  • You would have too be crazy too get inbetween a moma and her Cubs, especially when she's got a 12 gauge .

  • Model 65 is also a good option comes in 357 and can be found used for 300

  • I just bought a model 10-8 for IDPA and action pistol comp. one of the best smith and wesson revolvers ever built.

  • @HYBRIDCOMBATIVES I have the model 64-3, same gun in stainless w/new houge grip. Gorgeous and awesome. Works flawlessly. Maybe brian47374 should take notice of this

  • @jajmonSW38 indeed. There are few things as well constructed as an OLD Smith & wESSON.

  • @HYBRIDCOMBATIVES My gun was made in '85 by a relative. (ex USMC. retired police/armorer)

  • I work in the CIT Industry and I carry one of these, I personally love it, and I always know if I have to draw my firearm it will fire, it's a nice little peace of mind.

  • I bought a 10-8 a few months ago. I noticed a little side to side play where the crane meets the frame even in full lock up and also some end shake. How tight is your revolver?

  • @hostilerosstyle Me? mine is a tight as can be. I use it in IDPA and Action Pistol. If I could get my reloads faster (I use damn HKS speedloaders) I could keep up with most guys autos.

  • I bought a police trade in model 10 in 1994 from shooters world for around $75. They had dozens of them on tables all priced the same. You could handle and pick the ones you wanted. Wish I had bought a few more.

  • Its even cheaper if you get the spanish copy of it. ;D

  • Nice review... I got the same gun

  • The model 15-3 can use +p.

  • :) Pretty good video. I agree on relying on this gun as a HD weapon. Simple is good. Like Massad Ayoobb says: Better to have 6 for sure than 15 maybe.

  • why are people so paranoid about being robbed in their house, unless you live in the ghettos or rough neighborhoods, shit anit going to happen, people are living in fear, and going ape shit.

  • @ilikesuzuki Just a couple of years ago, an elderly couple was murdered in their house because two kids wanted to see what it was like killing someone. They lived in a good neighborhood and they were both brutally murderd. One of the teachers at my high school was almost killed when he was mugged and badly beaten over 50 bucks and he lives in one of the best neighborhoods in my city. Criminal activity dosen't follow a border.

  • @ilikesuzuki well that is a small, small percentage still.

  • @ilikesuzuki shit happen even in nice neighborhood. here the theives are from other places and rove around for loot. and this is a nice neighborhood. better safe than sorry.

  • @ilikesuzuki home invaders usually target nicer areas because there is generally more wealth in those types of areas

  • @17JH17 However, the 686 is a 357, while this a 38. Not trying to knock you or anything, but I'ld prefer the option of using both. Another die hard revolver is the Model 19, really tough and somehow sexy

  • can you get left handed

  • could you give me a link to the pistol?

  • is it reliable

  • Better to get 6 hits than 23 misses

  • Im sorryx i ment to tyoe $275 after shipping and ffl... I forgot the "2" somehow...

  • Im looking at one on j&g for $225. Gonna be $75 after shipping and ffl. Same barrel size as yours. Wooden grip.. how is this for conceal? It will be my first for conceal. I will take my test with it. im set on a revolver, no more then $300 (do to budget) but i think 2" bbl might be too short (less accurate, more recoil... You know the drill)

Whats or opinion on this? Should i look at somethig else in place of it?

  • No offense, but you do know that the .38 special is generally considered underpowered and is probably not the best choice for self defense, right?

  • I've got the model 13, which is a .357 magnum version of what you have. I love it!

  • The perfect house gun (No BS). I have a 10-5 with the pencil barrel, got it new. And yes!!! +P okay. I use winchester (WB) 130gr at the range. LSWHP 158gr +P house / carry load. If you need 15rds to take a Bad Guy out......... more range time is what you really need.

  • As a retired LEO I take advantage of any good deals on all Model 10s, as well as the alloy framed Model 12s I can find. I've got 40+ pistols to choose from, but a model 10 with 158 grain +P LSWCHP is my home defense gun. I'd encourage you to purchase a Ruger as they are becoming harder to find in good shape.

