  • if u put good antenna u can reach 30 KM, enjoy reading on google ;)

  • With the wireless routers you have in the video, how far can they be apart and still get a good signal? and will the speed be compromised in any way?

    Thanks

  • nice job

  • Thanks for your help. I had to change the settings of my 1st router, it may not work on automatic channel, it didn't work for me.

So I've selected a random channel. 9 for me, and followed your steps and it WORKED.

    Thanks again man

  • awesome, thanks!

  • Great video! Best I have seen on this subject!

  • If you have Broadcom routers like the ones shown (WRT-54Xx) you have to use WPA2 for the most reliable Client Bridge or Repeater Bridge connection, at least according to the Peacock thread. WEP also works but it is not secure so I would recommend against using it.

  • @Moochdad1956 - If your "friendly free internet Starbucks" has a Wi-Fi router running DD-WRT I will be the first to buy you a lifetime supply of coffee!

  • Well done. Thanks for the effort!

  • Excellent video!!! It really spells its out step by step.

  • what if the first router is at the friendly free internet starbucks?

  • Thanks! This was exactly what I needed. Read the wiki but just needed the walk through

  • how do u reconnect to the router after the first step? :S

when i plug the ethernet cable from the first router into the second one and type in 192.168.1.1 I connect to my first router and if i type in 192.168.2.1 (what I changed my second router to) nothing loads

  • and when I change the ip adress of the client, repeater router, i can't continue on the dd-wrt interface because the ip address has changed. when I type the new adress into the browser bar, it wont connect still.

  • The password on the virtual device isn't working and it says it's unsecured for me

  • ah man, thank you. it worked for me. good thing cuz i didnt back up shit. lol

  • Hey, thanks so much for the video.

My screens for the 2nd half (repeater bridge) were a little different, but I figured it out none-the-less.

Again, thanks so much for taking the time to make this available.

  • can you put the second router on a different subnet???

  • @femur61 no

  • Can you add hotspot service on a repeater?

  • My WRT54GS with dd-wrt kept going back to basic wireless setup and bringing both my SSID's to the same as the 1st router, but other than that, worked great, thanks for the vid!

  • daovertaker, are you good with this type of networking? i am having problem. i have the bridge set up, atleast i think so. if i go status then wireless, i see the mac adress of my first router. but have to internet access. could you please help.

    email me at cwhempire@carolina.rr.com

    thanks in advance

  • thanks for the explications. i living in chile, and here its no more people with this information.. pst. i still cant apply the repeater settings i mean it still doesnt work..

  • Think the instructor could speak any faster? Is this an instructional or a speed reading contest?

  • @drbogo321 That's what the pause button is for.

Excellent video, it would have taken me forever to figure this out on my own. Got my client bridge working in just a few minutes, thanks!

  • went thru the steps and everything checks out all right, but when I join the router 1 it gives me a successfully joined message, but when I hit continue and go to status to check for the router mach adress at the bottom of the page its not there. I cannot figure it out...I did the factory reset and tried the set up several times and it will not save the hosting network any Ideas, I have a wrt54gs2 and the primary router is a linksys E1000.

  • This saved me from going out and buying a wireless ethernet converter for my TV.

    Excellent stuff

  • did not working on TPLink 940N after update DDWRT Firmware V.24, update is success but CB failure.

  • Confirmed working on Linksys WRT54G and Cisco Linksys WRT320N (both as client routers to 4g WiFi hotspots). Some of the menu options are in slightly different places, such as the radio button for enabling/disabling SSID is only available under adding Virtual Interface, but otherwise it is still a useful and relevant tutorial. (Side note: the 320N has enough memory for the Mega version of DD-WRT, so that is a plus as well.) Advice: back up settings after successful implementation!

  • You are the man! Thanks a lot for a great tut! Cheers!

  • does it have to be WEP WPA ? can I use WPA2?

  • Thanks for the video. It helped a lot.

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks. That was great. Worked like a charm setting up my WRT160N as a repeater bridge with my Netgear WNDR3400.

