two absolute greats!!!! and not a surprise to me showing that Nusrat truly was transendental as well as Gabriel's spiritual soul....I have to get this!!!!
This version is a million times better than an exactly similar one with a bunch of amateur singers lining up distorting and meddling on the legend Nusrat Khan Saheb.
One of those amateur singers was apparently doing it on purpose to meddle Khan Saheb's Raag!! in an advent racist fashion! Gabriel smiled slightly as if he knew why she was screaming with her squeaky voice!
@3:16 ... priceless smile on Peter's face. NFAK had that affect on his true listeners. Peter was a damn good judge of talent and gift. NFAK was the best musician to ever be judged.
isn't there a longer version of this on the vh1 show? i would have sworn it was like 8 minutes long. either way, RIP Nusrat. Your voice and passion will be missed.
Did you know Michael Stipe called it his "favorite new song" after the performance?
King of Qawwal Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan Saheb doing what he does best.... Legend the likes of which wouldn't come again and etched in history till eternity
Not necessary to describe this, or the feelings it produces. I fall short. The most significant song, the best performances I have ever seen. Gabriel's music sounds at once ancient and futuristic.
mmmmm where and when was this recordes, the song apears on UP 2002, and Nusrat past away in 1997, so im confused about the originaliti of the video, i gess is an edition of various session videos
@cerojase This was from 1996 - live from the VH1 Honors show. Peter's intention was to have Nusrat record a fresh take for the album, but Nusrat passed away not long after this performance. Instead, Peter edited this vocal take to fit the album version.
@cerojase VH1 (like MTV but directed at adults, at least it used to be like that, in case you're not in the United States and are unfamiliar with VH1) used to have an annual "VH1 Honors" show where they'd highlight a singer's charitable cause. In 1996, Peter Gabriel was the one being honored for his work with The Witness Project, which was created in an attempt to distribute video recorders to people so that they could document injustices... quite ahead of his time... continued in next reply
@cerojase Peter had worked with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan on the soundtrack for Dead Man Walking (a Sean Penn movie). This was the very first performance of Signal to Noise in front of an audience. In my opinion, this is the best version of the song ever. This is my favorite song ever. It's so, so visionary.
There's a live version floating around the internet with Youssou N'Dour doing the guest vocals, he's a long time guest vocalist with PG, it's also quite good but just not as great as this.
Can somebody pls tell me the name of the Nusrat song (possibly remix) that has a huge drum section at the beginning, i think it's something with Michael brook but i'm not sure. Thanks.
This is from Peter Gabriel's "Up" release. It took 10 years to complete the album with greats such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan who are no longer with us.
This song took years to get onto a CD - just a tremendous track that needs to be played at full volume. Thanks PG for this spine-tingling composition supporting the Witness programme.
I am from India and I feel he is the one of the rare singer who holds the heart of even younger generation who love fast numbers.Once again this fusion is really a great stuff and I was really surprised to see this rare vedio clippings on youtube.Any way thanks for the one who post this. @toodance They were lucky to be friends with each other. Has nothing to do with talent levels or anything, they are just two pure spirits that were lucky to become friends.

@uzbekmann ... I advise you to go to this video version of the song entitled "Peter Gabriel Signal To Noise for Darfur" and maybe this will answer your questions (just search that phrase on youtube). Thank you for asking, more people should know the message PG is trying to convey. He's always been a fervent supporter and advocate for peace in Africa and bringing the atrocities of the world in general to the front stage.

Nusrat Fateh khan sahab was the first artist from subcontinent who mesmerized not only Pakistan
but wetern countries with his inimitable style of sufi quwali. When you heard him and saw him performing,
one could see the intensity and why they say in india that there could be many ways to connect with God
and one way is through music. Well it is sad that we lost such a legend so early but i think God wanted
to hear him sing and he called him to be with him. May his soul rest in peace