  • i have the exact same gun, same grip etc. except no holster wear, mine wasnt carried in a holster so its in about 95% condition. there is that little metal part behind the cylinder that i never really noticed till recently and i assume that's there to keep the cylinder from falling out?

  • in my opinion, this is one of the best looking handguns around.maybe im just biased because im a revolver guy but i think that that the only other handgun that can compare to it in the looks is the colt 1911. but thats just my opinion.

  • i got a model 10 that has less than one box through it in pristine condition for $300, good deal?

  • hey is there a way to put nite sites on the model 10

  • @Jtactoo Not really. This is a fixed sight, no frills weapon. you could color the front sight it you wanted. That said, learning to use the sights on it and you'll find it very accurate.

  • 0:28 "That's not considered about looks or anything like that" Dude, your S&W looks freaking awesome, who said it doesn't look good?

  • A Smith&Wesson revolver, sign of American manhood since 1852

  • Is this the heavy barrel model? And what grips do you have on your's?

  • best 38 ever made

  • Great practical review, Great reference to home defense use. thank you

  • Nice revolver. I like yours better than the earlier mod. 10's the thin barrel and weird looking 1/2 moon looking sight. I checked J&G but found they don't have the mod 10's now except for the parts guns. They did have mod 64 NYP .38's awhile back but they are gone also. The word must be spreading, these old cop guns are great values and superb quality. Better than the M.I.M. Smiths with the lawyer lock they are building now. I have a new mod. 642 and don't care for it at all.

  • A model 15 is a good choice as well.

  • @MOJONIXION bought a used model 15 with a 2" barrel about 6 years ago for only $150. I called S&W and read the serial number to them and they told me it was made in 1978. It still shoots straight and is reliable. New or used you can never go wrong with a Smith and Wesson.

  • I've got one of these for sale on Armslist.com (NC handgun page). Near mint condition!

  • My everything gun is a S&W M10-5 with a 4" pencil barrel, built in 1966. It wears a set of Ahrends boot grips and I carry it concealed in a Maters pancake style holster. It is my 6th S&W revolver, I prefer it to my Colts. They are so inexpensive, everyone should have one before they get a Glock or something several hundred dollars more needed magazines.

  • I shot my first gun today and it was a Model 10: It's amazing, It's a snappy fucker too, as soon as I turn 21 I'm getting one. I would consider it a great carry gun

  • I have a 10-6 with a hogue grip, super accurate and shoot +p through it all the time. It lives in a bed side holster with speer gold dots for home defense

  • @markpearson89, If I'm not mistaken the Texas Department of Corrections carry the Smith & Wesson Model 64. Take Care!

  • @millerusaf, I work for a Sheriff's Office in West Texas and I carry the S&W Model 10 revolver as my weapon of choice. Our department has gone to a Glock 40. I Grandfathered. The Officers call me old school and tease me a lot for carrying the Model 10. They say I have 15 rounds per mag. you only have 6. I just smile and tell them if you can't hit anything with 6 then you shouldn't be carrying a weapon. They just shake their heads and laugh. Best weapon ever made! Take Care!

  • I picked up a smith and wesson model 64 police trade in for my first handgun today. It's basically a model 10 in stainless steel. It came with pachmayr gripper grips on the gun. Haven't shot it yet, but already love it. Just want to say thanks for all your revolver videos. It gives me a lot of confidence in the guns ability and makes me want to practice so I can increase my ability to operate the gun. 350+tax for a gun older than me that will last longer than me. Enough said.

  • Hi Miller. How about the Ruger GP100 & the SP101? Would you consider these to be on par with the S&W model 10? Thanks. Sincerely, JAMES.

  • Awesome Video,

Great piece, from the looks and sounds of it that revolver for sure had some kind of trigger work done to it !! Great Piece !!

  • good vid, just ordered the ny1 mod 64 from J and G can you use + p ? I dont know the born on date thxs as yet

  • I like the old model 10's, but when i see these i get images of bobbed hammer, trigger overtravel stop, new sights etc.

I wish the Norwegian police would sell of theirs to us in the Norwegian pistol clubs, but they'll probably get scrapped. :(

  • what do you use for self defense for this .38? is LRN acceptable if you don't have hollowpoints?

