  • @AyeDunnoJoe

I bet he stands still when he orgasms.

  • omg, this is indeed great but Itzhak Perlman should teach Maxim Vengerov how to play Bach.

  • @Jozhx14 Not Perlman but Julia Fischer:)

  • @Jozhx14 That is a really ignorant statement. Perlman, of course the greatest violinist alive in many respects, litters his bach with deep, melodramatic vibrato on EVERY SINGLE NOTE! Hardly baroque and certainly not something he should "teach" Vengerov about Bach!

  • omg, this is indeed great but Itzhak Perlman should teach Maxim Vengerov how to play Bach.

  • @Jozhx14 I thought it was the other way around?

  • 13 dislikes, not sure what you can dislike about it?. Just listen and enjoy....

  • He always looks like he's having an orgasm.

  • Its a wonder he can play that well in tune with his fingers sweating as much as they are. I can clearly see the sweat stains on his fingerboard from his fingers. Sweaty fingers make violin that much harder, so I have to give him even more props for that. Amazing performance, so tender, gentle and caring.

  • mix of vengerov and bach......i like more bach

  • so fucking sexy.

  • To put it bluntly, I'm sick to death of comments that attempt to rate one artist over another. I bet that most of the the people that that make these ratings have never and will never approach the level of artistry that they attempt to rate. Preferring one interpretation over another is one thing, but the obsession with "ranking" is ridiculous. Having a critical ear is great. Don't like what you hear-move on. A lot of these ratings/rankings are just preciousness.I bet Hilary is bigger than Bell.

  • @drewt3 I wholeheartedly agree. They're ALL top-level violinists. To all these supposed "critics," unless you're a top-level violinist yourself, just listen to the SOUND coming out of that violin, and enjoy it!

  • Пустой он. Музыкальный, но пустой. Жалко- такой виртуоз...

  • Надо же так испортить Баха:(

  • Puzzled at the top voted comment. No way is Bell a better virtuoso than Vengerov. He isn't even on the same planet as Vengerov technically and whats this" visually bo*****s? Bells hideous histrionics on stage look contrived whereas Vengerovs facial expressions and movements come from someone who is so clearly feeling the music. This playing is masterly, the way he just strokes the violin using bow speed and making it sing, Vengerov is quite simply King!!

  • Here is my thoughts on this video, as magnificent as ever sheer brilliance by a true virtuoso who possesses unparalleled technique and skill. Mr. Vengerov is equal to Mr. Perelman and Mr. Bell.

  • best or not, HE'S MY FAVORITE!!!!!!!!!!!!! look him up playing Ravel's 'Tzigane"

  • This is the Chicago Symphony, but not in Chicago... where were they? When is this from? Thanks!

  • I think he plays it too fast...you can´t feel really that what Bach tries to tell...to show....this unknown human desire that lives in any of us

  • I think he plays it too fast...you can´t feel really that what Bach tries to tell...to show....this unknown human desire that lives in any of us

  • Joshua Bell. Moves like a un-trained violinist. Vengerov to me is just terrible.

  • For endersv20, when you are brilliant you could be arrogant, everybody will excuse it!

  • wow!!! since the first second you enjoy it.

  • when you see the other violin players and musicians around vengerov.. they have about 65 years for each leg and they have played with many amazing players in that orchestra.. but then they look at him like they haven't never heard this piece.. this is vengerov

  • haha! he sounds all right, but I can't watch this without having funnies over his face!!! LOL [:

  • mister arrogant ... but an artist anyway

  • thank you. to trinitrotoluol-it seems to me that it was played on metal strings. i don´t know, if it could be possible to comment this playing, so good it is. serenissimo

  • great solo

im 95% sure he is using gut strings for this song

  • @246trinitrotoluene hes not.

  • @harmanbasskardon you're wrong

vengerov does use gut strings when playing baroque

  • he uses Evah Pirazzi all the time.

  • time?