My only comment on the video would be to hit only Save for most pages, then hit Apply Settings when you are ready instead of Applying the Settings and needing to wait for a refresh on each step.

  • Thanks very much for the video... Worked perfectly as described. Any chance I could obtain the better quality version??

  • This guide is terribly outdated guys. IT'S FROM 2008

  • i sucessfully setup the 2nd router as client bridge, but when i try to setup repeater bridge, there was not option for me to add virtual interface "ADD" button? what do i do|?

  • What it is if I don't have the repeater option on my 2 nd router?

  • t-mobile lol

  • Good but it needs updating to DD-WRT v24-sp2 as there are a lot of settings in this video that no longer exist.

  • Great tutorial, I have a question, I'm connecting to internet with a wireless modem right now, and also I'm connected wired to a router dir-300 with firmware dd-wrt. My question is, how can I turn my dir-300 in a AP so my wireless devices like xbox, cellphone can be conected to internet with my router?. Please help

  • Great, video. I am seriously stuck however. I have followed both the written and video instructions to a T. I have reset the router multiple times attempting client bridge. I cannot get it to work. After the last step of going to Status-> Wireless -> Wireless nodes-> Site survey. I select Router 1, join, apply and save after joining and i see nothing but Transmitted errors and no received errors. Also the Access point I selected to join does not appear. Any other suggests?

  • great video!!!

  • No, no... Really! Thank You So Much.

I was going to spend lots of money for a new router, you (My Hero) saved me and the family some serious money. So THANK YOU for the walk-through. Much Appreciated.

  • r u on an old version of dd-wrt? ur setup is false. it does now allow wifi if u disable ssid broadcast from router 1 and disable dhcp. i know becuase itried this step 8 times and didnt work. i didnt disable broadcast and dhcp and it worked 1st time

  • Question what if two different wireless router brand with different GUI ? Will it still works? Example DLINK DIR 615 and BUF WHR-HP-G300NH I hope you can help me this thanks.

  • @Bienvenido029 the GUI of the routers should not matter. as long as your 2nd router is the one with the dd-wrt firmware loaded. i successfully did this setup with my att uverse 2wire router and didnt have to do anything with my 2wire router accept log into it once to get the security settings and ip address.

  • Go to dd-wrt wiki for step by step instructions!!!

  • I had this set up over 2 years ago for my kids X-Box. Now Im trying to add a SlingBox and cant figure out how to access the DD-WRT control panel on the bridged router. Maybe I missed it, but if I remember correctly, you have to wire directly to the bridged router to access the control panel. Anyone?

  • @FranticFinn Yes, i think if you plug into LAN port 1 and go to 192.168.1.2 that should bring it up. Presumably though you should be able to reach that router via wifi if you just put in the correct IP address (192.168.1.2) because it is on the same network driven by DHCP on router 1.

  • @roflman79 if for some reason you cannot remember the ip address you gave your 2nd router then you can reset the router and the ip address will go back to 192.168.1.1 however you will also have to set everything back up again. not that bad maybe 15 min work if nothing goes wrong

  • This is super fantastic. The WIKI does not have all of what you have in your video. You might want to re-do the video and maybe mark it as 14929 (or whatever interface compile you are using) so everyone knows which one is being shown. Also - did you ever take a breath while doing this? Man! Talk about listen for a second - HIT THE PAUSE! - and do what you are saying! Heh! Great video though! It got my ASUS RT-N12 up and running immediately! Thanks again for doing this! :-)

  • Excellent presentation...... wanted to point out the "congradulations" though.....

    nevertheless very very informatve.... thanks.....

  • Thank u thank u thank u, did I say thank u yet:-) I just spend three days trying to configure a repeaters bridge following the dd-wrt wiki shit ass guide, I'm so sad it took me three days to find ur video let say again thank you

  • really good explanation. it works ... for a wired connection.

is it possible to allow a wireless connection for a wireless device on the secondary router (the client bridge?)?

    using v24-sp2 on a DIR-615

  • i cant get it to work,

do you really need to plug into first router and disable firewall?