  • just picked up the 3 inch model this week, great gun. although the one i got seems really old, the bluing was just beautiful. suits almost any task where the firepower of the autoloader or the power of a magnum is not required.

  • can this gun use +p's?

  • @Peidmonte89 Yes it can.

  • @millerusaf I was wondering what the model 10 was going to look like with Hogue grips as I just ordered a set for my model 10-14 about an hour ago from amazon .com. Good video.

  • @millerusaf Is there another revolver that is basically this one, but is .357 magnum? Because i'd rather have the ability to shoot .357 and .38

  • @Peidmonte89 actually no it cant...im not trying to disrespect millerusaf by contridicting him but you can not use +p's.

  • @lemmelime The model 10-8 can use +P loadings with no problem. You are thinking of older Model 10s with no dash or the pre-model number M&P revolvers.

  • @lemmelime You disrespect yourself.

Yes, you can use +Ps in a post '57 S&W numbered revolver. Read/study before you post misinformation.

  • @FaganRoberts nice comeback dumbshit you should cut out all other letters in your youtube name after the first three

  • @lemmelime You got called out for spreading misinformation on YT and this is how you act toward your betters?

Shame on you. You can do better than that.

  • @FaganRoberts you probably dont know jack shit to begin with. I was stating that because the dude who sold me the .38 at cabelas said you cant shoot +p's through it get a life fagan

  • @lemmelime Then why didn't you have the balls to state that in the first place? Do you often parrot information without checking the credibility of the source yet you persist in bringing it to the fore?

  • @FaganRoberts btw your probably the guy who in real life doesn't speak up cuz you'd get knocked the fuck down real quick

  • @lemmelime Your dreaming of what you wish to do to your betters and then you project this anger onto me. Nice spelling. What are you, going on about 13 years of age now?

  • @lemmelime You can load and shoot all the "+P" ammo you want in a model 10 (and even in pre model 10's back to the early 30's). "+P" .38's are still not all that "hot", and are incredibly low pressure compared to virtually every other handgun cartridge.

  • @BaronBergmann yeah i went and got some and liked them. my 10-8's just a good target gun ya know and what my girl has when im gone on business

  • @lemmelime Actually yes it can. If you have a model with the 5 frame screw set up you can handle up to +P, and if you have a later model like the 10-5 or later, such as millerusaf pointed out, can handle up to +P+

  • @lemmelime Any S&W handgun, revolver or semi auto made after 1955 should be able to handle +P. That's from S&Ws website.

  • @Peidmonte89 yes

  • can one of these handle +p ammo or is it too old?

  • This has to be the most perfectly ballanced 38 caliber revolver. It is very accurate and the weight perfect. I just got mine back from S&W. It needed a new firing pin. I can understand ,I did shoot the hell out of it at the range. But S&W fixed it for free and they even paid for the shipping. Two thumbs up for S&W.

  • On revolvers, S&W triggers can't be beat. Smooth and crisp.

  • wouldn't the equivalent be more like the model 64?

  • Model 10 firs standard 38 not 38 special?

  • I have a 10-14, basically the same thing just with the key lock system,I know the key lock sucks, but for $210 out the door, taxes and all, you wouldn't mind so much. The Ruger Security/Speed Six is a good one too. The Taurus Model 82 also is a good choice.

One would do well with any of the following three:

    1. S&W model 10 or derivatives

    2. Ruger Security Six/Police Service Six/Speed Six

    3 Taurus Model 82

Neither of these are expensive and all are reliable.

  • @chrismc410 did you get yours online?

  • @thehotsixer No. When I got mine, the dealer I buy from had a case full of them, about 20 Model 10-14s in it and had about five crates of 20 in the back. He was selling them for $200 a piece. After taxes and the state police check, was $210 all said and done.

  • Ruger is OK, but S&W is much better.

  • Nice gun, gotta love these old .38 Smiths.

  • Took my model 10 to the range this week. Shoots like a dream. Very accurate and has a light trigger pull.

  • Nice revolver. Can you safely leave the hammer down on a loaded chamber, or is it safer to leave an empty chamber?

Just bought one yesterday for $250 and can't wait to fire it.