  • Nice tender and pure sound, beautiful long lines

  • yes, I agree. This was the first video I saw of Vengerov and it seems to be a great representation of his sound.

  • seriously?? why did he have surgery? for what?

  • he damaged his shoulder whilst weight lifting

  • does he use a baroque violin here? sounds like it....

  • He uses the same strad that he always uses. He's so good at making the style of a certain piece come out :)

  • Ce type grimaçant ne joue pas du Bach mais de la bouillie pour chat!

  • nice interpretation. congratulations.

  • not allot of musicians realize how to interpret masters like bach, vengerov does, listen to double stops with allmost no vibrato, listen to the final bars, although vengerov could do perhaps everthing, he does the pure nescesarry in important phrases, he has a great heart for the sense of music, my compliments

  • I think it's a shame he cant play anymore. He is much like Nadal in a way...he has great talent but he forced himself so much (phisically) that his body couldnt take it anymore.

I personally like ppl who can make wonderful music with more echonomy of movement. After all, music is not interpretive dancing or any form of visual art.

  • what do you mean???? hes no more playing?????

  • He doesn't play anymore...he's given up basically...

  • are u kidding???? why has he given up???

  • No, he got a surgery in his hand, and he wont be able to play more.

He is now a orchestra conductor.

  • he's just on hiatus so he can teach and not focus so much on promoting his own violin career. idk anything about a surgery but im sure he'll be recording again soon........the sooner the better really

  • How terrible!!! I can't imagine what I would do in his place. Bravo for becoming a conductor!!!

  • It's the most awesome form of art ,is'nt it?

  • the thing I don't like about Bach, is his suspensions. Yeah, they sound neat and all...but he over uses them!

Thats probably why I like Bartok so well, he leaves you hanging when you don't expect it!

  • sin palabras si hilary es genial en bach peo vengerov es un genio generalpara el no ay barreras puff

    genial

  • I'm pleasantly surprised, his version is great! It's quieter, softer, yet sadder and more profound than the others. 5 stars!

  • too bad he's not touring on L.A anytime soon :(

I really, really want to see him live, again :)

  • Vengerov, awesome virtuoso! Ever a greatest violinist!!!!

  • I think Hilary Hahn has better inturpriations of Bach then Bell or this guy...but that's just my opinion. I like Hilary Hahn's sound better and the way she makes every note distinct. She is one of the best out there...also Perlman...I don't like him as much as I like her...again ppl this is all my opinion and if you don't agree that's your opinion

  • people like you just don't understand the nature of music... who cares how he looks on stage, people used to call heifetz cold on stage too. "Close your eyes and listen" is what Gitles said...

  • Yes and that's what itzhak perlman also said ... the amount of emotions and drama he has while playin is out standing ...

  • Mr, please please do not take the trouble to respond to maxhansenk, is a poor idiot who tries to play the violin and can not, it's a poor sort frustrated that could not get an autograph of Vengerov and still angry with him, therefore, this poor sick and insane amount of garbage written, stupid and meaningless crap that you and many of us read in all the channels where there are videos of Vengerov.

  • "Bell is able to fit the role of a virtuoso violinist better by how he plays (visually) and how he looks then Vengerov."

Ummm...If deaf people need Bach interpreted, then Bell is the man to call?

  • I would call them both! I don't care who plays cuz both kick ass!

  • Here are my thoughts: Bell is a great "solo violin and orchestra" violinist while Vengerov has amazing technical skill and does better with things like this.

Their interpretations are very different from each other and their strengths and weaknesses are also different. In terms of HOW they play, you can't say that is alike. Bell is able to fit the role of a virtuoso violinist better by how he plays (visually) and how he looks then Vengerov.

Let's just all agree that Perlman is best, okay?

  • @Mecinimi Bell cant be even compared to Vengerov, Bell most likely will never reach this level...