  • FINALLY AN GREAT EXPLANATION........ AND GUESS WHAT IT WORKS.

  • @wadewms i cant get it to work,

do you really need to plug into first router and disable firewall?

  • After trying to get this to work form other so called video instruction. I finally got it to work with your video. Thank you

  • Why does the SSID have to be different? 4:54 I am trying to learn as much as possible about this and am trying to make it so that i never need to change networks manually, it just always picks the router with the best signal strength. However I am not sure how to do this. (Linksys WRT160N 3.0 is my Secondary Router btw)

  • @TheSlimHim If they are the same then when you try to access your 2nd router using the same gateway address as router 1 then you will only be able to access the 1st router's settings. then reset of 2nd router or power off of 1st router will need to happen in order for you to be able to access the 2nd router's settings

  • Can you recommend stable build for this setup, for WRT54GL? i use v24-sp2 12548 ..is that not old?

    /thanks

  • "Congratulations" not "Congradulations" otherwise, very good video. Very informative.

  • anybody,,,, do both routers need the dd-wrt firmware? or only the second router?

    thanks...

  • @XEGUERRA1 Only the second, though having it on both is useful if you run into issues. I'm currently running with my main router having the standard linksys firmware and dd-wrt only on the second and all is well.

  • @XEGUERRA1 I need to know this aswell, can anyone confirm?

  • @XEGUERRA1 only second router,

  • my d-link 615 dd-wrt router cant see my host router after all this setup :(

  • great! thanks!

  • I'm accessing a distant wifi signal from my dorm using a Cantenna. When I set up the bridge should I connect the Cantenna to the left (looking at the antenna side of the Linksys) or the right? Will the other antenna be the one rebroadcasting inside my dorm room or does anyone know? Thanks.

  • if anyone did this with a wep passphrase, did you click on "generate" or did you leave the keys blank?

  • I recently bridged my wireless connection to my local area connection in order to play xbox live. It works, however, I experience long periods of lag on both my xbox and the computers throughout my house. I discovered that my computer is only allowing 1 mbps of “link speed” to the network bridge. If I increase the “link speed”, will it reduce the lag? If so, how do I do it?

My wireless connection is running at 11 mbps.

  • After I did the bridge I can't access my flashed router

    I tried 192.168.1.1 & 192.168.1.2

    And it doesn't work

  • Hi, tutorial is very clear...

my issues are this, though: when changing Wirelss Mode from Client Bridge to Repeater Bridge there is no option to set Wireless SSID broadcast back to "enable" (in the physical interface).

I got to the end of the procedure, otherwise, but my range does not seem to have extended any...

how can I test that I am connecting through "2nd router", please?

    Thankyou so much.

  • @MrWylis

the answer to your problem is actually resolved @ 2:48 with the annotations

  • My xbox live on the Secondary device is awfully slow. The 4MB Crysis update takes 30 minutes! Anybody can tell me how I can find out the IP address that I need to set the port forwarding to? The one of the secondary device or the IP address of the Xbox?

  • Comment removed

  • I searched everywhere for good instructions and by far these are the best... Thanks

  • Do both routers must be flashed with DD-WRT?

  • Comment removed

  • @lakehill100

no, only the 2. router needs DD-WRT

  • @lakehill100 No ,I just did this with my att uverse router as the first and the second a linksys wrt54g flashed with dd-wrt

  • Great tutorial, worked a-ok with me. Thanks for making this.

  • wow! Thanks so much for the tutorial! I've been banging my head on the wall for two days and you walked me through it!

  • It said successful when I joined my network, but it never connects.

  • Awesome. Got me set up in no time.

    Your pace is great.

    Visuals were fine.

    Perfect tutorial for me.

  • on the dns would i just put the 3 static dns from my 1st router

  • great stuff but we do it better

  • i see u use the same kind of routers can this be done with different brands of routers. lets say a netgear and a linksys router.

  • @Mr1jovy

I just did it with a linksys and a netgear

  • Great video!