  • Had a 5" S&W model 10 in the early 70s. Sold it because then there wasn't a place to use it. Fired it 1 or 2 days. Had it for several years. Wish I still had it!

  • How much do these usually go for used? And how about new? (sorry if you already mentioned this in your video)

  • Great overview of your S&W Model 10. I learned how to shoot with a Model 10, it was my Dad's service handgun. When he retired in 1995, he gave it to me. They are an awesome .38 revolver. Thanks for the video.

  • Hong Kong police are using it for self defense from 1992. i think this gun is safe and never fail, 6 rounds 6 chance.

  • Comment removed

  • Miller- What do you think of the .327 federal magnum cartridge? Do you think it will catch on like the .40 S&W did, or go the way of the .357sig?

  • Why didn't you just get a .357 magnum like the S&W Model 19? No doubt the Model 10-8 is a good gun, but I hardly see people using K-frame .38 special revolvers anymore other than a few select people.

  • Do they make a similar model in .357 mag?

  • It's called the Cylinder release latch. Also, since you asked, yes, I have a question. What type of safety is on that revolver?

    Thanks

  • @OldEphram1 It's a cam actuated hammer block safety. Although, the main safety is your trigger finger...lol.

  • @millerusaf did you get your mod.10 from J-G sales? also you said that the bore was in good shape, any pitting? is the rifling good and sharp? im lookin into getting one of my own and your reply would be greatly appreciated

  • @longrangeskeeter I purchased this revolver locally. The barrel has no pitting and the muzzle crown is in perfect shape.

  • I carried a Ruger Service Six as a duty weapon. Excellent weapon!

S&W model 10 & 15, Taurus Model 66 are excellent wheel guns also.

If you buy one, buy the model with the "Bull Barrel" like in the video, it loves +P+ ammo.

  • Hi Miller- Man- $300.00 for a security 6 - if it is clean MAN snatch it up!!!!!!! Thx. Sincerely,d JAMES.

  • Great info, and very cool gun! This is quickly becoming my favorite firearms channel.

  • @Chitown1911 Thanks. I appreciate that. :)

  • hey...the best way to duracote a revolver is to DIP the entire pistol in a bucket of duracote.gets all those hard to reach areas protected. my favorite color is crinkle green.

  • seen you shoot it and man you can kick them empties out FAST. Nice revolver man!

  • Well nice video! One more thing you should talk about speedloader!

  • I would not patrol through the house in home defense. I would create a preplanned defensible space, take up a position in front of which nothing lives behind which nothing dies... We used to train folks to get in position behind structural cover and then get on the cordless, get the 911 operator on the line and tell them that you are going to lay the phone down and for them to record and then start issuing commands... That way there is a recording of the event that can be subpoenaed...

  • model 10 is not rated for +p, model 19 is though. most likely no issues if you dont shoot them a lot, but why load something for defense that you cannot practice with?

    another great vid

  • @machinegunmana You can shoot + Ps in a S&W Md. 10 providing the gun was made after S&W's number system came out in the later 1950's. If you have a Md.10 made after 1957 you can shoot +Ps in it. So.... practice away!

  • @FaganRoberts the only older weapon that i would personally fire +p .38 in is a .357. I like to use all of my fingers for stuff. Shooting +p in a model 10 from 1958 is bad advice. the older weapons (and most importantly the older metallurgy) were never designed for the pressure levels available with modern, higher power, ammo. Just because you can get away with something for a while before the weapon fails, or it blows up in your hand, doesn't mean its a good idea, or safe.

  • @machinegunmana I like to use my fingers to shoot Plus P .38s in my 1972 S&W Md. 10. Per S&W websight and a plethora of other resources suggest it is OK to fire +Ps in model numbered S&W revolvers. This issue has been settled since the 1970's and there exists no reason at all to spread misinformation regarding +Ps in post '58 revolvers. I wouldn't fire a steady diet of hi power bullets through ANY revolver, but it's certainly won't blow up your handgun. Thats a myth that lingers on.

  • The beauty of this baby is in the simplicity and effectiveness. I can't find anything "ugly" about her man. :-) Thank you for letting us look in on your weapon.

  • How much would one of these or a security six cost?