  • @vonlubcke No, he's not, Vengerov is becoming one of the best players that currently lives. I have seen both of them perform and Vengerov blew me away on a level that Bell could not. I still feel that Vengerov is outstandingly a solo violinist and shows his main talent through the technical demanding spots that many of the complete violin features offer.

Bell seems to fit better with the orchestral accompaniments, still. Vengerov is too much of a free spirit for an orchestra. ;)

  • @Mecinimi I thought vengerov quite playing violin I'm confused.

  • @StradAmatiViolin He was injured, I believe.

  • @zzzBaron I remember reading that there was something wrong with his wrist or arm I am not sure.

  • @StradAmatiViolin Well, regardless of what happened to him, which I know for certain it was something physical, it is the biggest shame. Vengerov is a genius in all respects of the word.

  • @zzzBaron upper right shoulder FUCKED. stiff bow arm. Pinchas said this years ago.

  • @StradAmatiViolin With such a puny, whisper of a sound, he might as well.

  • @Mecinimi mmm... no

  • @Mecinimi

My thoughts: plays well, but he looks like a dick ..

Do you need to make arrogant expressions in order to play the violin?

  • @andersv20 If you play this well I think you're in a rightful position to look arrogant.

  • @BenSutherlandFTF No it's particularly bad to be arrogant if you are indeed brilliant, cause it just ruins it even more. It doesn't even look like he's doing it for the concentration... I was just not convinced by his character, most people appear to dissolve themselves into the music, but he looks like he's doing it for the show. I guess it's a subjective opinion, but let's keep the discussion going, so I can click and then just listen while I type..

  • @andersv20 Vengerov does the same facial expressions playing the violin since he was a kid. It sticks, it's not being arrogant.

  • @jceiras

    What made him start?

Well, I guess there's no necessary connection from his facial expressions to his attitude, so I'll give in.

  • @andersv20 dunno, ask him /watch?v=0WhGrngr1xQ

  • @Mecinimi I would say Leonid Kogan is the most "complete" violin player I have ever heard!

Second place is split between David Oistrakh, Yehuda Menuhin, Michael Rabin and Jasha Heifetz.

Third place goes to Ferras, Neveau and Szeryng.

Perlman belongs with the "all time greats". But not up alongside Kogan. He is a wonderful player (Perlman) but he sounds like Rabin - and he does not play better then him (in my opinion). Maybe Perlman also belongs in "the split" second place.

    Hahn may join 1d.

  • @maxhansendk It is so difficult to truely "rank" any of these players.. they are all exceptional and their strengths differ slightly. Kogan, Menhuin, Heifetz and Perlman all top my list when I think of violinists. Can I say who is the best out of all of these gods? No, I can't. But.. there is just something about Perlman's playing. It speaks to me in ways the others don't.

This is my humble opinion though, it is by no means an absolute truth.

  • @Mecinimi Yes Perlman is great! But have you listened to Michael Rabin?

He has the same "sweet sound" as Perlman.

Sometimes I wonder if Perlman have inherited Rabins violin. It sure makes the same gorgeous sounds!

  • @Mecinimi The problem is that you have probably never heard Heifetz or Leonid Kogan "live".

Todays recording techniques are getting better all the time. Since Perlman has acces to that technology. He has an advantage.

To do compare violin payers you need to have peoples opinions. People who have listened "live" to those being compared.

I love Perlmans playing, but I also love Michael Rabins playing. And sometimes I prefer Rabin. They have the same "sweet sound". I think Perlman admired Rabin

  • @maxhansendk I understand what you are saying.. maybe my opinion would be changed. I've heard Bell, Hahn, Chang and Perlman all live (among many others). To rectify my statement a bit I will say that Perlman is the best violinist alive.. or at least I believe so. It is hard to judge anything more.

I swear I had seen a video where Perlman was talking about Kogan and Heifetz and he summed it up by saying "Heifetz is a tornado."

