This is pretty much what happened to star trek in it's early years. It got cancelled for a bit, then they came out with the first movie which brought popularity back to the show and it got started up again. If they can pull off Serenity 2, it garanties that Firefly will return...

If you just see the story, characters play out your opinion would change, sure George Lucas had the whole sar wars universe in his head atleast 10 or more years before filming he was just LUCKY that he got 6 films and out of it. In 2007, Joss Whedon stated, at a viewing of Serenity in Australia, that there was no way another Firefly series would be made unless it was a spin-off. If I recall correctly, he referred to Firefly as "dead." As for Serenity, he hasn't denied or confirmed plans to make a sequel. I'm sure he wants to, but the 40million budget (not including advertising cash) to make the film fell short in the box office, only getting ROUGHLY 39million world-wide. I think Universal wanted a lot more from it.

Hearing this *never* fails to speed up my pulse, and put a goofy smile on my face -- even as it breaks my heart to know we'll probably never see the rest of the story (except maybe in the comix -- which are fine, but hardly comparable).