I am getting 100kbps max with the wireless connection to my secondary router (repeater bridge) but I get over 1Mbps on a wired connection to the same router.

1/10th the difference is a bit much of a loss. What kind of losses do you get?

  • hi! problems with securiti? i did what you told but when i create wpa then wont connect enymore? what to do? need some securiti!

  • I need to get a static ip address on my laptop. In my host router, I have turned on static ip for my laptop's mac address. If I connect directly to the host router, I get assigned the specific ip address. But when I connect via the repeater bridge wifi, I don't get that same address. Infact, the host router cannot even see that the device is connected. even though it actually is connected to the wifi and to internet. Is there a way to fix this?

  • I had to change the advanced routing from router to gateway. good luck!

  • theres a different method for those using the wrt54g ver6 routers as well as a different ver of the software you'll need the micro software if you have a neutered router (s/n starts with CDFD) goto ddwrt's website for the full walk through

  • I click join on the first router and it does not do anything, it just sits there is the something that I have to do with the first router????? PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • @LimonPhipps

You dont have to do something with your 1st Router, just setting your 2nd router.

  • Cake !!! Thanks

  • Hi there.

This might be a really stupid q, but is it possible to use the modem, og say a firewall as the dhcp-server for all the pc's connecting to this network?? Or, static ip's on pc's connected to router2. So that pc's connecting to 2ndRouter is part of the same ip-range as pc's connecting directly to the modem/firewall?? Really grateful for any response.

  • @wwwDrow your 1st router should have a range of IP addresses, use any of them that are not being used. when connecting a new line to port in back of 2nd router, go to your new device network set up (for exam..xbox,ps3) , manually type info in set up, it should include ip from 1st router range, subnet mask _from 1st router, default gateway_from 1st router and your done. If you don't know how to get this info (1st router range, subnet mask _from 1st router, default gateway_from 1st router)

  • Thanks for putting this out there! I had mine set up 6 months ago and recently changed modems and Internet provider. Could not remember how to set this up for my Xbox and Linksys router. Read the DD-wrt wiki for hours and gave up. Your video helped make it happen in less than 30 minutes! Thanks!

  • Excellent Tutorial, I tried setting it up using DD-Wrt directions and it failed. work first after watching the video. Thanks!

  • Is it absolutely necessary to setup a static IP?

  • thank you for this video. It was very helpful in guiding me through the setup.

  • When setting up the 2nd 'router' should you assign an IP to your computers LAN and go wired to the 2nd router as you set it up?

  • Whenever I click on apply, the router reboots. That is not mentioned in the video, so its missleading.

  • PLEASE HELP ME I HAVE LINKSYS E3000 AND I WANT TO BUY Linksys WRT54G THE TWO ROUTER NEED TO HAVE THE ((( DD-WRT ))) TO BE BRIDGE OR ONLY THE SECOND ROUTER NEED THE ((( DD-WRT ))) .

  • I have the same problem as mattio... I downloaded the correct firmware and everything following DD-WRT's guide but under Wireless Mode I don't have anything that says Repeater mode ! Anyone know how to fix or is there maybe another version of the firmware?

  • i have a linksys WRT160NL with the ddwrt v24 sp2 pack on it and after setting up the client bridge it wont let me go back and change the first router to an repeater bridge doesn't even give me the option... any help guys i get internet wirelessly only on the laptop i set it up on but any other device wont connect so it's not making sense to me..

  • I had to give my (bridge) router the default GW and DNS server.

I figured it'd pick that up as a client. Thanks for sharing this vid!

  • I am having hard time setting up the wireless bridge between an Air Port Extreme (Primary router) and my old Linksys WRT160 NV3 (Secondary). I already have the DD-WRT installed on the linksys, but I am not quite sure what is the information I need from the Apple router. (I am confused) Could you help me out?

  • Doesnt the bird drive you nuts?

  • Good video. Can I get a copy?

  • Got as far as checking the "site survey" at around 3:27 of your vid....at this point after I hit the "site survey button" I lost access to my router....shortly after I lost conection to the internet and I got an error stating there was an issue with the IP adress being shared by more than one machine on the network I disconnected the "2nd router" and I came back on line maybe @ 2:01 when you say to disable DHCP from the "2nd router" something is happening.....any ideas what I did wrong???