  • @Mecinimi

You know comments like yours really make me question whether people who are either blind or tone dead think that they actually are ok. I have nothing bad to say about Bell, but to make a statement that Vengerov is good simply because of his "amazing technical skill" is like saying that the sky is green. I am deeply moved by all of his performances and his passion and understanding of music. Your sound like a pompous snob, sir. Bell is better because he is prettier? what a joke!

  • @ikravchik You completely missed all of what I said. I prefer Vengerov over Bell completely, he is one of the best players of the decade. I'm not sure where you gathered those ideas..

  • @Mecinimi Lol wtf? I don't even like Vengerov and I know that Vengerov is way better in every way than Joshua Bell. There's a reason he was the world's best paid violinist during his career as a soloist.

  • @Mecinimi

I prefer vengerov's passion and energy over bell's calm attitude but I would agree that they are very different as musicians. :)

  • @Mecinimi szeryng is sort of...better

  • @Mecinimi ahahahaha, i so wanted to say cry about your Bell comments until I got to the end... right on...

  • ouvindo todos os harmonicos perceptiveis ao ser humano!!!!!

  • If only Bell could play the 1/100 of Vengerov !!

Vengerov has played monster pieces that Bell wouldnt play even in his wildest dreams !

  • thisone is not that difficult, but it is just his feeling and interpretation he can lay into it that makes it that good.

  • His interpretation is actually quite messy and wouldn't be acceptable in a college student. He only gets away with it because of his fame.

  • If only Vengerov could play the 1/100000000 of Oistrakh

  • its true that bell is not quite as strong a player technically as Vengerov but there is no piece that vengerov has recorded that bell would shy away from. Bell has plenty of technique to play any piece in the violin repertoire though maybe not quite as cleanly and precisely in tune as vengerov.

  • Excuse me ? Vengerov has recorded pieces such as Ernst Last Rose of Summer or the Echo sonata that Bell havent and coulndt have recorded... check them out..

  • Just to comment on the comparison earlier btw. joshua bell & Maxim vengerov. There is no doubt whatsover that Maxim is superior of them two. Joshua has a nice technique, yes, but his interpretations tend to be shallow, without insight! Maxim stands among the great violinist. Just compare the brahms's of both, it will not leave anybody in doubt

  • You're dead on--the Brahms says it all.

  • I agree, Vengerov stands among the great violinists of our time, but at the bottom. Joshua Bell is so greatly appreciated for some reason... people need to look into other violinists.

  • Probably cause, aside from being really good, he's also cute and played on the famous Red Violin soundtrack.

  • I agree. Josh Bell has more star appeal, being a bit movie star looking. I much prefer Vengerov.

  • yep yep the red violin is one of his big claims to fame.

  • and another thing is that americans do not look much further than the US. For them hilary hahn and bell are top violinists. on the contrary tho, what about janine janssen, vengerov, keleman, guiliano garmignola etc.

  • There are many neurological components that artists of higher caliber draw upon that are not fully understood--it involves drawing upon another area of the brain and often rolling the eyes and making facial contortions. I don't care what they have to do...I just enjoy the beautiful music

  • Here's lot of pointless comments...To me it's unique

  • why would he want to imitate some poxy american

    he works for charity

    so go fuck yourself, prick

  • aw how cute.

    u think ur cool :)

and i never said he was a bad person, retard.

  • So do you deserve it? just listen to the music and enjoy don't pay attention to the facial expressions!

  • i dont think maxim vengerov has anything to imitate bell in. i think it would be the other way around. bell has a much inferior technique than maxim vengerov. bell definately is overrated in the united states. but any real non-asskissing violinist would say bell has a long way to go to come close to vengerov. i mean listen to maxims tchaikovsky, sibelius, nielsen, shosty, prokofiev and so on.

  • both are worth seeing in concert, because they both play beautifully. it is a matter of taste, and i do love verngerov interpretaions, but i wouldnt enjoy seeing either one of them dance. i clearly understand that physical movement is a large part of music, but im not sure if they do it just for show.

