Loved it until Ricciarelli says "prostinato" instead of "profanato". Looks like someone forgot their lines LOL ..otherwise great singing & acting. Ricciarelli could sing Verdi's Aida, Puccini's Tosca, Verdi's Desdemona and Leonora ...she could sing Norma and Anna Bolena. Truly a gifted bel canto lirico spinto.
Sorry Guys... Don't know about singing, but this production is really something. Even compared to the other ones.
I read that Ricciarelli's career didn't last long but she really got her role done! And communicates! Nice! Sometimes opera stops being useless and becomes a wonder!
Yes...she took risks...and had some troubles. But she had such star quality on stage. And the voice in it's prime had a liquid beauty that took my breath away. Who today can you say that about? Netrebko? Nyet! Gheorghiu...perhaps. In short, Ricciarelli knew how to communicate, and in today's pursuit of "perfection" that attribute is all to often lost.
The only thing that prevents Ricciarelli from getting a 5/5 is the fact that she screwed the text left and right on the Figlia impura section, even before:
Quale insulto! O ria beffarda!
Foglia impura di Bolena, parli tu di disonore?
Meretrice indegna e oscena,
in te cada in mio rossore.
Profanato e il soglio inglese,
vil bastarda, dal tuo pie.
Pay attention, she does not sing this text, nor any of the variations printed in the Sills recording booklet.
@tenore23 You're completely right! Thanks for the info! But even if she just got lost in the text you can perfectly follow the thread of the story in a much better way than some "fantastic" prima donna but boring and uninteresting as h... Thanks!
The only thing Ricciarelli was ever good at was art songs: she had no top (like Tebaldi), was flat half the time, and hooted and scooped her way through every role I ever heard (and I heard many things in Italy). She started out very promisingly, then crashed and burned very quickly. Her Desdemona in San Francisco was a disaster....
Just looked at the all, and I still think this one is the best.

I like the way Ricciarelli exits at the end, defiantly. Some of the other Marias seemed kind of cowed.