  • Thanks so much, im up and running

  • I've downloaded DD-WRT v24-SP2 for my TP-Link WR740N. I'm trying to use the TP-Link as a repeater, but the drop-down box for Wireless mode does not list "Repeater", or anything that resembles it. Do you know why that option is not available?

  • @Mattio150 I'm having the same problem. Can someone update please? Thanks.

  • I seldom sign in to youtube

I signed in just for you mr. daovertaker.

    excellent guide

    Thank you

  • Awesome very easy to follow but I have one issue I had interenet tv before I did this and my xbox wouldn't access my computer now my xbox connects and I no longer have access to the internet for my tv, When I test my internet connection on my tv its says there isn't one. Any suggestions.

    Thanks

  • when I finish the 1st step on basic setup and save the changes, and then try to go to security, my router stopped working and now I can't get into it. It says I dont have acces to the newtork.

My router is a linksys WRT160N, any ideas on how can i get it working again?

    Thanks,

  • I followed step-by-step and I now have a WIFI repeater-bridge. I needed this because I bought an entertainment system that can connect to Netflix over the internet, but I don't have internet connection to the entertainment system (they want $110 for the WIFI adapter). Thanks for posting this video... I read several confusing forum posts on how to do this, but nothing compares to a video demonstration.

  • is it important to have DD-WRT firmware on the main wireless router ? because I have Sagem branded router (MAIN Router) which is not supported by DD-WRT, also it is the only one which is supported by my dsl line and other routers does not work when I replace it. But I have DD-WRT firmware on Netgear (Second Router) which I want to make it as Wireless Repeater so is it enough for this thing to work ???? Please help

    Thanks

  • @0560936038 -- You do not need to have DD-WRT on the first router. I have the same setup that you have and I was successful. I have a Verizon DSL Westell Wireless router (that came from Verizon and has untouched original firmware). I was able to get my Linksys WRT54G running DD-WRT to act as a WIFI repeater-bridge (WPA2). You just have to make sure that the encryption is identical (make sure WPA/WPA2 encryption and password settings are identical.)

  • @cryptzog

alright but I have a new problem now my Repeater router which has DD-WRT firmware on it , i am not able to be access it on 192.168.1.1 though i was able to access before but now no more i tried hard reset (30-30-30) but no success but i am able to access internet through it by cable but not wirelessly

  • Daovertaker.

Thank you for this video. I followed it step by step and my two routers are up and running like described here. Router One is a Netgear WNR355 and Router Two is a Linksys WRT150N.

    THANKS!

  • At 2:05 time of your video you say to connect the first router to the modem and connect the 2nd router to the first router. I having trouble accessing the 2nd router DD WRT GUI when doing this. ANY TIPS on how about I can access the GUI with the 2nd router. Many Thanks

  • @jingplum -- The only thing I can think of is to make sure you plug the ethernet from the first router's ethernet port into the second router's "internet" Port. At this point, I could access the first router (from a computer connected to an ethernet port of the first router). With this configuration, I could access the first router at 192.168.1.1 and the second at 192.168.1.2 .

  • Thanks for tutorial, but I have one annoying issue.

My PC is connected to 2nd Router with ddwrt and Repeater bridge. Web browsing works fantastic, but when playing MMO, i ALWAYS get disconnected from game server every 30 minutes. Every 30 minutes on the dot. Help?

  • @Vincent777 Oh, forgot to add. Once i get disconnected at the 30 minute mark, I regain internet access in 2 seconds(after being disconnected at the 30 mark.)

  • ya holy shit thanks haha

  • THANK YOU SO MUCH IT WORKS IT WORKS FINALLY!!!

  • thank you very much got it working second attempt i used 2xdlink -dir615 from virgin media

  • Very helpful. Thanks!