  • That's a heck of a Strad....

  • I award this 3 ANNA MAGDALENAS FOR SOME LOVELY UNRUSHED GESTURAL PHRASING THAT FREQUENTLY HAS GOOD AFFECT AND HUMAN BREATH.

FURTHER THERE IS A PERFORMER'S POINT OF VIEW HERE...AS IT SOUNDS LIKE NO ONE ELSE'S VERSION OF THIS PIECE.

  • Brilliant performance.

  • the the guy who got downrated 6 times... this music is supposed to express stained glass cathedral theme, after all bach's a religious person, not a heart broken-ish song with too much vibrato. GOT THAT??! I can downrate u to -7... but since i'm nice...

  • Very interesting interpretation. Makes me feel as if I`m in a big church and hear the music coming straight from heaven. I think it`s good when Bach is played freely, without worrying too much about every note. But that`s just my opinion...:)

  • I listen to Perlman and Vengerov right next to each other and what i see now more than ever is that their styles for playing this are incredibly different from each other. I like Perlman's a bit better but it has a more modern sound I think, whilst Vengerov's interpretation has more of a baroque sound to it

  • Of course you see deep, true and sincere passion in face and body language!

  • wow, I truly expected to be offended by his Bach, instead I was ravished...He can get so wild in his interpretation of other works, I wasn't sure what I was in for with his Bach

  • Nice choreography

  • wait untill you hear yhe music

  • a eso se le llama ser solista

    !!

  • cretu, you are an idiot, just go away.take the music of some "Prelude non mesure" of L. Couperin, for example, and try to find YOUR ritm, your respiration.and then come here, and tell us,how it was.for me it´s too fast and too regular, too direct sound.but it´s beautiful!

  • sera porque es barroco y por eso no le mete mucho vibrato!!!!

  • to much liberty maestro Vengerov, you dont have ritm?

  • this is a man who loves and performs music beautifully.

if all you can comment on is his face, then you need to shut up and listen to his violin.

  • omg if u ppl say that he's not doing the facial expressions for show, that's ridiculous! Just take a good look at heifetz

(u can also tell that he does a lot for show, by just looking at his clothes 0.-)

i'd compare vengerov with lang lang and lang lang isn't THAT bad...

  • I'm not sure Maxim is fooling around either. I think the look on his face is one of genuine transport. anyone who can become so dedicated tot he violin has to be very moved by it at some level. When Maxim's cheeks hollow, I think he is savouring the notes almost. Thanks for the comment on the last note - beautiful! But he always plays like that :-)))

  • What a lot of twaddle is talked by some of these twerps on here. If you just _listen_ to this it is really beautiful and quite brilliant. The fiddle sings superbly. The phrasing is fantastically delicate. The overall musical effect is close to perfect. I love the incredible delicate up bow on the very last note. If execution is not perfect, remember this is an encore to a live performance. Easy, gentlemen, please. And the faces are not for show. He can't help them. Now go home.

  • try to listen to this with your eyes closed...

then tell me there's no emotion when vengerov plays this.

personally, i'm not a fan of vengerov's facial expressions either but his interpretation of the sarabande is beautiful, very much in style and full of emotion.

  • you must have extremely bad speakers or your just deaf

  • LOL!, no babe, i heard him live, his playing sucks mainly cos of his tuning, pure fifths are an abomination, take it from me, i have a decade of tuning pianos and organs behind me i know what an instrument in harmony sounds like... warm.. nt harsh like his...

  • um you dont know what u r talking about.... he plays the piece like its written.... he intonation is great.... the double stops are supposed to have that harshness to them... its Bach for goodness sake

  • I dont care if he plays it on his head, no violinist tunes properly... I can tell you off the start, arguing with me is pointless, because if you wish i will prove myself right.