  • @K1ll3rM4st3r Anywhere from 190 to 370 dollars (used). The Ruger Security Six models seem to be slightly pricer than the S&W model 10s (by about 50 bucks).

  • @millerusaf thanks for the reply im looking for a cheapish self defence gun my parents should invest in. we live more towards in the woods and would take the police a long time to get here.

  • @K1ll3rM4st3r No more than $250 for either in .38 only. Anyone who asks more that that is crazy in my opinion.

  • Great vid bro, Money Love.

  • I love revolvers very good review on that classic. Nobody beats S&W on their trigger pulls. Not even Colt IMO.I thought you did very well on your shooting vid as I said.

  • @Mr45Bullitt I dont know about that. my colt python's action is butter smooth.more so, than my s&w's. think the trick is lubrication of ALL parts.

  • @mrbeligos Hey Bill, how ya doin my friend? You're right about those Pythons. The triggers are done at the factory. They always did this on the Ptyhons as they were always considered to be the "elite" of the Colt line. A good lube doesn't hurt either though.

Bye the way, those grips came this morning. Thanks again Bill. I owe ya.

  • GET READY FOR THE DIVE!!!!!

  • when are you going to duracoat dude!

  • @derekgrebner87 ROFL!

  • @millerusaf

    coyote brown!!!

  • @derekgrebner87 who the hell duracoats a revolver?

  • Very good revolver. The S&W model 10 and the Ruger Security Six were the law inforcement work horses for many years. They were also very popular for self defense before the rise of the "wonder nines" in the 80's, which began the popularity of the semi autos. The 38/357 revolver was and is a good choice for a fighting iron.

  • I wish I could find one locally that cheap. I would definitely pick one up for that price.

  • Did you just wake that gun up from a nap?? It was in bed.

I like the petina on that old speaker.

  • A friend of mine run the armory for a local police dept. and he said that even after a trigger job you couldn't get a Ruger as good as most S&W's with a few rounds through them. I have both and both have had trigger jobs and the S&W is far smoother and lighter.

  • Buy the security six! Give into your temptation! Unless of course you need to pay bills...or buy groceries. Stuff like that..

  • I wish .38 special were cheap... in my area 9mm is about 9-10 bucks a box, and .38 is about $15-17... when you can find any.

    I love my Model 10, though. :)

  • Pick up the Security Six, you won't be disappointed, I've owned one for about 7 or 8 years, it was made in the mid 70's and is a Tank! Also the ability to use .357Mag is nice to! Great vid, please keep up the good work. Only real downside to the Ruger Security Six are the Grips. I was lucky enough to find bigger wooden grips off ebay. and be careful shooting +Ps out of the s&w model 10, i don't know if it's rated for it and could cause you some woes down the road. Take care!

  • @wgildersleeve Thanks for the info, I appreciate it, and yes the Model 10-8 can handle +P loadings wihtout any issues.

  • I am immune to this weapon system.

  • Classic!

  • Nice Gun!! Smith makes some great guns!

    Thumbs Up!!

  • I would buy one of those today if there was one available to me. Thanks for the review.

  • @glynn72 Go online, and search for one (J&G has some really good deals on them). When you find one, get it shipped to the closet FFL, and pay the shipping and FFL transfer fee (usually not that much).

  • a gunshop near me has stacks of these for about 200 bucks they also have tons of used beretta 92sand96s for 300 police guns are a good way to go

  • pretty nice lookin revolver, i think we may have one laying around here LOL

  • What do you think of tarsus revolvers?

  • @gamerguy1991 They are decent revolvers. I'd recommend looking for a used S&W Model 10 or Ruger Security Six, though. You can also save up another 100 dollars and get yourself something like a Ruger SP101, which is one of the best carry conceal revolvers out there.

  • @millerusaf Yeah I own afew Taurus revolvers but overall the Rugers are just built like a tank, like the GP100 if you run out of ammo you could use the gun as a blunt object without a problem, no joke. I actually saw an episode of deadliest warrior where they did a test of a pistol whip against the trigger guard of a 45 cold SAA and it delivered a lethal blow to the top of the test dummies head. How old is it though Miller, I noticed the firing pin is on the hammer so that's why I asked.