  • Good sir, you saved my life with this post! It's amazing because you breezed through it, and I watched several videos with a lot more detail, but yours was the most effective and I truly learned from you! Thanks again for this service! God bless!!!

p.s. I feel so smart now, lol.

  • WWAAAAAYYYY TOO FAST YOU LOST ME!!

  • Very professional man. Great work!

  • Comment removed

  • Thank you for everything, yes I would like for you to send me a copy of the video

  • Would it work if the 1st router was not running DD-WRT but the 2nd router was?

  • @atxguitarist Just tried it today with my u-verse router and dd-wrt linksys router. I had no trouble setting it up.

  • My 1st router have 192.168.100.2 it works as an IP.

When I set 2nd router IP 192.168.100.x i can't log on the 2nd router anymore.

When I leave it as 192.168.1.x I can't see my 1st router on site survey.

    any suggestions?

  • @yershuachu I'm having the exact same problem!

  • thanks buddy...finally got my other router to repeat!

  • yes! thank you so much man, you wont believe how much you helped me, i give all my thanks to you!!! now i can use my neighbors wifi!!!

  • Hi. Thank you for this video. The Buffalo G300N doesn't have client bridge mode, so I set up repeater bridge as specified here. I can reach shared drives on computers attached to the remote router, but I can't access the internet. It seems it can't resolve the names into ip addresses. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

  • Great tutorial, worked flawlessly first try. Only thing i notice is when i hit client bridge mode it disables my WAN dhcp and im not able to get a wan ip for my xbox on it. I can stream files on my lan and have a lan ip, its just in the corner of my dd wrt it says "WAN:dsiabled". If i switch out of client bridge mode to just client mode or back to AP mode i can enable a wan dhcp but im not to sure what the difference is between the two.

  • very good video. its work gr8 with video guide settings.

    BUT

I am not able to put MAC filter on repeater bridge.

Cld you guide me how can MAC filter work on DD-WRT???

I connect my DD-WRT wireless with my First router and I am connecting my computer with DD-WRT wireless.

  • Great tutorial. Worked perfectly. Thanks.

  • plz help me i have the same router but my computer always unknown network i have reseted my router is he broken???

  • MrKouman: When you change the IP address of your router you wil have to set up your computer with a static ip address on the same subnet otherwise you wont be able to connect back ot the router.

  • Everytime I change the ip address of my router and make the changes on te basic setup page, then hit save, my router wants to reboot then I can never get back into my router until I hit the master reset button??

Did I get the wrong firmware or do I still have the original firmware??

  • continuing with my post i tried yesterday to clone the MAC of my Wireless adapter into the DD-WRT and set the ip i was getting as a static ip on the WAN and the i put the DD_wrt as in repeater mode......that did not work on the sense i was not able to get the internet signal that way......then i checked your video....and see you were disabling the WAN ip and set the local ip ....so i guess that is what i need to do.

  • daovertaker Great Video , thanks.....i would like to ask you a questions....

i live in a Condo where they have changed the internet to WIFI.....they supposed to get me a repeater but i have not get it.....so i modified my WRT54G with DD-WRT.....i dont have all the information from the Main Router but i can see what iP, default gateway i am getting from there when i use my usb wireless adapter...is this process going to work if i clone my MAC address from my wireless adapter into the dd-wrt .

  • hi i am wondering if I can configure it so 1 router is wpa and the other one is wep. thanks

  • Thank you so much for this! I was ripping my hair out trying to sort this out. The interface has changed very slightly since you've made this but it still showed me how to do everything.

  • thanks but i dont have the installation disk or anything

  • exelent awsome

  • Clever explanation for newbies. I'd like to express my thankfulness to you for this wonderful and helpful clip. I'd tried several times on my Buffalo WHR-HP-G but it didn't ring a bell. I'll make another try ^.^

  • I have been having a problem where my repeater bridge keeps disconnecting. I have unplug, and replug in the router and then it works fine. I don't think I have a static IP setup. Does the static IP have to be setup on the main router, or is this done on the PC? Could you send me a link to a good tutorial if this is the problem? Thanks a lot for this great tutorial!
