@sypoth dude, ya do know its a parody of ww2 japanese propaganda films which were flag waving xenophobic racist cultural superiority shows as well right? so the whole racist stuff is a stylistic choice
@GTAFORME They're called Magatama and have been a part of Japanese culture for centuries. not everything revolves around that retarded mind suckingly stupid show Naruto and it doesn't take much digging to find something that's infinity better, even tangy pooper gurren lagan is better and that ones scraping the bottom of the barrel.
@madlexx The first one at the beginning (When the scientist is starting to attack) is omitted, but the second track (When they start attacking each other) thankfully is.
I'm wondering, I don't know why, but, how come this is the only anime that can have characters with Japanese accents and not other anime? It's just weird. But, still the animation is awesome!
Guys need to quit dissing anime of today. There are so many gems Japan still manages to pump out. Those kind of people always annoy me--the ones who snobbishly say that "x was sooo much better y years ago. The x of today is total shit."
This was my favorite bit of Robot Carnival. I love the bug-eyed madman and the kooky robot pilot team. Tenchiro (or is it Denjiro? I can't tell) is also my favorite.
2:07 - That's my favorite part. I love the long, long pan to the other robot, the guy going "What?!" And then the long pan back to the other robot.
In fact, this was probably one of my favorite of the Robot Carnival bits. Yeah, beautiful animation aside it's not perfect, but it came right after the long, dull, depressing bit with the female robot, so at that time I could've used a good laugh.
I've watched anime since the mid-80's. In the beginning (VHS days), most dubbing and translation was done by people who were serious enthusiasts. They understood the language, and knew how to translate the story and the feelings of the characters. But then the big companies like Pioneer started hiring "celebrities" to do the voice acting. Celebs don't know squat about the culture, language or artform, so it always sounds like they're just reading a badly translated script.
like Akira for example, the english dubbing for the DVD/BluRay release was horrendus compared to the dubbing they did on the VHS. thankfully i still have it.
I watched this at least 15 years ago, and we still quote the line "language is tough enough to translate but English through a megaphone is impossible" although we remember it as "English to Japanese is tough"
In the original Japanese language version, the mad professor was actually speaking in english with a different voice actor providing the english voice.
Good point Chaloner, the anime of years gone by will always be my favorite....today...they go overboard with the digital effects, not bad...but nothing beats hand drawn anime like ROBOT CARNIVAL!!!
You are damn right about that chaloner! I remember seeing this on sci-fi channel long ago i think, i cant believe i found it lol. Probably the last really good anime films were "Ninja Scroll" and "Princess Monoke"
@TGGeko I respectfully disagree just slightly. Microman was rebranded, GoLion was rebranded, Battle of the Planets, was rebranded. Macross, was rebranded. Super Sentai was BUTCHERED of all the things that made it great and infused with retarded footage featuring American actors and voice overs that took a great epic show and turned it into one giant insult to the intelligence of anyone with an I.Q. of 1 and up.
Megas, well. There's nothing wrong with Megas. That show ruled. :-)
this is what I consider " real anime". this was before it became popularized and the production value went way down. they sure don't make em like they used to.
I remember seeing this as a kid. It's still funny and good. I agree that old school anime rocks. Most of the new anime is all about looking pretty and has no substance.
TOTALLY AGREE! nowadays anime have the same generic style, same stupid hijinks/jokes and rarely do you see anything unique. come on japan, focus less on a quick profit and more on originality
@NYCPulpHero Well, that's not sure to say on Fullmetal Alchemist since the story and themes behind that book and animation are pretty outstanding compared to bland Naruto. Though you're right animation wise, Fullmetal seems to be a little short in animation compares to this.
Anime has been around for so many years and so many things have been tried and done. Of course it's getting more and more difficult to still stand out as something unique.
Anyway, go watch some Bokusatsu Tenchi or Ouran High School Host Club. Then, you can still go back and wallow in your Speed Racer, Attack No.1 and Voltron collections. X)
@NYCPulpHero funny since all this is is 2 robots fighting each other and the entire plot is crazy man attacking
you can find a lot of this kind of anime much more than some genres its just not imported because its bargain bin stuff with no plot and the only ones who would dub the anime would be some really cheap company
I found it strange that they changed the voice actor to play the "evil genius", considering even in the original he spoke English. Though with a much higher pitched, and even a bit nasal voice.
One of the best anime around, I remember seeing this when I was a little kid, I think I was five or six at the time. Now fourteen years later, here I am watching this again!
They don't make anime good like this wonderful work here, anymore.
Believe it or not, Sadamoto, Character Designer of NEON GENESIS EVANGELION did the designs for Tale of the 2 Robots. He was probably inluenced by Otomo though.
Ah, I remember watching Robot Canrival back on the SciFi channel back in the mid 90's. I think I was about eight or nine when I saw it. This and the movie Roujin Z is what got me hooked on anime. Thanks for the upload, brings back memories.
I want to subscribe, but it seems to be rude to do so without posting a comment first, so I humbly request my subscription. If this is okay, please let me know, and I will subscribe.
i have robot carnival on vhs and i watched it the other day. In my version the letters that appear at :39 are in English and they say "a tale of two robots - chapter 3: foreign invasion". Does anybody know if any more chapters were made or if "chapter 3" was just added to the name for stylistic value only?
It's a joke, as they kind of treat the show like an episode of any episodic series without establishing anything much. It also occurred to me that the Japanese group was a lot like the characters from Voltron.
they do not because its all digital the only one who even comes close and actually surpasses it is hayo miyazaki. this is all hand drawn with a fairly high frame rate as typical animes go. new anime is incredibly derivative and stale and is usually poor quality of strictly fan service.
You also have to take into account that this was budgeted as a 15 minute movie short. As opposed to a 13 hour (26 episodes x 30 min each) television series.
More than that, Robot Carnival was meant as an exposition by young aspiring directors. Not simply an adaptation of a source material.
Hayao Miyazaki has his studio behind him, but to declare that there are no other well animated films is bupkiss.
Check out "Mellinium Actress" or "Paprika", both excellent, artistic films.
If there was no fish-fillet, Mackarel Sushi wouldn't taste nearly as good.
Besides, sometimes its nice to just flip on something completely brainless (IE: Tenjho Tenge), smoke a bowl and giggle at the fact that 2 of the 5 main characters are obligated to provide fanservice every 3 minutes, espeically during fight scenes x3
Eh maybe so, I've watched somethings like that and've been entertained. Just keep the homosexual vampires and the mindnumbingly dumb chibi away from me. No furries either.
