of the biggest Beatles fans I know, and I'm not deluded enough to think Ringo is a great drummer. He isn't, but the Beatles was a great band and they made great music. Penn's more of a musician than we/I expected. He knows his stuff. I don't think it's that he doesn't like Ringo as a person (neither do I)...but lets not kid ourselves either.
I think he was using the term "stupid" and "unnecessary" in good terms. Almost like insanely creative to tackle the project, for nothing more than the love of the music and the Beatles.
I'm sorry. Are you making a statement that Cheap Trick could make more money by filling up a stadium? Or are you saying that they can't fill up a stadium, cuz, my friend the concert that Penn is talking about was sold out every night, for nine nights!
He was saying that Cheap Trick could make more money playing by filling up a stadium and playing Surrender rather than what they did with Sgt. Pepper.
Gee, I've been doing stupid shit for years and even got kudos from Roger Dean at one point on a drawing I had done, but certainly have not gotten anything out of it but my self indulgent satisfaction in knowing that I can do it myself. I sadly often wonder if that makes me a selfish bastard because of my concepts and actions or an artist because I'm poor??? Ooooh, a blank canvas... excuse me... ;-))
I love Cheap Trick. To be fair I can't help but love them because they are from my hometown Rockford, IL. They are the one of few things the city is famous for... lol