(piano tuner, organ tuner, studied accoustics, worked with Bösendorfer and Steinway, long time volunteer with Renner) Instrument is supposed to sound in harmony, violins dont, because of pure fifths, detune it alittle bit, and youll have a violin that sounds warm, especially when hitting open strings...

  • He is right ...

  • He? Sorry mate, I don't have a willy.. Try she... :-)

  • Bach doesn't have to played with a warm sound. It's more important to be in tune and to have it resonate. However, the term "warm" is so overused now that it encompasses many meanings. Could you be more specific? Furthermore, many violinists suck at live performances. It's just not possible to bring recording-quality sound to the table every single time.

  • I disagree, i think Sarabande really does need alittle bit of warm, just a tiny tiny little amount. Be specific, ok, shoot the violin tuned inpure 5ths :-)

It's possible, i've seen it happen, and im very proud of the person who did this. No one will probbaly figure out what is it he has done :-)

  • I'm sorry, but its annoying when you say pure fiths.

It's PERFECT fiths, not PURE fiths.

That being said, Zhou9 is right when he says warm is overly used.

I believe that it is, indeed, the resonating.

By the way, way to BRAG in your first comment, tells a lot about your arrogant personality. A lot of people have great accomplishments, they just aren't assholes like you.

  • He is the best!!!

But I don't like some of his manners when he is on the stage.

  • all the showiness really cuts the effect of the music...It's like he thinks that all the faces will make up for the emotion

  • Awesome performance.

"Period" influenced performances like this always lose their power on video, as there is no microphone on the planet capable of reproducing the overtones that a violin produces. Vengerov is actually pulling a nice beautiful sound from his Strad. I'd rather hear this kind of performance than the constipated me-first interpretations done by "romantic" Bach violinists.

The only thing I'd like to have heard is a bit more emphasis on the 3/4 baroque sarabande dance beat.

  • not bad at all...Just close your eyes to get rid of the visual distraction. Beyond the buffonery he plays it rather well.

  • He generally sounds good of course but he plays this so light and yet he is playing it rather musical he sort of stays at piano it's not quite rich enough for my taste, not getting enough sound out of the instrument slightly weak causes me to get a little bored.

  • Nice sound. Never heard him play Bach before.

  • worst bach I've ever heard... Grumiaux's is so much better than this lame piece of shit

  • pick up the violin and play it yourself, then you'll hear worse. if you're gonna criticise, do it eloquently and with meaning, not by swearing and making no points. it IS a good performance, you just clearly lack the musicianship to know that.

  • hey, I'm just being honest!

  • Opinions are one thing, but substantiating them is more important.

  • This is music, and music is art. In art the only thing that matters is the personal opinion, you can not determine which music is better than another, or what musician is better than another, perhaps, specifying only with technical terms, but in general the only way to determine who or what is better than another in art is based on your taste and your opinion. Greetings and sorry for my bad English.

  • BRAVOOOO! WELL SAID!!!

and your English is fine :)

    Greetings!

  • Oh my God I can't stand the Grumiaux version, so overly done, so much vibrato - he takes everything away from what is inherently great in the writing by trying too hard.

  • I dislike his showiness, but he sure plays that well.

  • those are all good interpretations, however Vengerov is doing something very unique in this performance. While others try to deviate from the original Bach performace, making it romantic and more dramatic, Vengerov embraces the Baroque style and plays this partita with upmost purity. Every single one of Bach's compositions were in dedication to the lord, and Vengerov truly shows it in this performance.

  • Vengerov is a poser; there are much better interpretations of Bachs Partita (Listen to Schneiderhan (best of all), Zehetmair, Mintz, Milstein, Lautenbacher, Szeryng, Chung ...

  • Not so bad...

  • Bach was EMO. People just doesn't listen to Bach anymore.

  • seriously drizzle.. these violinists need to listen to the music and not fixate on the facial expressions..

  • close your eyes and just listen

  • arrrrgh he is too EMO! it truly turns me off
