@3dasylum - To use 1 monitor you need a KVM Switch (Keyboard-Video-Mouse Switch). Some are expensive, but my Biogear was $20 on sale and is working fine for me.
It took me less than 5 minutes to set it up. It's awesome !!! It really works smoothly, I saved money on unnecessary equipment and also works with different OS (I'm connecting XP and Windows 7 with different resolutions in two different laptops). :D
Yes, Computer A must select to Share it's keyboard/mouse. Computer B however, must be selected to be controlled BY computer A. Pretty simple. And I love it ^^
get "quick synergy" if you want to use a gui to set this up in linux. then just either type in the local ip addys and pick to share or use. if your using ubuntu quick synergy should be available in the default repositories.
You need to add another rule to it. You told it computer A is to the left of Computer B, but you never told it computer B is to the right of computer A. It knows how to go one way but not the other. Basically, take the settings you now have in it and make another line that is the opposite of the existing one.
do you need a web connection, or can this be done host laptop via say bluetooth or WLAN to second laptop. also could you use a router to control this (100mb secure stream) could someone PM me <3 x
Why the hell did you copy the binaries to your home dir? if you type echo $PATH you'll be able to see all the locations that binaries are looked for. i don't have a Mac but /usr/bin is a good guess (might need root to write here). you also didn't mention anything about setting it . echoing path in the console doesn't write it to a perm .bash_rc profile. so my way is easier. Please please please look a little more in-depth at what your doing cause you make CNET sound gash!
you can get VGA breakout cable which converts the external VGA Connect through the component video connections or the computer might have a 7 pin s-video connecter that comes with a break out cable and yea it has component cables as well.......or the t.v might have a vga connecter on the back usally hdtv's and Lcd's have them.
The one with the keyboard and mouse attached is set up as the server, the other is the client. On Windows, the interface has an option to switch between client/server. Use Google to find out more.
The screen name is the host name aka the computer name. On XP: Start - right click my computer - properties - Computer name tab. Vista: Start - right click computer - properties - look next to "Computer name". I think an IP could be used instead, but only do that if you use static IP addressing, not DHCP.
@gimpy530 this is good info but im using a pc with ubunto as the client and i cant get it to work... can you do a tutorial with ubuntu and windows7?... maby you dont need to i just keep getting an error message when i try to start it, it says "FATAL: unknown screen name 'my computers name' " how do i fix this?
No, RDC and VNC are pretty much the same (well, they work in a similar way). Synergy is different because it is designed to use two monitors with one keyboard and mouse, where RDC and VNC are primarily designed to use a single monitor, keyboard, and mouse. Opening an RDC or VNC session would take over part (or all) of your one screen, where as with Synergy both machines have their own monitor that do not interfere with one another.
Very nice! I am most impressed. I set this up between my windows 2003 server and my Windows-XP box. It works flawlessly. Except when your playing a game with menu's on either side it can become a problem if your mouse pops over to the other screen at the wrong moment. I highly recommend locking the edge of the screen that you have your hot-buttons on in WOW.
One does not simply use Synergy.

You are a MORON!!!!
You wasted all that goddam time with cute-sy littler theatrics when you could have been explaining WHERE one puts the ip address of the machines!

This is outdated. That address doesn't even exist anymore.

You don't have to do those mac steps anymore if you download SynergyKM for the Mac. It's got a better GUI with Synergy.
CNET has a good article by Rafe Needleman using it with a Mac/PC setup.

after the name do you have to type mac or pc?
sk8colorado 3 years ago
You should just have to type the name of the computer and that is it I think. Synergy doesn't really care what OS it is running on or connecting to.

ONE USEFUL THING TO KNOW:
Using the Scroll Lock on your keyboard locks you into that screen...

Damn, thought it worked with 1 comp, to drive serveral characters in WoW :CCC can´t do it with 1 comp :(

Yea that can be an issue, just use the scroll lock key to lock yourself into one screen
